ਓਹੁ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਦੇਇ ॥
ohu bidhaataa man tan dee |
He is the Architect of Destiny He blesses us with mind and body.
ਉਹ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ (ਸਭ ਜੀਆਂ) ਨੂੰ ਜਿੰਦ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਓਹੁ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਇ ॥
ohu bidhaataa man mukh soe |
That Architect of Destiny is in my mind and mouth.
ਸਭ ਜੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
prabh jagajeevan avar na koe |
God is the Life of the world there is no other at all.
ਤੇ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਹੀ) ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ (ਆਸਰਾ) ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੯॥
naanak naam rate pat hoe |9|
O Nanak, imbued with the Naam, the Name of the Lord, one is honored. ||9||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਉਸ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀਜ ਕੇ (ਹੀ) ਆਦਰ-ਸਤਕਾਰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥
ਰਾਜਨ ਰਾਮ ਰਵੈ ਹਿਤਕਾਰਿ ॥
raajan raam ravai hitakaar |
One who lovingly chants the Name of the Sovereign Lord King,
(ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼-ਸਰੂਪ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਰਣ ਮਹਿ ਲੂਝੈ ਮਨੂਆ ਮਾਰਿ ॥
ran meh loojhai manooaa maar |
fights the battle and conquers his own mind
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੋਝੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਜਗਤ-ਅਖਾੜੇ ਵਿਚ (ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਵੈਰੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ) ਲੜਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਨੰਤਿ ਰਹੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
raat dinant rahai rang raataa |
day and night, he remains imbued with the Lord's Love.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਿਨੇ ਰਾਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤੀਨਿ ਭਵਨ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
teen bhavan jug chaare jaataa |
He is famous throughout the three worlds and the four ages.
ਤਿੰਨ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਤੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਪੱਕੀ) ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਨਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਸੋ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਜੇਹਾ ॥
jin jaataa so tis hee jehaa |
One who knows the Lord, becomes like Him.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਪਾ ਲਈ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੀ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਮਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਉਤਾਂਹ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ),
ਅਤਿ ਨਿਰਮਾਇਲੁ ਸੀਝਸਿ ਦੇਹਾ ॥
at niramaaeil seejhas dehaa |
He becomes absolutely immaculate, and his body is sanctified.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਾ ਬੜਾ ਹੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਭੀ ਸਫਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਰਹਸੀ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਇਕ ਭਾਇ ॥
rahasee raam ridai ik bhaae |
His heart is happy, in love with the One Lord.
ਆਨੰਦ-ਸਰੂਪ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਦਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੧੦॥
antar sabad saach liv laae |10|
He lovingly centers his attention deep within upon the True Word of the Shabad. ||10||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੦॥
ਰੋਸੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਜੈ ਰਹਣੁ ਨਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ॥
ros na keejai amrit peejai rehan nahee sansaare |
Don't be angry - drink in the Ambrosial Nectar you shall not remain in this world forever.
(ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਪੱਟੀ ਉਤੇ ਲਿਖ, ਉਸ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਨਾਲ) ਰੁਸੇਵਾਂ ਹੀ ਨਾਹ ਕਰੀ ਰੱਖੋ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪੀਉ। ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਦਾ ਵਸੇਬਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਰਾਜੇ ਰਾਇ ਰੰਕ ਨਹੀ ਰਹਣਾ ਆਇ ਜਾਇ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ॥
raaje raae rank nahee rahanaa aae jaae jug chaare |
The ruling kings and the paupers shall not remain they come and go, throughout the four ages.
ਰਾਜੇ ਹੋਣ, ਅਮੀਰ ਹੋਣ, ਚਾਹੇ ਕੰਗਾਲ ਹੋਣ, ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਇਥੇ ਸਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ। ਜੋ ਜੰਮਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮਰਨਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਹ ਨਿਯਮ) ਸਦਾ ਲਈ (ਅਟੱਲ) ਹੈ।
ਰਹਣ ਕਹਣ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਕਿਸੁ ਪਹਿ ਕਰਉ ਬਿਨੰਤੀ ॥
rehan kehan te rahai na koee kis peh krau binantee |
Everyone says that they will remain, but none of them remain unto whom should I offer my prayer?
