ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਤਹ ਗੋਸਟਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

In the Society of the Saints, spiritual conversations take place.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਉਥੇ (ਉਸ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਵਿਚ ਚੁੱਭੀ ਲਾਂਦਿਆਂ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਸੰਤ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕੋਟਿ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਖੋਇ ॥੨॥
kott janam ke kilavikh khoe |2|
The sinful mistakes of millions of incarnations are erased. ||2||
(ਤੇ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ) ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਦੇ (ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ) ਪਾਪ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਸਿਮਰਹਿ ਸਾਧ ਕਰਹਿ ਆਨੰਦੁ ॥

The Holy Saints meditate in remembrance, in ecstasy.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜੇ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਬੰਦੇ (ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ) ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਰਵਿਆ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦੁ ॥੩॥
man tan raviaa paramaanand |3|
Their minds and bodies are immersed in supreme ecstasy. ||3||
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਆਨੰਦ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਜਿਸਹਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥

Slave Nanak is a sacrifice to those
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ॥੪॥੯੫॥੧੬੪॥

Who have obtained the treasure of the Lord's Feet. ||4||95||164||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਭਗਤ-ਸੇਵਕ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥੯੫॥੧੬੪॥

Gauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਸੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
so kichh kar jit mail na laagai |
Do only that, by which no filth or pollution shall stick to you.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਉਹ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਉੱਦਮ ਕਰ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਤੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨ ਲੱਗ ਸਕੇ,
ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਏਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਜਾਗੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har keeratan meh ehu man jaagai |1| rahaau |
Let your mind remain awake and aware, singing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises. ||1||Pause||
ਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੱਲਿਆਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਸੁਚੇਤ ਰਹੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਏਕੋ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ॥
eko simar na doojaa bhaau |
Meditate in remembrance on the One Lord do not be in love with duality.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ, ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਨਾਹ ਲਿਆ।
ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਜਪਿ ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥

ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰ ॥੧॥
ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਨੇਮ ਬ੍ਰਤ ਪੂਜਾ ॥
karam dharam nem brat poojaa |
The karma of good actions, the Dharma of righteous living, religious rituals, fasts and worship
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਿਥੇ ਹੋਏ) ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕਰਮ, ਵਰਤ ਪੂਜਾ ਆਦਿਕ (ਬਣਾਏ ਹੋਏ) ਨੇਮ-
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਾਨੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੨॥
paarabraham bin jaan na doojaa |2|
- practice these, but do not know any other than the Supreme Lord God. ||2||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਅਜੇਹੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਕੰਮ ਨੂੰ (ਉੱਚੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਸਹਾਇਕ) ਨਾਹ ਸਮਝ ॥੨॥
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਈ ਘਾਲ ॥

Their works are brought to fruition,
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਿਰਫ਼) ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਸਫਲ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੩॥
jaa kee preet apune prabh naal |3|
if they place their love in God. ||3||
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਬਣੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਸੋ ਬੈਸਨੋ ਹੈ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥
so baisano hai apar apaar |
Infinitely invaluable is that Vaishnaav, that worshipper of Vishnu,
(ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਨੇਮ ਬ੍ਰਤ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਸਲ ਬੈਸਨੋ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਬੈਸਨੋ ਪਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਤੇ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ,
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨਿ ਤਜੇ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥੪॥੯੬॥੧੬੫॥

says Nanak, who has renounced corruption. ||4||96||165||
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਜਿਸ ਨੇ (ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲਏ ਹਨ ॥੪॥੯੬॥੧੬੫॥

