ਇਹ ਸ੍ਰਪਨੀ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ॥

This she-serpent is created by Him.
ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, (ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਰਚਿਆ ਹੈ
ਬਲੁ ਅਬਲੁ ਕਿਆ ਇਸ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥

What power or weakness does she have by herself? ||4||
ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਇਸ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਸ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿ ਕਿਸੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਪਾ ਸਕੇ ਜਾਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਤੋਂ ਹਾਰ ਖਾ ਜਾਏ ॥੪॥
ਇਹ ਬਸਤੀ ਤਾ ਬਸਤ ਸਰੀਰਾ ॥

If she abides with the mortal, then his soul abides in his body.
ਜਿਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਦ ਤਕ ਜੀਵ ਸਰੀਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਨਮ-ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਚੱਕਰ ਵਿਚ) ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਕਬੀਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਅਡੋਲ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ (ਜਨਮ-ਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਘੁੰਮਣ-ਘੇਰੀ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਲੰਘ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੫॥੬॥੧੯॥

(ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਕੁੱਤੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਸੁਣਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਲਾਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ,
ਕਹਾ ਸਾਕਤ ਪਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਏ ॥੧॥

Why bother to sing the Lord's Praises to the faithless cynic? ||1||
ਤਿਵੇਂ ਸਾਕਤ ਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਿਆਂ ਸਾਕਤ ਉੱਤੇ ਅਸਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ ॥੧॥
ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਰਮੇ ਰਮਿ ਰਹੀਐ ॥

Remain absorbed in the Lord's Name, Raam, Raam, Raam.
(ਆਪ ਹੀ) ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਕਤ ਸਿਉ ਭੂਲਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਹੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saakat siau bhool nahee kaheeai |1| rahaau |
Do not bother to speak of it to the faithless cynic, even by mistake. ||1||Pause||
ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਸਾਕਤ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਕਊਆ ਕਹਾ ਕਪੂਰ ਚਰਾਏ ॥

Why offer camphor to a crow?
ਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਸ਼ਕ-ਕਾਫ਼ੂਰ ਖੁਆਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਗੰਦ ਖਾਣ ਦੀ ਆਦਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ)
ਕਹ ਬਿਸੀਅਰ ਕਉ ਦੂਧੁ ਪੀਆਏ ॥੨॥

Why give the snake milk to drink? ||2||
(ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਸੱਪ ਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਧ ਪਿਲਾਉਣ ਨਾਲ ਭੀ ਕੋਈ ਫ਼ਾਇਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ (ਉਹ ਡੰਗ ਮਾਰਨੋਂ ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਟਲੇਗਾ) ॥੨॥
ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਬੁਧਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
satasangat mil bibek budh hoee |
Joining the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, discriminating understanding is attained.
ਇਹ ਚੰਗੇ-ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਦੀ ਪਰਖ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਅਕਲ ਸਾਧ-ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਪਾਰਸੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਲੋਹਾ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਸੋਈ ॥੩॥
paaras paras lohaa kanchan soee |3|
That iron which touches the Philosopher's Stone becomes gold. ||3||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਾਰਸ ਨੂੰ ਛੋਹ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਲੋਹਾ ਭੀ ਸੋਨਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਸਾਕਤੁ ਸੁਆਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਇਆ ॥
saakat suaan sabh kare karaaeaa |
The dog, the faithless cynic, does everything as the Lord causes him to do.
ਕੁੱਤਾ ਤੇ ਸਾਕਤ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰੇਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
jo dhur likhiaa su karam kamaaeaa |4|
He does the deeds pre-ordained from the very beginning. ||4||
ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ-ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੋ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਬਣ ਚੁਕੇ ਹਨ) ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਹੁਣ ਕਰੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਨੀਮੁ ਸਿੰਚਾਈ ॥
amrit lai lai neem sinchaaee |
If you take Ambrosial Nectar and irrigate the neem tree with it,
ਕਬੀਰ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ-ਜੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਿਠਾਸ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਲ) ਲੈ ਕੇ ਨਿੰਮ ਦੇ ਬੂਟੇ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਸਿੰਜਦੇ ਰਹੀਏ,
ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਉਆ ਕੋ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੫॥੭॥੨੦॥
kehat kabeer uaa ko sehaj na jaaee |5|7|20|
still, says Kabeer, its natural qualities are not changed. ||5||7||20||
ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਬੂਟੇ ਦਾ ਜਮਾਂਦਰੂ (ਕੁੜਿੱਤਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਸੁਭਾਉ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੫॥੭॥੨੦॥