ਇਥੇ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਲਈ ਤਰਲੇ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਭੀ ਕੋਈ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ, ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਤਰਲੇ ਲੈਣੇ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹਨ।
ਏਕੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਰੋਧਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਮਤੀ ॥੧੧॥
ek sabad raam naam nirodhar gur devai pat matee |11|
The One Shabad, the Name of the Lord, will never fail you the Guru grants honor and understanding. ||11||
(ਹਾਂ, ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਓ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਣ ਦੀ ਅਕਲ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੧॥
ਲਾਜ ਮਰੰਤੀ ਮਰਿ ਗਈ ਘੂਘਟੁ ਖੋਲਿ ਚਲੀ ॥
laaj marantee mar gee ghooghatt khol chalee |
My shyness and hesitation have died and gone, and I walk with my face unveiled.
(ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ!) (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਜੀਵ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੀ) ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਨੱਕ-ਨਮੂਜ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲੀ (ਪਹਿਲੀ ਅਕਲ) ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਹੁਣ ਉਹ ਲੋਕ-ਲਾਜ ਦਾ ਘੁੰਡ ਲਾਹ ਕੇ ਤੁਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਸੁ ਦਿਵਾਨੀ ਬਾਵਰੀ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਸੰਕ ਟਲੀ ॥
saas divaanee baavaree sir te sank ttalee |
The confusion and doubt from my crazy, insane mother-in-law has been removed from over my head.
(ਜਿਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਨ ਤੋਂ ਰੋਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ, ਉਸ) ਝੱਲੀ ਕਮਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਸਹਿਮ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੋਂ ਹਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪ੍ਰੇਮਿ ਬੁਲਾਈ ਰਲੀ ਸਿਉ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਨੰਦੁ ॥
prem bulaaee ralee siau man meh sabad anand |
My Beloved has summoned me with joyful caresses my mind is filled with the bliss of the Shabad.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਪਿਆਰ ਤੇ ਚਾਉ ਨਾਲ ਸੱਦਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਆਪਣੀ ਯਾਦ ਦੀ ਖਿੱਚ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ), ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ) ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਆਨੰਦ (ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ) ਹੈ।
ਲਾਲਿ ਰਤੀ ਲਾਲੀ ਭਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਈ ਨਿਚਿੰਦੁ ॥੧੨॥
laal ratee laalee bhee guramukh bhee nichind |12|
Imbued with the Love of my Beloved, I have become Gurmukh, and carefree. ||12||
ਜੋ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲੀ ਕੋਈ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ, ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ-ਪਤੀ (ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ) ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਉਤੇ ਲਾਲੀ ਭਖ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧੨॥
ਲਾਹਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਜਪਿ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
laahaa naam ratan jap saar |
Chant the jewel of the Naam, and earn the profit of the Lord.
(ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ, ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਅਸਲ ਖੱਟੀ-ਕਮਾਈ ਹੈ।
ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ॥
lab lobh buraa ahankaar |
Greed, avarice, evil and egotism
ਜੀਭ ਦਾ ਚਸਕਾ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਲਾਲਚ, ਅਹੰਕਾਰ (ਇਹ ਕਰਮ ਬੁਰਾ ਹੈ)।
ਲਾੜੀ ਚਾੜੀ ਲਾਇਤਬਾਰੁ ॥
laarree chaarree laaeitabaar |
slander, inuendo and gossip
ਨਿੰਦਿਆ, ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਾਮਦ, ਚੁਗ਼ਲੀ-ਇਹ ਹਰੇਕ ਕੰਮ ਮਾੜਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਅੰਧਾ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਗਵਾਰੁ ॥
manamukh andhaa mugadh gavaar |
the self-willed manmukh is blind, foolish and ignorant.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਲਬ ਲੋਭ ਆਦਿਕ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਮੂਰਖ, ਮੂੜ੍ਹ, ਤੇ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਹੀ ਰਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ)।
ਲਾਹੇ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਆਇਆ ਜਗਿ ॥
laahe kaaran aaeaa jag |
For the sake of earning the profit of the Lord, the mortal comes into the world.
ਜੀਵ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਝ ਖੱਟਣ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹੋਇ ਮਜੂਰੁ ਗਇਆ ਠਗਾਇ ਠਗਿ ॥
hoe majoor geaa tthagaae tthag |
But he becomes a mere slave laborer, and is mugged by the mugger, Maya.
ਪਰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ) ਗੋੱਲਾ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਹੱਥੋਂ ਜੀਵਨ-ਖੇਡ ਹਾਰ ਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਲਾਹਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ॥
laahaa naam poonjee vesaahu |
One who earns the profit of the Naam, with the capital of faith,
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਰਧਾ ਨੂੰ ਰਾਸ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਇਸ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਖੱਟਦਾ-ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੀ ਪਤਿ ਸਚਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ॥੧੩॥
naanak sachee pat sachaa paatisaahu |13|
O Nanak, is truly honored by the True Supreme King. ||13||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
ਆਇ ਵਿਗੂਤਾ ਜਗੁ ਜਮ ਪੰਥੁ ॥
aae vigootaa jag jam panth |
The world is ruined on the path of Death.
ਜੀਵ (ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ) ਜਨਮ ਲੈ ਕੇ (ਗੋਪਾਲ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਰਾਹ ਫੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਈ ਨ ਮੇਟਣ ਕੋ ਸਮਰਥੁ ॥
aaee na mettan ko samarath |
No one has the power to erase Maya's influence.
ਅਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਟਾਣ-ਜੋਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਆਥਿ ਸੈਲ ਨੀਚ ਘਰਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
aath sail neech ghar hoe |
If wealth visits the home of the lowliest clown,
(ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਝੱਲ-ਪੁਣਾ ਵੇਖੋ ਕਿ) ਜੇ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਿਸੇ ਚੰਦਰੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਵੇ,
ਆਥਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਨਿਵੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਦੋਇ ॥
aath dekh nivai jis doe |
seeing that wealth, all pay their respects to him.
ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਗਰੀਬ ਅਮੀਰ) ਦੋਵੇਂ (ਉਸ ਚੰਦਰੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਭੀ) ਲਿਫ਼ਦੇ ਹਨ
ਆਥਿ ਹੋਇ ਤਾ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਸਿਆਨਾ ॥
aath hoe taa mugadh siaanaa |
Even an idiot is thought of as clever, if he is rich.
ਜੇ ਮਾਇਆ (ਪੱਲੇ) ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਬੰਦਾ ਭੀ ਸਿਆਣਾ (ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ) ਹੈ।
ਭਗਤਿ ਬਿਹੂਨਾ ਜਗੁ ਬਉਰਾਨਾ ॥
bhagat bihoonaa jag bauraanaa |
Without devotional worship, the world is insane.
ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਝਾ ਹੋਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜਗਤ ਝੱਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਇ ॥
sabh meh varatai eko soe |
The One Lord is contained among all.
(ਝੱਲ-ਪੁਣੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਕਿ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਗ਼ਰੀਬ ਹੈ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਅਮੀਰ) ਉਹ (ਗੋਪਾਲ) ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧੪॥
jis no kirapaa kare tis paragatt hoe |14|
He reveals Himself, unto those whom He blesses with His Grace. ||14||
ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸੂਝ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ (ਗੋਪਾਲ ਆਪ) ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੪॥
ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਥਾਪਿ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ॥
jug jug thaap sadaa niravair |
Throughout the ages, the Lord is eternally established He has no vengeance.
(ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ! ਉਸ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਪੱਟੀ ਤੇ ਲਿਖ) ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ (ਬਹੁ-ਰੰਗੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਨਿਰਵੈਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਣਿ ਨਹੀ ਧੰਧਾ ਧੈਰੁ ॥
janam maran nahee dhandhaa dhair |
He is not subject to birth and death He is not entangled in worldly affairs.
ਜੋ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ) ਧੰਧਾ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ।
ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ॥
jo deesai so aape aap |
Whatever is seen, is the Lord Himself.
ਜੋ ਕੁਝ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਦਿੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਸ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਸਰੂਪ ਹੈ)।
ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਆਪੇ ਘਟ ਥਾਪਿ ॥

Creating Himself, He establishes Himself in the heart.
ਉਹ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਿ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਧੰਧੈ ਲੋਈ ॥
aap agochar dhandhai loee |
He Himself is unfathomable He links people to their affairs.
(ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ!) ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਉਹ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਹੈ। ਜਗਤ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸਿਆ ਪਿਆ) ਹੈ।
ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
jog jugat jagajeevan soee |
He is the Way of Yoga, the Life of the World.
