Presenting a shabad has a beginning, a middle and an end. When this shape is clear, the sangat joins in easily.
What happens |
|---|---|
Many jathas begin with the mangal ("Ik Oankaar Satgur Prasad"). |
Without taal, slowly showing the shape of the raag, starting from the lower notes. Keep it short at first (30–60 seconds). |
The Rahao line, in taal. Repeat it two or three times so the sangat can sing along. |
The other lines, often in the higher notes. Back to the sthai after each antra. |
In the last antras the tempo may slowly rise. Keep eye contact with the tabla player. |
The sthai last, finishing on sam with a tihai or a slowing tempo. |
The harmonium between lines
When the singer takes a breath or a line ends, the harmonium can fill the gap with a short phrase — often by echoing the end of the line. Keep it in the raag, keep it short, and end on the note where the next line begins.
Present the Bilawal shabad (chapter 16) with this full shape: a short alaap, the sthai three times, both antras, and a finish on sam with a tihai. Record yourself and listen back.
