ਵਡਾ ਵਡਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਗ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
vaddaa vaddaa har bhaag kar paaeaa |
The Great Lord is obtained by great good destiny.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡੀ ਕਿਸਮਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਿਵਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੪॥੫੬॥

O Nanak, the Gurmukh is blessed with the Naam. ||4||4||56||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਦਿਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੪॥੫੬॥

Aasaa, Fourth Mehl:
ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਗੁਣ ਬੋਲੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
gun gaavaa gun bolee baanee |
I sing His Glorious Praises, and through the Word of His Bani, I speak His Glorious Praises.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮੈਂ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥੧॥
guramukh har gun aakh vakhaanee |1|
As Gurmukh, I chant and recite the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਾਰ ਉਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥
ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਇਆ ਅਨੰਦਾ ॥
jap jap naam man bheaa anandaa |
Chanting and meditating on the Naam, my mind becomes blissful.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਨੰਦ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਿੜਾਇਆ ਰਸਿ ਗਾਏ ਗੁਣ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sat sat satigur naam dirraaeaa ras gaae gun paramaanandaa |1| rahaau |
The True Guru has implanted the True Name of the True Lord within me I sing His Glorious Praises, and taste the supreme ecstasy. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਨਾਮੁ ਸਤਿਨਾਮੁ ਸਤਿਨਾਮੁ ਪੱਕਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਬੜੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਣੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਲੋਗਾ ॥
har gun gaavai har jan logaa |
The humble servants of the Lord sing the Lord's Glorious Praises.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਹੀ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਗਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਵਡੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਪਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਰਜੋਗਾ ॥੨॥
vaddai bhaag paae har nirajogaa |2|
By great good fortune, the detached, absolute Lord is obtained. ||2||
ਤੇ ਵੱਡੀ ਕਿਸਮਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਗੁਣ ਵਿਹੂਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਲੁ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
gun vihoon maaeaa mal dhaaree |
Those without virtue are stained by Maya's filth.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਣ ਜਨਮਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
vin gun janam mue ahankaaree |3|
Lacking virtue, the egotistical die, and suffer reincarnation. ||3||
ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਮੱਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਸਰੀਰਿ ਸਰੋਵਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਪਰਗਟਿ ਕੀਏ ॥
sareer sarovar gun paragatt kee |
The ocean of the body yields pearls of virtue.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਵਿਚ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਹੀ) ਪਰਗਟ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਥਿ ਤਤੁ ਕਢੀਏ ॥੪॥੫॥੫੭॥

O Nanak, the Gurmukh churns this ocean, and discovers this essence. ||4||5||57||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਦੁੱਧ ਰਿੜਕ ਕੇ ਮੱਖਣ ਕੱਢੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ (ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ) ਨਿਚੋੜ (ਉੱਚਾ ਸੁੱਚਾ ਜੀਵਨ) ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੫॥੫੭॥

ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਣੀ ਨਾਮੋ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
naam sunee naamo man bhaavai |
I listen to the Naam, the Name of the Lord the Naam is pleasing to my mind.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮੈਂ (ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਵਡੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
vaddai bhaag guramukh har paavai |1|
By great good fortune, the Gurmukh obtains the Lord. ||1||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵੱਡੀ ਕਿਸਮਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ॥

