Bilaaval, First Mehl:
ਮਨ ਕਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਮਨਸਾ ਕਰੈ ॥
man kaa kahiaa manasaa karai |
The human acts according to the wishes of the mind.
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ) ਬੁੱਧੀ (ਭੀ) ਮਨ ਦੇ ਕਹੇ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਪਾਪੁ ਉਚਰੈ ॥
eihu man pun paap ucharai |
This mind feeds on virtue and vice.
ਤੇ, ਇਹ ਮਨ ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਇਹੀ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਸੋਚਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ (ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਪੁੰਨ ਕੀਹ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪਾਪ ਕੀਹ ਹੈ।
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦਿ ਮਾਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
maaeaa mad maate tripat na aavai |
Intoxicated with the wine of Maya, satisfaction never comes.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਨਸ਼ੇ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ) ਰਜੇਵਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਭਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
tripat mukat man saachaa bhaavai |1|
Satisfaction and liberation come, only to one whose mind is pleasing to the True Lord. ||1||
ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਰਜੇਵਾਂ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ ॥੧॥
ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਕਲਤੁ ਸਭੁ ਦੇਖੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਾ ॥
tan dhan kalat sabh dekh abhimaanaa |
Gazing upon his body, wealth, wife and all his possessions, he is proud.
ਹੇ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ਜੀਵ! ਵੇਖ, ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ, ਇਹ ਧਨ, ਇਹ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ-ਇਹ ਸਭ (ਸਦਾ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਭਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ)।
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bin naavai kichh sang na jaanaa |1| rahaau |
But without the Name of the Lord, nothing shall go along with him. ||1||Pause||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਚੀਜ਼ (ਜੀਵ ਦੇ) ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਕੀਚਹਿ ਰਸ ਭੋਗ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਮਨ ਕੇਰੀ ॥
keecheh ras bhog khuseea man keree |
He enjoys tastes, pleasures and joys in his mind.
ਮਾਇਕ ਰਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੋਗ ਕਰੀਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੌਜਾਂ ਮਾਣੀਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ,
ਧਨੁ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਤਨੁ ਭਸਮੈ ਢੇਰੀ ॥
dhan lokaan tan bhasamai dteree |
But his wealth will pass on to other people, and his body will be reduced to ashes.
(ਪਰ ਮੌਤ ਆਉਣ ਤੇ) ਧਨ (ਹੋਰ) ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਦੀ ਢੇਰੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਖਾਕੂ ਖਾਕੁ ਰਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਫੈਲੁ ॥
khaakoo khaak ralai sabh fail |
The entire expanse, like dust, shall mix with dust.
ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਹੀ ਪਸਾਰਾ (ਅੰਤ) ਖ਼ਾਕ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਨਹੀ ਉਤਰੈ ਮੈਲੁ ॥੨॥
bin sabadai nahee utarai mail |2|
Without the Word of the Shabad, his filth is not removed. ||2||
(ਮਨ ਉਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ) ਮੈਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਹਿੰਦੀ ॥੨॥
ਗੀਤ ਰਾਗ ਘਨ ਤਾਲ ਸਿ ਕੂਰੇ ॥
geet raag ghan taal si koore |
The various songs, tunes and rhythms are false.
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਰਾਗ ਤੇ ਤਾਲ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਨ ਪਰਚਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਝੂਠੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਹਨ,
ਤ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੂਰੇ ॥
trihu gun upajai binasai doore |
Trapped by the three qualities, people come and go, far from the Lord.
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵ) ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਸਰ ਹੇਠ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੂਜੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦਰਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
doojee duramat darad na jaae |
In duality, the pain of their evil-mindedness does not leave them.
(ਇਹਨਾਂ ਗੀਤਾਂ ਰਾਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਜੀਵ ਦੀ) ਹੋਰ ਝਾਕ ਤੇ ਭੈੜੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਆਤਮਕ ਰੋਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ।
ਛੂਟੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦਾਰੂ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੩॥
chhoottai guramukh daaroo gun gaae |3|
But the Gurmukh is emancipated by taking the medicine, and singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||3||
(ਇਸ ਦੂਜੀ ਝਾਕ ਤੋਂ, ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਤੋਂ, ਆਤਮਕ ਰੋਗ ਤੋਂ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਹ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਹੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਰੋਗਾਂ ਦਾ) ਦਾਰੂ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਧੋਤੀ ਊਜਲ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਗਲਿ ਮਾਲਾ ॥
dhotee aoojal tilak gal maalaa |
He may wear a clean loin-cloth, apply the ceremonial mark to his forehead, and wear a mala around his neck
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਚਿੱਟੀ ਧੋਤੀ ਪਹਿਨਦੇ ਹਨ (ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ) ਤਿਲਕ ਲਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਲਾ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਪੜਹਿ ਨਾਟ ਸਾਲਾ ॥
antar krodh parreh naatt saalaa |
but if there is anger within him, he is merely reading his part, like an actor in a play.