(ਉਹ) ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੱਢ ਕੇ) ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਣ ਦੀ ਜਾਚ ਸਿਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਿ ਆਚਾਰੁ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
kar aachaar sach sukh hoee |
Living a righteous lifestyle, true peace is found.
(ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ!) ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ (ਗੋਪਾਲ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ) ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਕਰਤੱਬ ਬਣਾ, ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਸੁਖ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਿਵ ਹੋਈ ॥੧੫॥
naam vihoonaa mukat kiv hoee |15|
Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, how can anyone find liberation? ||15||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਧੰਧਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ॥੧੫॥
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਵੇਰੋਧੁ ਸਰੀਰ ॥
vin naavai verodh sareer |
Without the Name, even one's own body is an enemy.
(ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ! ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਪੱਟੀ ਉਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਿਖਦਾ?) ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਿਉ ਨ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਕਾਟਹਿ ਮਨ ਪੀਰ ॥

Why not meet the Lord, and take away the pain of your mind?
ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ (ਗੋਪਾਲ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ) ਨਹੀਂ ਜੁੜਦਾ? ਤੇ, ਕਿਉਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਰੋਗ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ? (ਗੋਪਾਲ ਦਾ)
ਵਾਟ ਵਟਾਊ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
vaatt vattaaoo aavai jaae |
The traveller comes and goes along the highway.
(ਗੋਪਾਲ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਪੱਟੀ ਤੇ ਲਿਖਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਜੀਵ-ਮੁਸਾਫ਼ਿਰ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਜਿਹਾ) ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਤਿਹਾ ਹੀ ਇਥੋਂ) ਤੁਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕਿਆ ਲੇ ਆਇਆ ਕਿਆ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥
kiaa le aaeaa kiaa palai paae |
What did he bring when he came, and what will he take away when he goes?
(ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਤੋਂ) ਸੱਖਣਾ ਹੀ ਇਥੇ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਇਥੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਭੀ) ਕੋਈ ਆਤਮਕ ਖੱਟੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਖੱਟਦਾ।
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਤੋਟਾ ਸਭ ਥਾਇ ॥

Without the Name, one loses everywhere.
ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਘਾਟਾ ਹੀ ਘਾਟਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ ਜੋ ਭੀ ਕਿਰਤ-ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਖੋਟੀ ਹੋਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉੱਚੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਪਰੇ ਲੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ)।
ਲਾਹਾ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਾ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਝਾਇ ॥
laahaa milai jaa dee bujhaae |
The profit is earned, when the Lord grants understanding.
ਪਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਖੱਟੀ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਆਪ ਇਹ ਸੂਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਵਣਜੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ਵਣਜੈ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ॥
vanaj vaapaar vanajai vaapaaree |
In merchandise and trade, the merchant is trading.
ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ-ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਵਣਜ-ਵਪਾਰ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੈਸੀ ਪਤਿ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੧੬॥
vin naavai kaisee pat saaree |16|
Without the Name, how can one find honor and nobility? ||16||
ਤੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ) ਇਸ ਦੀ ਚੰਗੀ ਸਾਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਦੀ ॥੧੬॥
ਗੁਣ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸੋਇ ॥
gun veechaare giaanee soe |
One who contemplates the Lord's Virtues is spiritually wise.
(ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ!) ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੋਪਾਲ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਥਾਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

Through His Virtues, one receives spiritual wisdom.
ਗੋਪਾਲ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜਿਆਂ ਹੀ) ਗੋਪਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਣਦਾਤਾ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥
gunadaataa viralaa sansaar |
How rare in this world, is the Giver of virtue.
ਪਰ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ (ਮਹਾ ਪੁਰਖ ਜੀਵ ਦੀ) ਗੋਪਾਲ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਸਾਚੀ ਕਰਣੀ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

The True way of life comes through contemplation of the Guru.
ਗੋਪਾਲ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਸੱਚਾ ਕਰਤੱਬ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇ ॥
agam agochar keemat nahee paae |
The Lord is inaccessible and unfathomable. His worth cannot be estimated.
(ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ!) ਉਹ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਹੈ, ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰੇ ਉਸ ਤਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਅੱਪੜ ਸਕਦੇ, (ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਸੂਝ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦੀ।
