ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ 'ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ' ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਭੈ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਵੈਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਕਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਸ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ), ਜੋ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।

Raag Jaijaavantee, Ninth Mehl:
ਰਾਗ ਜੈਜਾਵੰਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਗਬਹਾਦਰ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ।
ਰਾਮੁ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਇਹੈ ਤੇਰੈ ਕਾਜਿ ਹੈ ॥
raam simar raam simar ihai terai kaaj hai |
Meditate in remembrance on the Lord - meditate on the Lord this alone shall be of use to you.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਕਰ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਕਰ! ਇਹ (ਸਿਮਰਨ) ਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਚ (ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਹੈ।
ਮਾਇਆ ਕੋ ਸੰਗੁ ਤਿਆਗੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੂ ਕੀ ਸਰਨਿ ਲਾਗੁ ॥
maaeaa ko sang tiaag prabh joo kee saran laag |
Abandon your association with Maya, and take shelter in the Sanctuary of God.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਹ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆ ਰਹੁ।
ਜਗਤ ਸੁਖ ਮਾਨੁ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਝੂਠੋ ਸਭ ਸਾਜੁ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jagat sukh maan mithiaa jhoottho sabh saaj hai |1| rahaau |
Remember that the pleasures of the world are false this whole show is just an illusion. ||1||Pause||
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਸਮਝ! ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਪਸਾਰਾ (ਹੀ) ਸਾਥ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸੁਪਨੇ ਜਿਉ ਧਨੁ ਪਛਾਨੁ ਕਾਹੇ ਪਰਿ ਕਰਤ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
supane jiau dhan pachhaan kaahe par karat maan |
You must understand that this wealth is just a dream. Why are you so proud?
ਇਸ ਧਨ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਪਨੇ (ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ) ਵਾਂਗ ਸਮਝ, ਤੂੰ ਕਾਹਦੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ?
ਬਾਰੂ ਕੀ ਭੀਤਿ ਜੈਸੇ ਬਸੁਧਾ ਕੋ ਰਾਜੁ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
baaroo kee bheet jaise basudhaa ko raaj hai |1|
The empires of the earth are like walls of sand. ||1||
(ਸਾਰੀ) ਧਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਰਾਜ (ਭੀ) ਰੇਤ ਦੀ ਕੰਧ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਨੁ ਕਹਤੁ ਬਾਤ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜੈਹੈ ਤੇਰੋ ਗਾਤੁ ॥
naanak jan kehat baat binas jaihai tero gaat |
Servant Nanak speaks the Truth: your body shall perish and pass away.
ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ (ਤੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ) ਗੱਲ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੇਰਾ (ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ) ਸਰੀਰ (ਭੀ) ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਇਗਾ।
ਛਿਨੁ ਛਿਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਗਇਓ ਕਾਲੁ ਤੈਸੇ ਜਾਤੁ ਆਜੁ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੧॥
chhin chhin kar geo kaal taise jaat aaj hai |2|1|
Moment by moment, yesterday passed. Today is passing as well. ||2||1||
(ਵੇਖ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਦਾ) ਕੱਲ (ਦਾ ਦਿਨ) ਛਿਨ ਛਿਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਬੀਤ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਅੱਜ (ਦਾ ਦਿਨ ਭੀ) ਲੰਘਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੧॥

ਰਾਮੁ ਭਜੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਭਜੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਿਰਾਤੁ ਹੈ ॥
raam bhaj raam bhaj janam siraat hai |
Meditate on the Lord - vibrate on the Lord your life is slipping away.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ! ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਲੰਘਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਹਉ ਕਹਾ ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ ਸਮਝਤ ਨਹ ਕਿਉ ਗਵਾਰ ॥
khau kahaa baar baar samajhat neh kiau gavaar |
Why am I telling you this again and again? You fool - why don't you understand?
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਮੈਂ (ਤੈਨੂੰ) ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਕੀਹ ਆਖਾਂ? ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ?
ਬਿਨਸਤ ਨਹ ਲਗੈ ਬਾਰ ਓਰੇ ਸਮ ਗਾਤੁ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
binasat neh lagai baar ore sam gaat hai |1| rahaau |
Your body is like a hail-stone it melts away in no time at all. ||1||Pause||
(ਤੇਰਾ ਇਹ) ਸਰੀਰ (ਨਾਸ ਹੋਣ ਵਿਚ) ਗੜੇ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਦੇ) ਨਾਸ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਚਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਗਲ ਭਰਮ ਡਾਰਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੇਹਿ ॥
sagal bharam ddaar dehi gobind ko naam lehi |
So give up all your doubts, and utter the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਭਟਕਣਾਂ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਹ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰ।
ਅੰਤਿ ਬਾਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਇਹੈ ਏਕੁ ਜਾਤੁ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ant baar sang terai ihai ek jaat hai |1|
At the very last moment, this alone shall go along with you. ||1||
ਅੰਤਲੇ ਸਮੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਜਿਉ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੌ ਜਸੁ ਹੀਏ ਧਾਰਿ ॥
bikhiaa bikh jiau bisaar prabh kau jas hee dhaar |
Forget the poisonous sins of corruption, and enshrine the Praises of God in your heart.
ਮਾਇਆ (ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਾਂਗ ਭੁਲਾ ਦੇਹ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖ!
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਕਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਿ ਅਉਸਰੁ ਬਿਹਾਤੁ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੨॥
naanak jan keh pukaar aausar bihaat hai |2|2|
Servant Nanak proclaims that this opportunity is slipping away. ||2||2||
ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ (ਤੈਨੂੰ) ਕੂਕ ਕੂਕ ਕੇ ਆਖ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, (ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਸਮਾ) ਬੀਤਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੨॥