ਤੇ (ਵੇਦ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ) ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਉੱਦਮ ਇਉਂ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾਟ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ (ਨਾਟ-ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦੀ ਸਿਖਲਾਈ ਕਰ ਕਰਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ)।
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦੁ ਪੀਆ ॥
naam visaar maaeaa mad peea |
Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he drinks in the wine of Maya.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਪੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੋਵੇ, (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ)।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਥੀਆ ॥੪॥
bin gur bhagat naahee sukh theea |4|
Without devotional worship to the Guru, there is no peace. ||4||
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ, ਤੇ ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ॥੪॥
ਸੂਕਰ ਸੁਆਨ ਗਰਧਭ ਮੰਜਾਰਾ ॥
sookar suaan garadhabh manjaaraa |
The human is a pig, a dog, a donkey, a cat,
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੂਰ, ਕੁੱਤੇ, ਖੋਤੇ, ਬਿੱਲੇ-
ਪਸੂ ਮਲੇਛ ਨੀਚ ਚੰਡਾਲਾ ॥
pasoo malechh neech chanddaalaa |
a beast, a filthy, lowly wretch, an outcast,
ਪਸ਼ੂ, ਮਲੇਛ, ਨੀਚ, ਚੰਡਾਲ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਵਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਮੁਹੁ ਫੇਰੇ ਤਿਨੑ ਜੋਨਿ ਭਵਾਈਐ ॥
gur te muhu fere tina jon bhavaaeeai |
if he turns his face away from the Guru. He shall wander in reincarnation.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਮੂੰਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਵਲੋਂ ਮੋੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਬੰਧਨਿ ਬਾਧਿਆ ਆਈਐ ਜਾਈਐ ॥੫॥
bandhan baadhiaa aaeeai jaaeeai |5|
Bound in bondage, he comes and goes. ||5||
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਲਹੈ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ॥
gur sevaa te lahai padaarath |
Serving the Guru, the treasure is found.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਾਮ-ਸਰਮਾਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਕਿਰਤਾਰਥੁ ॥
hiradai naam sadaa kirataarath |
With the Naam in the heart, one always prospers.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਜਾਤ੍ਰਾ ਵਿਚ) ਸਫਲ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੂਛ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
saachee daragah poochh na hoe |
And in the Court of the True Lord, you shall not called to account.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਲੇਖਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਗਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇ ਕੋਈ ਬਾਕੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਨਿਕਲਦੀ)।
ਮਾਨੇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੀਝੈ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੬॥
maane hukam seejhai dar soe |6|
One who obeys the Hukam of the Lord's Command, is approved at the Lord's Door. ||6||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ (ਸਿਰ ਮੱਥੇ) ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
satigur milai ta tis kau jaanai |
Meeting the True Guru, one knows the Lord.
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਰਹੈ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
rahai rajaaee hukam pachhaanai |
Understanding the Hukam of His Command, one acts according to His Will.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ (ਰਾਜ਼ੀ) ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਿ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
hukam pachhaan sachai dar vaas |
Understanding the Hukam of His Command, he dwells in the Court of the True Lord.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਥਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਾਲ ਬਿਕਾਲ ਸਬਦਿ ਭਏ ਨਾਸੁ ॥੭॥
kaal bikaal sabad bhe naas |7|
Through the Shabad, death and birth are ended. ||7||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ (ਦੇ ਗੇੜ) ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੭॥
ਰਹੈ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ॥
rahai ateet jaanai sabh tis kaa |
He remains detached, knowing that everything belongs to God.
(ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਲੋਂ) ਉਪਰਾਮ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਹਰੇਕ ਚੀਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ (ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੋਈ) ਹੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਅਰਪੈ ਹੈ ਇਹੁ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ॥
tan man arapai hai ihu jis kaa |
He dedicates his body and mind unto the One who owns them.
ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾ ਓਹੁ ਆਵੈ ਨਾ ਓਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
naa ohu aavai naa ohu jaae |
He does not come, and he does not go.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੮॥੨॥
naanak saache saach samaae |8|2|
O Nanak, absorbed in Truth, he merges in the True Lord. ||8||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੨॥
ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ਘਰੁ ੧੦ ॥

Bilaaval, Third Mehl, Ashtpadheeyaa, Tenth House:
ਰਾਗ ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ, ਘਰ ੧੦ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਅੱਠ-ਬੰਦਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਾਣੀ।
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik oankaar satigur prasaad |
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਗੁ ਕਊਆ ਮੁਖਿ ਚੁੰਚ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
jag kaooaa mukh chunch giaan |
The world is like a crow with its beak, it croaks spiritual wisdom.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਾਂ (ਵਾਂਗ ਲੌਂ ਲੌਂ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ) ਹੈ, (ਨਿਰਾ) ਮੂੰਹੋਂ (ਹੀ) ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ (ਦੱਸਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਾਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਚੁੰਝ ਨਾਲ 'ਕਾਂ ਕਾਂ' ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
antar lobh jhootth abhimaan |
But deep within there is greed, falsehood and pride.
(ਪਰ ਉਸ ਚੁੰਚ-ਗਿਆਨੀ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਲੋਭ (ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ) ਹੈ, ਝੂਠ (ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ) ਹੈ, ਅਹੰਕਾਰ (ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ) ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਪਾਜੁ ਲਹਗੁ ਨਿਦਾਨਿ ॥੧॥
bin naavai paaj lehag nidaan |1|
Without the Name of the Lord, your thin outer covering shall wear off, you fool. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਵਿਖਾਵਾ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਉੱਘੜ ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਚੀਤਿ ॥
satigur sev naam vasai man cheet |
Serving the True Guru, the Naam shall dwell in your conscious mind.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚੇਤਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਹੋਰ ਝੂਠੁ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur bhette har naam chetaavai bin naavai hor jhootth pareet |1| rahaau |
Meeting with the Guru, the Name of the Lord comes to mind. Without the Name, other loves are false. ||1||Pause||
(ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਜਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ) ਨਾਮ (ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਪਿਆਰ ਝੂਠਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਸਾ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥
gur kahiaa saa kaar kamaavahu |
So do that work, which the Guru tells you to do.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਉਹ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰੋ ਜਿਹੜੀ ਗੁਰ ਨੇ ਦੱਸੀ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ)।
ਸਬਦੁ ਚੀਨਿੑ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹੁ ॥
sabad cheena sehaj ghar aavahu |
Contemplating the Word of the Shabad, you shall come to the home of celestial bliss.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਕਰੋ।
ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ਵਡਾਈ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥੨॥
saachai naae vaddaaee paavahu |2|
Through the True Name, you shall obtain glorious greatness. ||2||
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਦੀ) ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰੋਗੇ ॥੨॥
ਆਪਿ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਲੋਕ ਬੁਝਾਵੈ ॥
aap na boojhai lok bujhaavai |
One who does not understand his own self, but still tries to instruct others,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਾਰੇ) ਆਪ (ਤਾਂ ਕੁਝ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਪਰ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਨ ਕਾ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
man kaa andhaa andh kamaavai |
is mentally blind, and acts in blindness.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪਾ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ) ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਕੋਰਾ ਹੈ (ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਠੇਡੇ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਠਉਰੁ ਕੈਸੇ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
dar ghar mehal tthaur kaise paavai |3|
How can he ever find a home and a place of rest, in the Mansion of the Lord's Presence? ||3||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਅਜਿਹਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਦਰ ਘਰ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਮਹਲ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੩॥
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
har jeeo seveeai antarajaamee |
Serve the Dear Lord, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਨੀ ॥
ghatt ghatt antar jis kee jot samaanee |
deep within each and every heart, His Light is shining forth.
ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਿਸੁ ਨਾਲਿ ਕਿਆ ਚਲੈ ਪਹਨਾਮੀ ॥੪॥
tis naal kiaa chalai pahanaamee |4|
How can anyone hide anything from Him? ||4||
ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਕੋਈ ਲੁਕਾ-ਛਿਪਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੱਲ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੪॥