Chant the Naam, as Gurmukh, and be exalted.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰੋ (ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਚੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ) ਚਾਨਣ ਹੋ ਜਾਇਗਾ।
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈ ਧਰ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਵਿਆ ਸਭ ਸਾਸ ਗਿਰਾਸਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naam binaa mai dhar nahee kaaee naam raviaa sabh saas giraasaa |1| rahaau |
Without the Naam, I have no other support the Naam is woven into all my breaths and morsels of food. ||1||Pause||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਤਾਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਆਸਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਮੈਂ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਾਹ ਨਾਲ, ਹਰੇਕ ਗਿਰਾਹੀ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਨਾਮੈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸੁਨੀ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਈ ॥
naamai surat sunee man bhaaee |
The Naam illuminates my mind listening to it, my mind is pleased.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਸ੍ਰੋਤ ਸੁਣੀ ਹੈ (ਤਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਲੱਗ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਜੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਨਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਮੇਰਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਸਖਾਈ ॥੨॥
jo naam sunaavai so meraa meet sakhaaee |2|
One who speaks the Naam - he alone is my friend and companion. ||2||
ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰਾ ਸਾਥੀ ਹੈ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਨਾਮਹੀਣ ਗਏ ਮੂੜ ਨੰਗਾ ॥
naamaheen ge moorr nangaa |
Without the Naam, the fools depart naked.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਹੋਏ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਥੋਂ) ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਹੱਥ ਚਲੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਖੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਤੰਗਾ ॥੩॥
pach pach mue bikh dekh patangaa |3|
They burn away to death, chasing the poison of Maya, like the moth chasing the flame. ||3||
(ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਪਤੰਗ (ਬਲਦੇ ਦੀਵੇ ਨੂੰ) ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਸੜ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਨਾਮ-ਹੀਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੋ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਆਪੇ ਥਾਪੇ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪੇ ॥

He Himself establishes, and, having established, disestablishes.
(ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੀ ਕੀਹ ਵੱਸ?) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ-ਰਚਨਾ ਰਚਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਰਚ ਕੇ ਨਾਸ ਭੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ॥੪॥੬॥੫੮॥
naanak naam devai har aape |4|6|58|
O Nanak, the Lord Himself bestows the Naam. ||4||6||58||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੬॥੫੮॥

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਵੇਲਿ ਵਧਾਈ ॥
guramukh har har vel vadhaaee |
The vine of the Lord's Name, Har, Har, has taken root in the Gurmukh.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਵੇਲ ਹੈ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ-ਵੇਲ ਨੂੰ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਜਲ ਸਿੰਜ ਸਿੰਜ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਵਡੀ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਫਲ ਲਾਗੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਕ ਰਸਾਈ ॥੧॥
fal laage har rasak rasaaee |1|
It bears the fruit of the Lord its taste is so tasty! ||1||
(ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ ਵੇਲ ਨੂੰ) ਰਸ ਦੇਣ ਵੇਲੇ ਸੁਆਦਲੇ (ਆਤਮਕ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ) ਫਲ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਅਨਤ ਤਰੰਗਾ ॥
har har naam jap anat tarangaa |
Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, in endless waves of joy.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੀਆ-ਜੰਤ-ਰੂਪ) ਬੇਅੰਤ ਲਹਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ।
ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਕਾਲੁ ਜਮਕੰਕਰ ਭੁਇਅੰਗਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jap jap naam guramat saalaahee maariaa kaal jamakankar bhueiangaa |1| rahaau |
Chant and repeat the Naam through the Guru's Teachings praise the Lord, and slay the horrible serpent of the Messenger of Death. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ ਤੇ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹੁ। (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕੀਤੀ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮਨ-) ਸੱਪ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਲਿਆ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕਾ ਲਿਆ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਜਮਦੂਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਲਿਆ। ਜਮਦੂਤ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਮਹਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਰਖਾਈ ॥
har har gur meh bhagat rakhaaee |
The Lord has implanted His devotional worship in the Guru.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ (ਆਪਣੀ) ਭਗਤੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਰੱਖੀ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰੁ ਤੁਠਾ ਸਿਖ ਦੇਵੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥੨॥
gur tutthaa sikh devai mere bhaaee |2|
When the Guru is pleased, He bestows it upon His Sikh, O my siblings of Destiny. ||2||
ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ (ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਦਾਤਿ) ਸਿੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਿਛੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
haumai karam kichh bidh nahee jaanai |
One who acts in ego, knows nothing about the Way.
(ਪਰ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ) ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੇ ਵਲੋਂ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਕੰਮ (ਭੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ) ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਰਤਾ ਭੀ ਸਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ।
ਜਿਉ ਕੁੰਚਰੁ ਨਾਇ ਖਾਕੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਾਣੈ ॥੩॥
jiau kunchar naae khaak sir chhaanai |3|
He acts like an elephant, who takes a bath, and then throws dust on his head. ||3||
(ਹਉਮੈ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕੰਮ ਇਉਂ ਹਨ) ਜਿਵੇਂ ਹਾਥੀ ਨ੍ਹਾ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਜੇ ਵਡ ਭਾਗ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਵਡ ਊਚੇ ॥
je vadd bhaag hoveh vadd aooche |
If one's destiny is great and exalted,
ਜੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗ ਹੋਣ, ਜੇ ਬੜੇ ਉਚੇ ਭਾਗ ਹੋਣ ਤਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹਿ ਸਚਿ ਸੂਚੇ ॥੪॥੭॥੫੯॥
naanak naam japeh sach sooche |4|7|59|
O Nanak, one chants the Naam, the Name of the Immaculate, True Lord. ||4||7||59||
(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥੭॥੫੯॥

