Learn Shabad Kirtan step by step
ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ ਰਤਨਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਦਾ ਮੁਫ਼ਤ ਉਪਰਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
NaamSimar is a free kirtan learning project by Rattanjit Singh.
NaamSimar is a free, bilingual learning website for children and families beginning Shabad Kirtan on the harmonium. Its guided course moves from listening, posture, instrument care, and the seven swars toward raag awareness, taal, accompaniment, and group practice.
The course sequence follows the four-stage structure in Harmonium & Gurbani Kirtan — From Beginner to Pro, THT Publications (2026). Activities on this site have been rewritten in child-friendly language. They are learning prompts, not a substitute for an experienced Kirtan teacher.
Raag practice and performance traditions can vary. Learn each Shabad’s prescribed raag, pronunciation, and maryada from a knowledgeable teacher. The site keeps Gurbani text and its pronunciation separate from invented practice melodies.
How we check Gurbani
Out of respect, Gurbani on this site is never typed by hand. Every line comes from the Shabad OS database and is compared word for word, by program, with the Gurbani Paath Senthia Pothis (Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Academy) and BaniDB. Where printed sources differ, the SGPC print is followed. The Nitnem banis follow the Damdami Taksal Sundar Gutka. A page is not published if any line fails the check.
The lessons quote Gurbani from the book Harmonium & Gurbani Kirtan; each quoted line is matched to the same checked text of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji before the lesson is built. If you ever see a mistake, please tell us.
What is checked and what is not
- Checked by program: Gurbani text, Ang numbers, Shabad headings, and that each practice tune sings the Shabad’s own words.
- Your teacher should confirm: raag forms and reets, pronunciation (santhya) and maryada. Practice tunes are for learning, not traditional reets.
