ਤਤੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਹਿ ਬੰਨਹਿ ਪੰਡ ਪਰਾਲਾ ॥੨॥
tat na cheeneh baneh pandd paraalaa |2|
They do not understand the essence of reality, and they gather their worthless bundles of straw. ||2||
ਉਹ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਮਨੋਰਥ) ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਛਾਣਦੇ, ਉਹ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਚਰਚਾ ਦੀਆਂ) ਪਰਾਲੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਪੰਡਾਂ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ) ਬੰਨ੍ਹੀ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅਗਿਆਨਿ ਕੁਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
manamukh agiaan kumaarag paae |
The self-willed manmukhs, in ignorance, take the path of evil.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਲੋਕ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਗ਼ਲਤ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥
har naam bisaariaa bahu karam drirraae |
They forget the Lord's Name, and in its place, they establish all sorts of rituals.
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਤਾਂ ਭੁਲਾ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ (ਹੋਰ ਵਰਤ-ਨੇਮ ਆਦਿਕ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਪਕਿਆਈ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਭਵਜਲਿ ਡੂਬੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਏ ॥੩॥
bhavajal ddoobe doojai bhaae |3|
They drown in the terrifying world-ocean, in the love of duality. ||3||
ਅਜੇਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ॥੩॥
ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮੁਹਤਾਜੁ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
maaeaa kaa muhataaj panddit kahaavai |
Driven crazy, infatuated by Maya, they call themselves Pandits - religious scholars
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾਲੂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਭੀ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਪੰਡਿਤ ਅਖਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਰਾਤਾ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
bikhiaa raataa bahut dukh paavai |
stained with corruption, they suffer terrible pain.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ (ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ) ਉਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਿੰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਮ ਕਾ ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵੜਾ ਨਿਤ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
jam kaa gal jevarraa nit kaal santaavai |4|
The noose of the Messenger of Death is around their necks they are constantly tormented by death. ||4||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਫਾਹਾ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੀ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
guramukh jamakaal nerr na aavai |
The Messenger of Death does not even approach the Gurmukhs.
(ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁੱਕਦੀ।
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਵੈ ॥
haumai doojaa sabad jalaavai |
Through the Word of the Shabad, they burn away their ego and duality.
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਸਾੜ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
naame raate har gun gaavai |5|
Attuned to the Name, they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5||
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾਸੀ ਭਗਤਾ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
maaeaa daasee bhagataa kee kaar kamaavai |
Maya is the slave of the Lord's devotees it works for them.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮਾਇਆ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਾਸੀ ਬਣੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਲੋੜਾਂ ਪੂਰੀਆਂ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
charanee laagai taa mehal paavai |
One who falls at their feet attains the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਦ ਹੀ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
sad hee niramal sehaj samaavai |6|
He is forever immaculate he is absorbed in intuitive peace. ||6||
ਉਹ ਭੀ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਮਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਹਿ ਸੇ ਧਨਵੰਤ ਦਿਸਹਿ ਜੁਗ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
har kathaa suneh se dhanavant diseh jug maahee |
Those who listen to the Lord's Sermon are seen to be the wealthy people in this world.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਪ੍ਰਤੱਖ) ਧਨਾਢ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ (ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ)।
ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਸਭਿ ਨਿਵਹਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਪੂਜ ਕਰਾਹੀ ॥
tin kau sabh niveh anadin pooj karaahee |
Everyone bows down to them, and adores them, night and day.
ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਨਿਊਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਦਰ-ਸਤਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਸਹਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਰਵਹਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੭॥
sahaje gun raveh saache man maahee |7|
They intuitively savor the Glories of the True Lord within their minds. ||7||
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਚੇਤੇ ਕਰੀ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੭॥
ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥
poorai satigur sabad sunaaeaa |
The Perfect True Guru has revealed the Shabad
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸੁਣਾਈ ਹੈ,
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਟੇ ਚਉਥੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
trai gun mette chauthai chit laaeaa |
it eradicates the three qualities, and attunes the consciousness to the fourth state.
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਮਿਟਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਉਸ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣ ਆਪਣਾ ਅਸਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੇ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੮॥੪॥
naanak haumai maar braham milaaeaa |8|4|
O Nanak, subduing egotism, one is absorbed into God. ||8||4||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੪॥

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਵੇਦੁ ਪੜੈ ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥
brahamaa ved parrai vaad vakhaanai |
Brahma studied the Vedas, but these lead only to debates and disputes.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪੰਡਿਤ ਉਸ) ਵੇਦ ਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜੇਹੜਾ ਉਹ) ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ (ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ) ਬਹਸ (ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ) ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਾਮਸੁ ਆਪੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
antar taamas aap na pachhaanai |
He is filled with darkness he does not understand himself.
ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਪੜਤਾਲਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਏ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥੧॥
taa prabh paae gurasabad vakhaanai |1|
And yet, if he chants the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he finds God. ||1||
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਹੈ) ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਉ ਫਿਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥
gur sevaa krau fir kaal na khaae |
So serve the Guru, and you shall not be consumed by death.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮੈਂ (ਤਾਂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ (ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆ ਹਾਂ। ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਅਸਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਮੁੜ ਕਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦੀ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਤਬਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੀ)।
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਖਾਧੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

