ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਜੋ ਮਾਨਿਓ ਦੇਹ ਸੋ ਤਉ ਤੇਰਉ ਹੋਇ ਹੈ ਖੇਹ ॥
asathir jo maanio deh so tau terau hoe hai kheh |
You believed that this body was permanent, but it shall turn to dust.
ਜਿਸ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਮਝੀ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇਰਾ ਉਹ (ਸਰੀਰ) ਤਾਂ (ਜ਼ਰੂਰ) ਸੁਆਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਇਗਾ।
ਕਿਉ ਨ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੇਹਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਨਿਲਾਜ ਰੇ ॥੧॥
kiau na har ko naam lehi moorakh nilaaj re |1|
Why don't you chant the Name of the Lord, you shameless fool? ||1||
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਹੇ ਬੇ-ਸ਼ਰਮ! ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਪਦਾ? ॥੧॥
ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੀਏ ਆਨਿ ਛਾਡਿ ਦੇ ਤੈ ਮਨ ਕੋ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
raam bhagat hee aan chhaadd de tai man ko maan |
Let devotional worship of the Lord enter into your heart, and abandon the intellectualism of your mind.
(ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਦਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਹ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਲੈ!
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਇਹ ਬਖਾਨਿ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਬਿਰਾਜੁ ਰੇ ॥੨॥੪॥
naanak jan ih bakhaan jag meh biraaj re |2|4|
O Servant Nanak, this is the way to live in the world. ||2||4||
ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ (ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ) ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਹੀ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਸੁਚੱਜਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਜੀਉ! ॥੨॥੪॥
ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ 'ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ' ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਭੈ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਵੈਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਕਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਸ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ), ਜੋ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸਹਸਕ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਸਲੋਕ।
ਪੜਿੑ ਪੁਸ੍ਤਕ ਸੰਧਿਆ ਬਾਦੰ ॥
parra pustak sandhiaa baadan |
You study the scriptures, say your prayers and argue
ਪੰਡਿਤ (ਵੇਦ ਆਦਿਕ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਸੰਧਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਚਰਚਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਿਲ ਪੂਜਸਿ ਬਗੁਲ ਸਮਾਧੰ ॥
sil poojas bagul samaadhan |
you worship stones and sit like a crane, pretending to meditate.
ਮੂਰਤੀ ਪੂਜਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਬਗਲੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਮੁਖਿ ਝੂਠੁ ਬਿਭੂਖਨ ਸਾਰੰ ॥
mukh jhootth bibhookhan saaran |
You speak lies and well-ornamented falsehood,
ਮੁਖੋਂ ਝੂਠ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ (ਪਰ ਉਸ ਝੂਠ ਨੂੰ) ਬੜੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਗਹਣਿਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਵਿਖਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ
ਤ੍ਰੈਪਾਲ ਤਿਹਾਲ ਬਿਚਾਰੰ ॥
traipaal tihaal bichaaran |
and recite your daily prayers three times a day.
(ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼) ਤਿੰਨ ਵੇਲੇ ਗਾਯਤ੍ਰੀ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਗਲਿ ਮਾਲਾ ਤਿਲਕ ਲਿਲਾਟੰ ॥
gal maalaa tilak lilaattan |
The mala is around your neck, and the sacred tilak mark is on your forehead.
ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਲਾ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਤਿਲਕ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਦੁਇ ਧੋਤੀ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਕਪਾਟੰ ॥
due dhotee basatr kapaattan |
You wear two loin cloths, and keep your head covered.
ਸਦਾ ਦੋ ਧੋਤੀਆਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਪਾਸ) ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ (ਸੰਧਿਆ ਕਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ) ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਇਕ ਵਸਤ੍ਰ ਧਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੋ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰ ਕਰਮੰ ॥
jo jaanas brahaman karaman |
If you know God and the nature of karma,
ਪਰ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ,
ਸਭ ਫੋਕਟ ਨਿਸਚੈ ਕਰਮੰ ॥
sabh fokatt nisachai karaman |
you know that all these rituals and beliefs are useless.
ਤਦ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜਾਣ ਲਵੋ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਫੋਕੇ ਹਨ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਸਚੌ ਧੵਿਾਵੈ ॥
kahu naanak nisachau dhayiaavai |
Says Nanak, meditate on the Lord with faith.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸਰਧਾ ਧਾਰ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰੇ (ਕੇਵਲ ਇਹੋ ਰਸਤਾ ਲਾਭਦਾਇਕ ਹੈ, ਪਰ)
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਟ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
bin satigur baatt na paavai |1|
Without the True Guru, no one finds the Way. ||1||
ਇਹ ਰਸਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਦਾ ॥੧॥
ਨਿਹਫਲੰ ਤਸੵ ਜਨਮਸੵ ਜਾਵਦ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨ ਬਿੰਦਤੇ ॥
nihafalan tasay janamasay jaavad braham na bindate |
The mortal's life is fruitless, as long as he does not know God.
ਜਦ ਤਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦਾ, ਤਦ ਤਕ ਉਸ ਦਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖਾ) ਜਨਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਗਰੰ ਸੰਸਾਰਸੵ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਤਰਹਿ ਕੇ ॥
saagaran sansaarasay gur parasaadee tareh ke |
Only a few, by Guru's Grace, cross over the world-ocean.
(ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਹੈ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
karan kaaran samarath hai kahu naanak beechaar |
The Creator, the Cause of causes, is All-powerful. Thus speaks Nanak, after deep deliberation.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ) ਆਖ, (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ) ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰ, (ਉਹ) ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਸਭ ਤਾਕਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ।
ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕਰਤੇ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਲ ਰਖੀ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
kaaran karate vas hai jin kal rakhee dhaar |2|
The Creation is under the control of the Creator. By His Power, He sustains and supports it. ||2||
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ) ਸੱਤਿਆ ਟਿਕਾ ਰੱਖੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦੇ ਇਖ਼ਤਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਹਰੇਕ) ਸਬਬ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਜੋਗ ਸਬਦੰ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਬਦੰ ਬੇਦ ਸਬਦੰ ਤ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਹ ॥
jog sabadan giaan sabadan bed sabadan ta braahamanah |
The Shabad is Yoga, the Shabad is spiritual wisdom the Shabad is the Vedas for the Brahmin.
(ਵਰਨ-ਵੰਡ ਦੇ ਵਿਤਕਰੇ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ) ਜੋਗ ਦਾ ਧਰਮ ਗਿਆਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ (ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ ) ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਧਰਮ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਹੈ
ਖੵਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਬਦੰ ਸੂਰ ਸਬਦੰ ਸੂਦ੍ਰ ਸਬਦੰ ਪਰਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਤਹ ॥
khayatree sabadan soor sabadan soodr sabadan paraa kritah |
The Shabad is heroic bravery for the Khshaatriya the Shabad is service to others for the Soodra.
ਖਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਧਰਮ ਸੂਰਮਿਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ੂਦਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਧਰਮ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਰਬ ਸਬਦੰ ਤ ਏਕ ਸਬਦੰ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਭੇਉ ॥
sarab sabadan ta ek sabadan je ko jaanas bheo |
The Shabad for all is the Shabad, the Word of the One God, for one who knows this secret.
ਪਰ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਧਰਮ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਏ। ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਭੇਤ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਲਏ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਦਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਸੋਈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦੇਉ ॥੩॥
naanak taa ko daas hai soee niranjan deo |3|
Nanak is the slave of the Divine, Immaculate Lord. ||3||
ਨਾਨਕ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਏਕ ਕ੍ਰਿਸ੍ਨੰ ਤ ਸਰਬ ਦੇਵਾ ਦੇਵ ਦੇਵਾ ਤ ਆਤਮਹ ॥
ek krisanan ta sarab devaa dev devaa ta aatamah |
The One Lord is the Divinity of all divinities. He is the Divinity of the soul.
ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਾ ਹੈ, ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਭੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਤਮੰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬਾਸ੍ਵਦੇਵਸੵ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਭੇਵ ॥
aataman sree baasvadevasay je koee jaanas bhev |
Nanak is the slave of that one who knows the Secrets of the soul and the Supreme Lord God.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭੇਤ ਜਾਣ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਦਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਸੋਈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ॥੪॥
naanak taa ko daas hai soee niranjan dev |4|
He is the Divine Immaculate Lord Himself. ||4||
ਨਾਨਕ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ ॥੪॥

ਕਤੰਚ ਮਾਤਾ ਕਤੰਚ ਪਿਤਾ ਕਤੰਚ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਸੁਤਹ ॥
katanch maataa katanch pitaa katanch banitaa binod sutah |
Who is the mother, and who is the father? Who is the son, and what is the pleasure of marriage?
ਕਿੱਥੇ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਮਾਂ, ਤੇ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਿਉ? ਤੇ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਲਾਡ-ਪਿਆਰ?
ਕਤੰਚ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਮੀਤ ਹਿਤ ਬੰਧਵ ਕਤੰਚ ਮੋਹ ਕੁਟੰਬੵਤੇ ॥
katanch bhraat meet hit bandhav katanch moh kuttanbayate |
Who is the brother, friend, companion and relative? Who is emotionally attached to the family?
ਕਿੱਥੇ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਭਰਾ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਹਿਤੂ ਤੇ ਸਨਬੰਧੀ? ਤੇ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ?
ਕਤੰਚ ਚਪਲ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਰੂਪੰ ਪੇਖੰਤੇ ਤਿਆਗੰ ਕਰੋਤਿ ॥
katanch chapal mohanee roopan pekhante tiaagan karot |
Who is restlessly attached to beauty? It leaves, as soon as we see it.
ਕਿੱਥੇ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਮੋਹਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਇਹ ਚੰਚਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਵੇਖਦਿਆਂ ਵੇਖਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਰਹੰਤ ਸੰਗ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਸਿਮਰਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਬਧੵੰ ਅਚੁਤ ਤਨਹ ॥੧॥
rahant sang bhagavaan simaran naanak labadhayan achut tanah |1|
Only the meditative remembrance of God remains with us. O Nanak, it brings the blessings of the Saints, the sons of the Imperishable Lord. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਨਾਲ (ਸਦਾ) ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ (ਹੀ), ਤੇ ਇਹ ਭਜਨ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ॥੧॥