ਜੀਵਤ ਛਾਡਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਦੇਵਾਨੇ ॥
jeevat chhaadd jaeh devaane |
They desert you even when you are alive, O madman
ਹੇ ਝੱਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਾਇਕ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਜੀਊਂਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਮੁਇਆ ਉਨ ਤੇ ਕੋ ਵਰਸਾਂਨੇ ॥੧॥
mueaa un te ko varasaane |1|
what good can they do when someone is dead? ||1||
ਮੌਤ ਆਉਣ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਕੌਣ ਕੋਈ ਲਾਭ ਉਠਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ॥੧॥
ਸਿਮਰਿ ਗੋਵਿੰਦੁ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ॥
simar govind man tan dhur likhiaa |
Meditate in remembrance on the Lord of the Universe in your mind and body - this is your pre-ordained destiny.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ, (ਇਹ ਸਿਮਰਨ-ਲੇਖ ਹੀ ਧੁਰੋਂ ਰੱਬੀ ਨਿਯਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਤੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਸਦਾ ਲਈ) ਉੱਕਰਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕਾਹੂ ਕਾਜ ਨ ਆਵਤ ਬਿਖਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kaahoo kaaj na aavat bikhiaa |1| rahaau |
The poison of Maya is of no use at all. ||1||Pause||
ਪਰ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ (ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਆਖ਼ਿਰ) ਕਿਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਬਿਖੈ ਠਗਉਰੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਖਾਈ ॥
bikhai tthgauree jin jin khaaee |
Those who have eaten this poison of deception
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਚੇਤੇ ਰੱਖ) ਜਿਸ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਠਗ-ਬੂਟੀ ਖਾ ਲਈ ਹੈ,
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੨॥
taa kee trisanaa kabahoon na jaaee |2|
- their thirst shall never depart. ||2||
(ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਉਸ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਮਿਟਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੨॥
ਦਾਰਨ ਦੁਖ ਦੁਤਰ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
daaran dukh dutar sansaar |
The treacherous world-ocean is filled with terrible pain.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ (-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ) ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਣਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਔਖਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਬੜੇ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਹੈ।
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੈਸੇ ਉਤਰਸਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੩॥
raam naam bin kaise utaras paar |3|
Without the Lord's Name, how can anyone cross over? ||3||
ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਸਕੇਂਗਾ? ॥੩॥
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਦੁਇ ਕੁਲ ਸਾਧਿ ॥
saadhasang mil due kul saadh |
Joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, you shall be saved here and hereafter.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਲੋਕ ਤੇ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਸੰਵਾਰ ਲੈ।
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਰਾਧਿ ॥੪॥੯੭॥੧੬੬॥

O Nanak, worship and adore the Name of the Lord. ||4||97||166||

ਗਰੀਬਾ ਉਪਰਿ ਜਿ ਖਿੰਜੈ ਦਾੜੀ ॥
gareebaa upar ji khinjai daarree |
The bearded emperor who struck down the poor,
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਵੇਖ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਿਆਂ!) ਜੇਹੜੀ ਦਾੜ੍ਹੀ ਗਰੀਬਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਖਿੱਝਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਸਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਸਾੜੀ ॥੧॥
paarabraham saa agan meh saarree |1|
has been burnt in the fire by the Supreme Lord God. ||1||
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਉਹ ਦਾੜ੍ਹੀ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਸਾੜ ਦਿੱਤੀ (ਹੁੰਦੀ) ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਕੇ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਖੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪ ਭੀ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ-ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਸੜਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ॥੧॥
ਪੂਰਾ ਨਿਆਉ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
pooraa niaau kare karataar |
The Creator administers true justice.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਸਦਾ) ਨਿਆਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਐਸਾ ਨਿਆਂ) ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਉਕਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਅਪੁਨੇ ਦਾਸ ਕਉ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
apune daas kau raakhanahaar |1| rahaau |
He is the Saving Grace of His slaves. ||1||Pause||
ਉਹ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਸਮਰੱਥਾ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਿ ਪਰਤਾਪੁ ॥
aad jugaad pragatt parataap |
In the beginning, and throughout the ages, His glory is manifest.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਗਤ ਦੇ) ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ, ਜੁਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਤੇਜ-ਪਰਤਾਪ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ,
ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਮੁਆ ਉਪਜਿ ਵਡ ਤਾਪੁ ॥੨॥
nindak muaa upaj vadd taap |2|
The slanderer died after contracting the deadly fever. ||2||
(ਕਿ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ) ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪ) ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਬੜਾ ਦੁੱਖ-ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਤਿਨਿ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਜਿ ਰਖੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
tin maariaa ji rakhai na koe |
He is killed, and no one can save him.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗਰੀਬਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਵਧੀਕੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ (ਆਪ) ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਬਚਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ,
ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਮੰਦੀ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥
aagai paachhai mandee soe |3|
Here and hereafter, his reputation is evil. ||3||
(ਅਜੇਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ) ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਤੇ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਬਦਨਾਮੀ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਅਪੁਨੇ ਦਾਸ ਰਾਖੈ ਕੰਠਿ ਲਾਇ ॥
apune daas raakhai kantth laae |
The Lord hugs His slaves close in His Embrace.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਉੱਚੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਪੂਰਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਸਰਣਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੪॥੯੮॥੧੬੭॥
saran naanak har naam dhiaae |4|98|167|
Nanak seeks the Lord's Sanctuary, and meditates on the Naam. ||4||98||167||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਉ, ਤੇ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਸਦਾ) ਸਿਮਰ ॥੪॥੯੮॥੧੬੭॥