The self-willed manmukhs have been consumed by the love of duality. ||1||Pause||
(ਪਰ) ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸਣ ਕਰਕੇ) ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਸੀਧੇ ॥
guramukh praanee aparaadhee seedhe |
Becoming Gurmukh, the sinful mortals are purified.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਾਪੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਭੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸਫਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਰੀਧੇ ॥
gur kai sabad antar sehaj reedhe |
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they find intuitive peace and poise deep within.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੀਧੇ ॥੨॥
meraa prabh paaeaa gur kai sabad seedhe |2|
I have found my God, through the Guru's Shabad, and I have been reformed. ||2||
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦੀ ਰੀਝ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਸਫਲ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
satigur mele prabh aap milaae |
God Himself unites us in Union with the True Guru,
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ) ਜੋੜਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਏ ॥
mere prabh saache kai man bhaae |
when we become pleasing to the Mind of my True God.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥੩॥
har gun gaaveh sehaj subhaae |3|
They sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, in the poise of celestial peace. ||3||
ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਚੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ॥
bin gur saache bharam bhulaae |
Without the True Guru, they are deluded by doubt.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੇ ਸਦਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਏ ॥
manamukh andhe sadaa bikh khaae |
The blind, self-willed manmukhs constantly eat poison.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਏ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ (ਇਹ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਹੀ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਜਮ ਡੰਡੁ ਸਹਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥
jam ddandd saheh sadaa dukh paae |4|
They are beaten by the Messenger of Death with his rod, and they suffer in constant pain. ||4||
ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦੀ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਸਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥
ਜਮੂਆ ਨ ਜੋਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
jamooaa na johai har kee saranaaee |
The Messenger of Death does not catch sight of those who enter the Sanctuary of the Lord.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ਜਮ ਉਸ ਵਲ ਤੱਕ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁੱਕਦੀ)।
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥
haumai maar sach liv laaee |
Subduing egotism, they lovingly center their consciousness on the True Lord.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ) ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੫॥
sadaa rahai har naam liv laaee |5|
They keep their consciousness constantly focused on the Lord's Name. ||5||
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਪਵਿਤਾ ॥
satigur seveh se jan niramal pavitaa |
Those humble beings who serve the True Guru are pure and immaculate.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਤੇ ਸੁੱਚੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮਨ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਜੀਤਾ ॥
man siau man milaae sabh jag jeetaa |
Merging their minds into the Mind, they conquer the entire world.
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ) ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਤ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਕੋਈ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ)।
ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੁਸਲੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੀਤਾ ॥੬॥
ein bidh kusal terai mere meetaa |6|
In this way, you too shall find happiness, O my friend. ||6||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! (ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਏਂ, ਤਾਂ) ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਭੀ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹੇਗਾ ॥੬॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
satiguroo seve so fal paae |
Those who serve the True Guru are blessed with fruitful rewards.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਇਹ) ਫਲ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
hiradai naam vichahu aap gavaae |
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides in their hearts selfishness and conceit depart from within them.
(ਕਿ) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ (ਹਉਮੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ) ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਨਹਦ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਏ ॥੭॥
anahad baanee sabad vajaae |7|
The unstruck melody of the Shabad vibrates for them. ||7||
(ਜਿਵੇਂ ਢੋਲ ਵੱਜਿਆਂ ਕੋਈ ਨਿੱਕਾ-ਮੋਟਾ ਹੋਰ ਖੜਾਕ ਸੁਣਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ) ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਉਜਾਗਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਮੰਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਅਸਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੀ ॥੭॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਕਵਨੁ ਕਵਨੁ ਨ ਸੀਧੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
satigur te kavan kavan na seedho mere bhaaee |
Who - who has not been purified by the True Guru, O my Siblings of Destiny?
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਕੇਹੜਾ ਕੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ) ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ? (ਜੇਹੜਾ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਪੱਲਾ ਫੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਸਫਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ)।
ਭਗਤੀ ਸੀਧੇ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਈ ॥
bhagatee seedhe dar sobhaa paaee |
The devotees are purified, and honored in His Court.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੮॥੫॥

O Nanak, greatness is in the Lord's Name. ||8||5||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਭਾ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਵਡਿਆਈ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੫॥

Gauree, Third Mehl:
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
trai gun vakhaanai bharam na jaae |
Those who speak of the three qualities - their doubts do not depart.
(ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਸਾਰੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਦਿਲ-ਚਸਪੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਬੰਧਨ ਨ ਤੂਟਹਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
bandhan na tootteh mukat na paae |
Their bonds are not broken, and they do not obtain liberation.
ਉਸ ਦੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ) ਬੰਧਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਟੁੱਟਦੇ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜੁਗ ਮਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
mukat daataa satigur jug maeh |1|
The True Guru is the Bestower of liberation in this age. ||1||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ (ਸਿਰਫ਼) ਗੁਰੂ (ਹੀ) ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਭਰਮੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
guramukh praanee bharam gavaae |
Those mortals who become Gurmukh give up their doubts.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਹਜ ਧੁਨਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sehaj dhun upajai har liv laae |1| rahaau |
The celestial music wells up, when they lovingly attune their consciousness to the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦੀ ਰੌ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਕਾਲੈ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਰਾ ॥
trai gun kaalai kee sir kaaraa |
Those who are controlled by the three qualities have death hovering over their heads.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਦਿਲ-ਚਸਪੀ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ (ਸਦਾ) ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਚੱਲਦਾ ਹੈ,