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਮਨਿ ਭੂਖ ਲਗਾਈ ॥
har har naam kee man bhookh lagaaee |
My mind suffers hunger for the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਵੀਰ! (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਨਿਐ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥੧॥
naam suniai man tripatai mere bhaaee |1|
Hearing the Naam, my mind is satisfied, O my Siblings of Destiny. ||1||
(ਇਸ ਭੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦੀ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਜੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਰਹੀਏ ਤਾਂ ਮਨ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ) ਰੱਜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਮੀਤਾ ॥

Chant the Naam, O my friends, O GurSikhs.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖੋ! ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਿੱਤਰੋ! (ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ ਰਹੋ, ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ ਰਹੋ।
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਨਾਮੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਖਹੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਨਿ ਚੀਤਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Chant the Naam, and through the Naam, obtain peace through the Guru's Teachings, enshrine the Naam in your heart and mind. ||1||Pause||
ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣੋ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ, ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿਤ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਨਾਮੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਣੀ ਮਨੁ ਸਰਸਾ ॥
naamo naam sunee man sarasaa |
Hearing the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the mind is in bliss.
(ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਵੀਰ!) ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਮਨ (ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦਇਆ ਆਦਿਕ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਹਰਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮੁ ਲਾਹਾ ਲੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਬਿਗਸਾ ॥੨॥
naam laahaa lai guramat bigasaa |2|
Reaping the profit of the Naam, through the Guru's Teachings, my soul has blossomed forth. ||2||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਖੱਟ ਖੱਟ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਖੁਸ਼ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੁਸਟੀ ਮੋਹ ਅੰਧਾ ॥
naam binaa kusattee moh andhaa |
Without the Naam, the mortal is a leper, blinded by emotional attachment.
(ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਕੋਹੜਾ, ਕੋਹੜ ਦੇ ਦਰਦਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਲਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਿੱਛੁੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਰੋਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਗ੍ਰਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਜੁਗਤ ਵਲੋਂ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਕਰੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਭ ਨਿਹਫਲ ਕਰਮ ਕੀਏ ਦੁਖੁ ਧੰਧਾ ॥੩॥
sabh nihafal karam kee dukh dhandhaa |3|
All his actions are fruitless they lead only to painful entanglements. ||3||
ਹੋਰ ਜਿਤਨੇ ਭੀ ਕੰਮ ਉਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਭ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਕੰਮ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਸ ਲਈ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਜਾਲ ਹੀ ਬਣੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਜਪੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥
har har har jas japai vaddabhaagee |
The very fortunate ones chant the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har, Har.
ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੇਹੜਾ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਲੈ ਕੇ) ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥੪॥੮॥੬੦॥

O Nanak, through the Guru's Teachings, one embraces love for the Naam. ||4||8||60||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲਗਨ ਬਣੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੮॥੬੦॥