ਮਹਜਰੁ ਝੂਠਾ ਕੀਤੋਨੁ ਆਪਿ ॥

The memorandum was proven to be false by the Lord Himself.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਵੇਖੋ, ਸਾਡੇ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ) ਮੇਜਰਨਾਮਾ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਝੂਠਾ (ਸਾਬਤ) ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ,
ਪਾਪੀ ਕਉ ਲਾਗਾ ਸੰਤਾਪੁ ॥੧॥
paapee kau laagaa santaap |1|
The sinner is now suffering in despair. ||1||
(ਤੇ ਝੂਠ ਅਨਰਥ ਥੱਪਣ ਵਾਲੇ) ਪਾਪੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ) ਬੜਾ ਦੁੱਖ-ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਹੋਇਆ ॥੧॥
ਜਿਸਹਿ ਸਹਾਈ ਗੋਬਿਦੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥
jiseh sahaaee gobid meraa |
Those who have my Lord of the Universe as their support
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮੇਰਾ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਈ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਸੁ ਕਉ ਜਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਆਵੈ ਨੇਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tis kau jam nahee aavai neraa |1| rahaau |
- death does not even approach them. ||1||Pause||
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਾਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਬੋਲੈ ਕੂੜੁ ॥

In the True Court, they lie
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਹਾਨੀ ਪੁਚਾਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਝੂਠ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਿਰੁ ਹਾਥ ਪਛੋੜੈ ਅੰਧਾ ਮੂੜੁ ॥੨॥
sir haath pachhorrai andhaa moorr |2|
the blind fools strike their own heads with their own hands. ||2||
ਉਹ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਮੂਰਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਿਰ ਆਪਣਾ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪਿੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਹ ਪਛੁਤਾਵੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ॥੨॥
ਰੋਗ ਬਿਆਪੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਪਾਪ ॥

Sickness afflicts those who commit sins
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਿਆਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਉਹ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਰੋਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਗ੍ਰਸੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਅਦਲੀ ਹੋਇ ਬੈਠਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪਿ ॥੩॥

God Himself sits as the Judge. ||3||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਨਿਆਂ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਕੇ (ਕਚਹਿਰੀ ਲਾਈ) ਬੈਠਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਕੋਈ ਠੱਗੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ) ॥੩॥
ਅਪਨ ਕਮਾਇਐ ਆਪੇ ਬਾਧੇ ॥
apan kamaaeiai aape baadhe |
By their own actions, they are bound and gagged.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਜੀਵ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਬੱਝੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਦਰਬੁ ਗਇਆ ਸਭੁ ਜੀਅ ਕੈ ਸਾਥੈ ॥੪॥
darab geaa sabh jeea kai saathai |4|
All their wealth is gone, along with their lives. ||4||
(ਧਨ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਜੀਵ ਪਾਪ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ) ਸਾਰਾ ਹੀ ਧਨ ਜਿੰਦ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਹੱਥੋਂ) ਚਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਰੇ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥

ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਡਿੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਰਾਖੀ ਪੈਜ ਮੇਰੈ ਕਰਤਾਰਿ ॥੫॥੯੯॥੧੬੮॥

my Creator has preserved my honor. ||5||99||168||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਰੱਖ ਲਈ ਹੈ ॥੫॥੯੯॥੧੬੮॥

The dust of the feet of the humble beings is so sweet to my mind.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੀ ਚਰਨ-ਧੂੜ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਪੂਰਬਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Perfect karma is the mortal's pre-ordained destiny. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਪੂਰਬਲੇ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਧੁਰ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਲੇਖ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
