ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਉਪਾਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
naam na cheteh upaavanahaaraa |
They do not remember the Name of the Creator Lord.
ਉਹ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਦੇ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ।
ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
mar jameh fir vaaro vaaraa |2|
They die, and are reborn, over and over, again and again. ||2||
ਉਹ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਜੰਮਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੰਮਦੇ ਹਨ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਅੰਧੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
andhe guroo te bharam na jaaee |
Those whose guru is spiritually blind - their doubts are not dispelled.
(ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਆਪ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਏ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ (ਸਰਨ ਆਏ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ) ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਮੂਲੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਲਾਗੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਈ ॥
mool chhodd laage doojai bhaaee |
Abandoning the Source of all, they have become attached to the love of duality.
(ਅਜੇਹੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਤਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਗੋਂ) ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮੂਲ-ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੩॥
bikh kaa maataa bikh maeh samaaee |3|
Infected with poison, they are immersed in poison. ||3||
(ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਮਾਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਮੂਲੁ ਜੰਤ੍ਰ ਭਰਮਾਏ ॥
maaeaa kar mool jantr bharamaae |
Believing Maya to be the source of all, they wander in doubt.
(ਅਭਾਗੀ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੂੰ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ) ਆਸਰਾ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਹੀ) ਭਟਕਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਵਿਸਰਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਏ ॥
har jeeo visariaa doojai bhaae |
They have forgotten the Dear Lord, and they are in love with duality.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਭੁਲਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਸੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥
jis nadar kare so param gat paae |4|
The supreme status is obtained only by those who are blessed with His Glance of Grace. ||4||
(ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਰਹਿਮ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿੱਥੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ) ॥੪॥
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਰਤਾਏ ॥
antar saach baahar saach varataae |
One who has Truth pervading within, radiates Truth outwardly as well.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਪਰਕਾਸ਼ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਗਤ ਨਾਲ ਵਰਤਣ-ਵਰਤਾਵ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਭੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਖਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚੁ ਨ ਛਪੈ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਰਖੈ ਛਪਾਏ ॥
saach na chhapai je ko rakhai chhapaae |
The Truth does not remain hidden, even though one may try to hide it.
(ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਬਾਹਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਪਰਕਾਸ਼ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ), ਉਹ ਜੇ ਇਸ (ਮਿਲੀ ਦਾਤਿ) ਨੂੰ ਲੁਕਾ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਣ ਦਾ ਜਤਨ ਭੀ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਸਦ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦਾ ਪਰਕਾਸ਼) ਲੁਕਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥੫॥

The spiritually wise know this intuitively. ||5||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ (ਟਿਕ ਕੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ (ਇਸ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਨੂੰ) ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੫॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
guramukh saach rahiaa liv laae |
The Gurmukhs keep their consciousness lovingly centered on the Lord.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
haumai maaeaa sabad jalaae |
Ego and Maya are burned away by the Word of the Shabad.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦਾ ਮੋਹ) ਸਾੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੬॥
meraa prabh saachaa mel milaae |6|
My True God unites them in His Union. ||6||
(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
satigur daataa sabad sunaae |
The True Guru, The Giver, preaches the Shabad.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ) ਦਾਤ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥
dhaavat raakhai tthaak rahaae |
He controls, and restrains, and holds still the wandering mind.
ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਲੋਂ) ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਰੋਕ ਕੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਏ ॥੭॥
poore gur te sojhee paae |7|
Understanding is obtained through the Perfect Guru. ||7||
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਜੁਗਤਿ ਦੀ ਸਹੀ) ਸਮਝ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਿਰਜਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਗੋਈ ॥
aape karataa srisatt siraj jin goee |
The Creator Himself has created the universe He Himself shall destroy it.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਇਹ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਵਾਰੀ) ਨਾਸ ਕੀਤੀ।
ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
tis bin doojaa avar na koee |
Without Him, there is no other at all.
ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ (ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੮॥੬॥
naanak guramukh boojhai koee |8|6|
O Nanak, how rare are those who, as Gurmukh, understand this! ||8||6||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੋਈ (ਵਿਰਲਾ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਹ ਭੇਦ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੬॥

ਨਾਮੁ ਅਮੋਲਕੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

The Gurmukhs obtain the Naam, the Priceless Name of the Lord.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਮੁੱਲ ਤੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਨਾਮੋ ਸੇਵੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
naamo seve naam sehaj samaavai |
They serve the Name, and through the Name, they are absorbed in intuitive peace and poise.
ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਿਤ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
amrit naam rasanaa nit gaavai |
With their tongues, they continually sing the Ambrosial Naam.
ਉਹ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
jis no kripaa kare so har ras paavai |1|
They obtain the Lord's Name the Lord showers His Mercy upon them. ||1||
ਪਰ ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਜਪਉ ਜਗਦੀਸਾ ॥
anadin hiradai jpau jagadeesaa |
Night and day, within your heart, meditate on the Lord of the Universe.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮੈਂ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵਉ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਸੂਖਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

