ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੈ ਥਾਉ ॥
bhaaee re avar naahee mai thaau |
O Siblings of Destiny, I have no other place to go.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਨਾਮ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ) ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ।
ਮੈ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
mai dhan naam nidhaan hai gur deea bal jaau |1| rahaau |
The Guru has given me the Treasure of the Wealth of the Naam I am a sacrifice to Him. ||1||Pause||
ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਧਨ ਹੈ, ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈ (ਇਹ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਜਿਸ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ) ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਹੀ) ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਉ ॥
guramat pat saabaas tis tis kai sang milaau |
The Guru's Teachings bring honor. Blessed is He-may I meet and be with Him!
ਸ਼ਾਬਾਸ਼ੇ ਉਸ (ਗੁਰੂ) ਤੋਂ ਜਿਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਮਿਲਿਆਂ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ। (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰੇ) ਮੈਂ ਉਸ (ਗੁਰੂ) ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਰਹਾਂ।
ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਘੜੀ ਨ ਜੀਵਊ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
tis bin gharree na jeevaoo bin naavai mar jaau |
Without Him, I cannot live, even for a moment. Without His Name, I die.
(ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ) ਉਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈਂ ਇਕ ਘੜੀ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਮੈ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਟੇਕ ਟਿਕੀ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੨॥
mai andhule naam na veesarai ttek ttikee ghar jaau |2|
I am blind-may I never forget the Naam! Under His Protection, I shall reach my true home. ||2||
(ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰੇ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਹ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਏ, ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਪਰਨਾ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਾਂ ॥੨॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਨਾ ਕਾ ਅੰਧੁਲਾ ਚੇਲੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਠਾਉ ॥
guroo jinaa kaa andhulaa chele naahee tthaau |
Those chaylaas, those devotees, whose spiritual teacher is blind, shall not find their place of rest.
(ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਭੀ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਸੁਜਾਖਾ ਹੋਵੇ) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ (ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਚੇਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਦਾ) ਥਾਂ-ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਉ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਸੁਆਉ ॥
bin satigur naau na paaeeai bin naavai kiaa suaau |
Without the True Guru, the Name is not obtained. Without the Name, what is the use of it all?
(ਪੂਰੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ (ਸੁਚੱਜਾ) ਜੀਵਨ-ਮਨੋਰਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਆਇ ਗਇਆ ਪਛੁਤਾਵਣਾ ਜਿਉ ਸੁੰਞੈ ਘਰਿ ਕਾਉ ॥੩॥
aae geaa pachhutaavanaa jiau sunyai ghar kaau |3|
People come and go, regretting and repenting, like crows in a deserted house. ||3||
ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਚ ਆਇਆ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਗਿਆ, ਪਛਤਾਵਾ ਹੀ (ਨਾਲ ਲੈ ਗਿਆ, ਖਾਲੀ-ਹੱਥ ਹੀ ਜਗ ਤੋਂ ਗਿਆ) ਜਿਵੇਂ ਸੁੰਞੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਂ (ਆ ਕੇ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ॥੩॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਜਿਉ ਕਲਰ ਕੀ ਭੀਤਿ ॥
bin naavai dukh dehuree jiau kalar kee bheet |
Without the Name, the body suffers in pain it crumbles like a wall of sand.
ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ (ਚਿੰਤਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਇਤਨਾ) ਦੁੱਖ ਵਿਆਪਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਸੱਤਿਆ ਇਉਂ ਕਿਰਦੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ) ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਲਰ ਦੀ ਕੰਧ (ਕਿਰਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ)।
ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਨ ਚੀਤਿ ॥
tab lag mehal na paaeeai jab lag saach na cheet |
As long as Truth does not enter into the consciousness, the Mansion of the Lord's Presence is not found.
ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਣ ਲਈ) ਤਦ ਤਕ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਮਹਲ (-ਰੂਪ ਸਹਾਰਾ) ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, ਜਦ ਤਕ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਜੀਵ ਦੇ) ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ।
ਸਬਦਿ ਰਪੈ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੀ ਪਦੁ ਨੀਤਿ ॥੪॥
sabad rapai ghar paaeeai nirabaanee pad neet |4|
Attuned to the Shabad, we enter our home, and obtain the Eternal State of Nirvaanaa. ||4||
ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਮਨ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਜਾਏ, ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ (ਦੀ ਓਟ) ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਲੱਭ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਕੋਈ ਵਾਸਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੋਹ ਸਕਦੀ ॥੪॥
ਹਉ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਛਉ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰ ਪੁਛਿ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਉ ॥
hau gur poochhau aapane gur puchh kaar kamaau |
I ask my Guru for His Advice, and I follow the Guru's Advice.
(ਸੋ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਇਸ 'ਨਿਰਬਾਣ ਪਦ' ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਛਾਂਗੀ, ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਛ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ) ਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਂਗੀ।
ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੀ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
sabad salaahee man vasai haumai dukh jal jaau |
With the Shabads of Praise abiding in the mind, the pain of egotism is burnt away.
ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਾਂਗੀ, (ਭਲਾ ਕਿਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਹੋਵੇ, ਮੇਰਾ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਸੜ ਜਾਏ।
ਸਹਜੇ ਹੋਇ ਮਿਲਾਵੜਾ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਮਿਲਾਉ ॥੫॥
sahaje hoe milaavarraa saache saach milaau |5|
We are intuitively united with Him, and we meet the Truest of the True. ||5||
ਸਹਜ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆਂ ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ, ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਮੇਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ॥੫॥
ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੇ ਤਜਿ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ॥
sabad rate se niramale taj kaam krodh ahankaar |
Those who are attuned to the Shabad are spotless and pure they renounce sexual desire, anger, selfishness and conceit.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ (ਆਦਿਕ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ) ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ (ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ) ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਨਿ ਸਦ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥
naam salaahan sad sadaa har raakheh ur dhaar |
They sing the Praises of the Naam, forever and ever they keep the Lord enshrined within their hearts.
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਲਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੀ ਯਾਦ) ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਮਨਹੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀਐ ਸਭ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੬॥
so kiau manahu visaareeai sabh jeea kaa aadhaar |6|
How could we ever forget Him from our minds? He is the Support of all beings. ||6||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ (ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ) ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਮਨੋਂ ਭੁਲਾਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ॥੬॥
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਸੋ ਮਰਿ ਰਹੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਦੂਜੀ ਵਾਰ ॥
sabad marai so mar rahai fir marai na doojee vaar |
One who dies in the Shabad is beyond death, and shall never die again.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਇਹ ਮਰਨੀ) ਮਰ ਕੇ ਇਸਥਿਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਟਾਕਰੇ ਤੇ ਤਕੜਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਢਹੇ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ) ਮੁੜ ਕਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਰਦਾ।
ਸਬਦੈ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
sabadai hee te paaeeai har naame lagai piaar |
Through the Shabad, we find Him, and embrace love for the Name of the Lord.
(ਇਹ ਅਟੱਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਜਗੁ ਭੂਲਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥੭॥
bin sabadai jag bhoolaa firai mar janamai vaaro vaar |7|
Without the Shabad, the world is deceived it dies and is reborn, over and over again. ||7||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਗਤ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਤੋਂ) ਖੁੰਝਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਸਭ ਸਾਲਾਹੈ ਆਪ ਕਉ ਵਡਹੁ ਵਡੇਰੀ ਹੋਇ ॥
sabh saalaahai aap kau vaddahu vadderee hoe |
All praise themselves, and call themselves the greatest of the great.
ਸਾਰੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਲਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਾਡੀ ਵਧੀਕ ਤੋਂ ਵਧੀਕ ਵਡਿਆਈ-ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਹੋਵੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਹ ਲਾਲਸਾ ਬਣੀ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।)
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਆਪੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੀਐ ਕਹੇ ਸੁਣੇ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥
gur bin aap na cheeneeai kahe sune kiaa hoe |
Without the Guru, one's self cannot be known. By merely speaking and listening, what is accomplished?
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ, ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਕਹਿਣ ਸੁਣਨ ਨਾਲ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਦਾ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੮॥੮॥
naanak sabad pachhaaneeai haumai karai na koe |8|8|
O Nanak, one who realizes the Shabad does not act in egotism. ||8||8||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪੇ ਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ ॥੮॥੮॥

ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਧਨ ਸੀਗਾਰੀਐ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਬਾਦਿ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥
bin pir dhan seegaareeai joban baad khuaar |
Without her Husband, the soul-bride's youth and ornaments are useless and wretched.
(ਜੇ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਗਹਿਣਿਆਂ ਆਦਿਕ ਨਾਲ) ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸਜਾ ਲਏ, ਪਰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਤੀ ਨਾਹ ਮਿਲੇ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜੁਆਨੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾ ਮਾਣੇ ਸੁਖਿ ਸੇਜੜੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਬਾਦਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥
naa maane sukh sejarree bin pir baad seegaar |
She does not enjoy the pleasure of His Bed without her Husband, her ornaments are absurd.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਾ ਭੀ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਾਲ ਪਤੀ ਦੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਸੇਜ ਮਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ, ਪਤੀ-ਮਿਲਾਪ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੂਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਦੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਨਾ ਘਰਿ ਸੇਜ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
dookh ghano dohaaganee naa ghar sej bhataar |1|
The discarded bride suffers terrible pain her Husband does not come to the bed of her home. ||1||
ਉਸ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁਖ ਵਿਆਪਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਸੇਜ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਖਸਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ (ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਬਾਹਰ-ਮੁਖੀ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਉੱਦਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਸੇਜ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਗਟ ਨਾਹ ਹੋਵੇ) ॥੧॥
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਜਪਹੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