ਰੇ ਮਨ ਕਉਨ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਹੈ ਤੇਰੀ ॥
re man kaun gat hoe hai teree |
O mortal, what will your condition be?
ਹੇ ਮਨ! (ਸੋਚ ਕਿ) ਤੇਰੀ ਕੀਹ ਦਸ਼ਾ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ?
ਇਹ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੋ ਤਉ ਨਹੀ ਸੁਨਿਓ ਕਾਨਿ ॥
eih jag meh raam naam so tau nahee sunio kaan |
In this world, you have not listened to the Lord's Name.
ਇਸ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਤੇਰਾ ਅਮਲ ਸਾਥੀ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹੀ) ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਨਾਮ) ਤੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਬਿਖਿਅਨ ਸਿਉ ਅਤਿ ਲੁਭਾਨਿ ਮਤਿ ਨਾਹਿਨ ਫੇਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bikhian siau at lubhaan mat naahin feree |1| rahaau |
You are totally engrossed in corruption and sin you have not turned your mind away from them at all. ||1||Pause||
ਤੂੰ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ (ਆਪਣੀ) ਸੁਰਤ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਕਦੇ) ਪਰਤਾਂਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਮਾਨਸ ਕੋ ਜਨਮੁ ਲੀਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਨਹ ਨਿਮਖ ਕੀਨੁ ॥
maanas ko janam leen simaran neh nimakh keen |
You obtained this human life, but you have not remembered the Lord in meditation, even for an instant.
ਤੂੰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ (ਤਾਂ) ਹਾਸਲ ਕੀਤਾ, ਪਰ ਕਦੇ ਰਤਾ ਭਰ ਸਮੇ ਲਈ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਦਾਰਾ ਸੁਖ ਭਇਓ ਦੀਨੁ ਪਗਹੁ ਪਰੀ ਬੇਰੀ ॥੧॥
daaraa sukh bheo deen pagahu paree beree |1|
For the sake of pleasure, you have become subservient to your woman, and now your feet are bound. ||1||
ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਅਧੀਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ) ਬੇੜੀ ਪਈ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਕਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਿ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਜਿਉ ਜਗ ਪਸਾਰੁ ॥
naanak jan keh pukaar supanai jiau jag pasaar |
Servant Nanak proclaims that the vast expanse of this world is just a dream.
ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ (ਤੈਨੂੰ) ਪੁਕਾਰ ਕੇ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਹ ਕਿਉ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਚੇਰੀ ॥੨॥੩॥
simarat neh kiau muraar maaeaa jaa kee cheree |2|3|
Why not meditate on the Lord? Even Maya is His slave. ||2||3||
ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਦਾਸੀ ਹੈ ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ ॥੨॥੩॥

ਬੀਤ ਜੈਹੈ ਬੀਤ ਜੈਹੈ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਕਾਜੁ ਰੇ ॥
beet jaihai beet jaihai janam akaaj re |
Slipping away - your life is uselessly slipping away.
ਜੀਵਨ (ਦਾ ਸਮਾ) ਅਸਫਲ ਲੰਘਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਜ਼ਰਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਿਸਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਸਮਝਤ ਨਹ ਰੇ ਅਜਾਨ ॥
nis din sun kai puraan samajhat neh re ajaan |
Night and day, you listen to the Puraanas, but you do not understand them, you ignorant fool!
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਰਾਤ ਦਿਨ ਪੁਰਾਣ (ਆਦਿਕ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ) ਸੁਣ ਕੇ (ਭੀ) ਤੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ।
ਕਾਲੁ ਤਉ ਪਹੂਚਿਓ ਆਨਿ ਕਹਾ ਜੈਹੈ ਭਾਜਿ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kaal tau pahoochio aan kahaa jaihai bhaaj re |1| rahaau |
Death has arrived now where will you run? ||1||Pause||
ਮੌਤ (ਦਾ ਸਮਾ) ਤਾਂ (ਨੇੜੇ) ਆ ਪਹੁੰਚਿਆ ਹੈ (ਦੱਸ, ਤੂੰ ਇਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਭੱਜ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਏਂਗਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