The Gurmukhs obtain the supreme state of peace. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਦਰਜਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸੂਖੁ ਭਇਆ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥
hiradai sookh bheaa paragaas |
Peace comes to fill the hearts of those
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਚਾਨਣ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥
guramukh gaaveh sach gunataas |
who, as Gurmukh, sing of the True Lord, the treasure of excellence.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸ ਨਿਤ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਦਾਸੁ ॥
daasan daas nit hoveh daas |
They become the constant slaves of the slaves of the Lord's slaves.
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਬਣੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਮਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਉਦਾਸੁ ॥੨॥
grih kuttanb meh sadaa udaas |2|
Within their households and families, they remain always detached. ||2||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਭੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਲੋਂ) ਉਪਰਾਮ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋ ਹੋਈ ॥
jeevan mukat guramukh ko hoee |
How rare are those who, as Gurmukh, become Jivan Mukta - liberated while yet alive.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦਾ ਕਾਰ-ਵਿਹਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਭੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪਰਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥
param padaarath paavai soee |
They alone obtain the supreme treasure.
ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਨਾਮ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਟੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
trai gun mette niramal hoee |
Eradicating the three qualities, they become pure.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਮਿਟਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ-ਆਤਮਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਹਜੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਈ ॥੩॥
sahaje saach milai prabh soee |3|
They are intuitively absorbed in the True Lord God. ||3||
ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਮੋਹ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
moh kuttanb siau preet na hoe |
Emotional attachment to family does not exist,
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਨਾਲ (ਉਹ) ਮੋਹ-ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ (ਜੋ ਤ੍ਰੈਗੁਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ),
ਜਾ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਵਸਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
jaa hiradai vasiaa sach soe |
when the True Lord abides within the heart.
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਬੇਧਿਆ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
guramukh man bedhiaa asathir hoe |
The mind of the Gurmukh is pierced through and held steady.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ) ਵਿੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਅਡੋਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥
hukam pachhaanai boojhai sach soe |4|
One who recognizes the Hukam of the Lord's Command understands the True Lord. ||4||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਤੂੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
toon karataa mai avar na koe |
You are the Creator Lord - there is no other for me.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਵਿੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਇਉਂ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ-ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਆਸਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ,
ਤੁਝੁ ਸੇਵੀ ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
tujh sevee tujh te pat hoe |
I serve You, and through You, I obtain honor.
ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਗਾਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
kirapaa kareh gaavaa prabh soe |
God showers His Mercy, and I sing His Praises.
ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰੇਂ, ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਸਭ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਲੋਇ ॥੫॥
naam ratan sabh jag meh loe |5|
The light of the jewel of the Naam permeates the entire world. ||5||
ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਲਈ) ਚਾਨਣ (ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ) ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਮੀਠੀ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
guramukh baanee meetthee laagee |
To the Gurmukhs, the Word of God's Bani seems so sweet.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਤਰੁ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
antar bigasai anadin liv laagee |
Deep within, their hearts blossom forth night and day, they lovingly center themselves on the Lord.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਖਿੜ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਜੁੜੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਹਜੇ ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ॥
sahaje sach miliaa parasaadee |
The True Lord is intuitively obtained, by His Grace.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਪੂਰੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੬॥
satigur paaeaa poorai vaddabhaagee |6|
The True Guru is obtained by the destiny of perfect good fortune. ||6||
(ਪਰ ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਗੁਰੂ ਪੂਰੇ ਭਾਗ ਨਾਲ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੁਖ ਨਾਸੁ ॥
haumai mamataa duramat dukh naas |
Egotism, possessiveness, evil-mindedness and suffering depart,
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ, ਅਪਣੱਤ ਦਾ, ਖੋਟੀ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਦਾ, ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਬ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥
jab hiradai raam naam gunataas |
when the Lord's Name, the Ocean of Virtue, comes to dwell within the heart.
ਜਦੋਂ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਸੁ ॥
guramukh budh pragattee prabh jaas |
The intellect of the Gurmukhs is awakened, and they praise God,
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਸੁਣਨ ਨਾਲ ਉਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਉੱਜਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਜਬ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਵਿਆ ਚਰਣ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੭॥
jab hiradai raviaa charan nivaas |7|
when the Lord's Lotus Feet come to dwell within the heart. ||7||
ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਇ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
jis naam dee soee jan paae |
They alone receive the Naam, unto whom it is given.
ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
guramukh mele aap gavaae |
The Gurmukhs shed their ego, and merge with the Lord.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
hiradai saachaa naam vasaae |
The True Name abides within their hearts.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੮॥੭॥
naanak sahaje saach samaae |8|7|
O Nanak, they are intuitively absorbed in the True Lord. ||8||7||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੭॥

ਮਨ ਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ਭੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
man hee man savaariaa bhai sehaj subhaae |
The mind has intuitively healed itself, through the Fear of God.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਹੀ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, (ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਕਿਤੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਜਾਣ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਈ)