O mind, meditate on the Lord, and find peace.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ, (ਤੈਨੂੰ) ਸੁਖ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਰੰਗੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Without the Guru, love is not found. United with the Shabad, happiness is found. ||1||Pause||
(ਪਰ ਮਨ ਭੀ ਕੀਹ ਕਰੇ? ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਹ ਹੋਵੇ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਯਾਦ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਏ? ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ) ਪਿਆਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ। ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਰੰਗ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥

Serving the Guru, she finds peace, and her Husband Lord adorns her with intuitive wisdom.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਉਸੇ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਅਡੋਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜ ਕੇ) ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੰਗਾਰਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਸਚਿ ਮਾਣੇ ਪਿਰ ਸੇਜੜੀ ਗੂੜਾ ਹੇਤੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

Truly, she enjoys the Bed of her Husband, through her deep love and affection.
ਉਹੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਸੇਜ ਮਾਣ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ), ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਗੂੜ੍ਹਾ ਹਿਤ ਹੈ ਗੂੜ੍ਹਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਣਿ ਸਿਞਾਣੀਐ ਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੀ ਗੁਣ ਚਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
guramukh jaan siyaaneeai gur melee gun chaar |2|
As Gurmukh, she comes to know Him. Meeting with the Guru, she maintains a virtuous lifestyle. ||2||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਸਿੰਞਾਣਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਇਹ ਸਿੰਞਾਣ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਸਾਡਾ ਹੈ), ਉਹ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਹੈ) ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਸਚਿ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਵਰ ਕਾਮਣੀ ਪਿਰਿ ਮੋਹੀ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
sach milahu var kaamanee pir mohee rang laae |
Through Truth, meet your Husband Lord, O soul-bride. Enchanted by your Husband, enshrine love for Him.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦੀ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ! ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ) ਵਿਚ (ਸਦਾ) ਮਿਲੀ ਰਹੁ। ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ (ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦਾ) ਰੰਗ ਚਾੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਵਲ ਖਿੱਚ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਵਿਗਸਿਆ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
man tan saach vigasiaa keemat kehan na jaae |
Your mind and body shall blossom forth in Truth. The value of this cannot be described.
ਉਸਦਾ ਮਨ ਉਸਦਾ ਤਨ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਖਿੜ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ (ਉਸਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਇਤਨਾ ਅਮੋਲਕ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਹਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਘਰਿ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੩॥
har var ghar sohaaganee niramal saachai naae |3|
The soul-bride finds her Husband Lord in the home of her own being she is purified by the True Name. ||3||
ਉਹ ਸੁਹਾਗ ਭਾਗ ਵਾਲੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜ ਕੇ) ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਆਤਮਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ (ਹਿਰਦੇ) ਘਰ ਵਿਚ (ਹੀ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ) ॥੩॥
ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਮਨੂਆ ਜੇ ਮਰੈ ਤਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੈ ਨਾਰਿ ॥
man meh manooaa je marai taa pir raavai naar |
If the mind within the mind dies, then the Husband ravishes and enjoys His bride.
ਜੇ (ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ) ਥੋੜ੍ਹ-ਵਿਤਾ ਮਨ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਥੋੜ੍ਹ-ਵਿਤੇ ਸੁਭਾਅ ਵਲੋਂ) ਮਰ ਜਾਏ, ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਤੀ ਉਸ ਜੀਵ-ਨਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਕਤੁ ਤਾਗੈ ਰਲਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਗਲਿ ਮੋਤੀਅਨ ਕਾ ਹਾਰੁ ॥

They are woven into one texture, like pearls on a necklace around the neck.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਇਕੋ ਧਾਗੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੋਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਮੋਤੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਹਾਰ ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਪਾ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜੇ (ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੀ) ਇਕੋ ਸੁਰਤ ਧਾਗੇ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਮਿਕ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥੪॥
sant sabhaa sukh aoopajai guramukh naam adhaar |4|
In the Society of the Saints, peace wells up the Gurmukhs take the Support of the Naam. ||4||
ਪਰ ਇਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਮਨ ਨੂੰ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਖਿਨਿ ਖਪੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਆਵੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
khin meh upajai khin khapai khin aavai khin jaae |
In an instant, one is born, and in an instant, one dies. In an instant one comes, and in an instant one goes.
(ਜੇ ਮਨ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆ ਰਹੇ, ਤਾਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੇ ਲਾਭ ਨਾਲ) ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਇਉਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਜਿਊ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੀ ਘਾਟ ਨਾਲ) ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਕ ਖਿਨ (ਗੁਜ਼ਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ) ਉਹ ਜੰਮ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਕ ਖਿਨ (ਗੁਜ਼ਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ) ਉਹ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਸਹਾਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਜੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਆਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹ, ਜੇ ਜਾਏ ਤਾਂ ਸਹਮ)।
ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਰਵਿ ਰਹੈ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਇ ॥
sabad pachhaanai rav rahai naa tis kaal santaae |
One who recognizes the Shabad merges into it, and is not afflicted by death.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਤ (ਦਾ ਡਰ) ਸਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