A fortress like that of Sri Lanka, with the ocean as a moat around it
ਜਿਸ ਰਾਵਣ ਦਾ ਲੰਕਾ ਵਰਗਾ ਕਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਸੀ, ਤੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਰਗੀ (ਉਸ ਕਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਦੀ ਰਾਖੀ ਲਈ) ਖਾਈ ਸੀ,
ਤਿਹ ਰਾਵਨ ਘਰ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥
tih raavan ghar khabar na paaee |1|
- there is no news about that house of Raavan. ||1||
ਉਸ ਰਾਵਣ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਦਾ ਅੱਜ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ॥੧॥
ਕਿਆ ਮਾਗਉ ਕਿਛੁ ਥਿਰੁ ਨ ਰਹਾਈ ॥
kiaa maagau kichh thir na rahaaee |
What shall I ask for? Nothing is permanent.
ਮੈਂ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀ) ਕਿਹੜੀ ਸ਼ੈ ਮੰਗਾਂ? ਕੋਈ ਸ਼ੈ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ
ਦੇਖਤ ਨੈਨ ਚਲਿਓ ਜਗੁ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
dekhat nain chalio jag jaaee |1| rahaau |
I see with my eyes that the world is passing away. ||1||Pause||
ਮੇਰੇ ਅੱਖੀਂ ਵੇਂਹਦਿਆਂ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਤੁਰਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਇਕੁ ਲਖੁ ਪੂਤ ਸਵਾ ਲਖੁ ਨਾਤੀ ॥
eik lakh poot savaa lakh naatee |
Thousands of sons and thousands of grandsons
ਜਿਸ ਰਾਵਣ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਲੱਖ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਤੇ ਸਵਾ ਲੱਖ ਪੋਤਰੇ (ਦੱਸੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ),
ਤਿਹ ਰਾਵਨ ਘਰ ਦੀਆ ਨ ਬਾਤੀ ॥੨॥
tih raavan ghar deea na baatee |2|
- but in that house of Raavan, the lamps and wicks have gone out. ||2||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਹਿਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਤੇ ਦੀਵਾ-ਵੱਟੀ ਜਗਦਾ ਨਾਹ ਰਿਹਾ ॥੨॥
ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਤਪਤ ਰਸੋਈ ॥
chand sooraj jaa ke tapat rasoee |
The moon and the sun cooked his food.
(ਇਹ ਉਸ ਰਾਵਣ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਹੈ) ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਰਸੋਈ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਤੇ ਸੂਰਜ ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ,
ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਕਪਰੇ ਧੋਈ ॥੩॥
baisantar jaa ke kapare dhoee |3|
The fire washed his clothes. ||3||
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਬੈਸੰਤਰ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਧੋਂਦਾ ਸੀ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਰਾਵਣ ਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਪੋਤਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਰੋਟੀ ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਦਿਨੇ ਰਾਤ ਰਸੋਈ ਤਪਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਸਾਫ਼ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਅੱਗ ਦੀਆਂ ਭੱਠੀਆਂ ਚੜ੍ਹੀਆਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ) ॥੩॥
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਾਮੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਬਸਾਈ ॥
guramat raamai naam basaaee |
Under Guru's Instructions, one whose mind is filled with the Lord's Name,
(ਸੋ) ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਸ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਜਗਤ ਵਲੋਂ ਹਟਾ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਕਤਹੂੰ ਜਾਈ ॥੪॥
asathir rahai na katahoon jaaee |4|
becomes permanent, and does not go anywhere. ||4||
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਅਡੋਲ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਜਗਤ-ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਭਟਕਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਲੋਈ ॥
kehat kabeer sunahu re loee |
Says Kabeer, listen, people:
ਕਬੀਰ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ-ਸੁਣੋ, ਹੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਲੋਕੋ!
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੫॥੮॥੨੧॥
raam naam bin mukat na hoee |5|8|21|
without the Lord's Name, no one is liberated. ||5||8||21||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ) ॥੫॥੮॥੨੧॥

ਪਹਿਲਾ ਪੂਤੁ ਪਿਛੈਰੀ ਮਾਈ ॥

First, the son was born, and then, his mother.
ਇਹ ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ ਤਾਂ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਅੰਸ) ਸੀ, ਪਰ ਇਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਪੈ ਗਿਆ,
ਗੁਰੁ ਲਾਗੋ ਚੇਲੇ ਕੀ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥

The guru falls at the feet of the disciple. ||1||
ਤੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਅਸਲੇ ਵਾਲਾ ਜੀਵ (ਆਪਣੇ ਹੀ ਬਣਾਏ ਹੋਏ) ਮਨ ਚੇਲੇ ਦੀ ਪੈਰੀਂ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ) ॥੧॥
ਏਕੁ ਅਚੰਭਉ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਤੁਮੑ ਭਾਈ ॥
ek achanbhau sunahu tuma bhaaee |
Listen to this wonderful thing, O Siblings of Destiny!
ਸੁਣੋ ਇਕ ਅਚਰਜ ਖੇਡ (ਜੋ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਵਰਤ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।)
ਦੇਖਤ ਸਿੰਘੁ ਚਰਾਵਤ ਗਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

I saw the lion herding the cows. ||1||Pause||
ਸਾਡੇ ਵੇਖਦਿਆਂ ਇਹ ਨਿਡਰ ਅਸਲੇ ਵਾਲਾ ਜੀਵ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਸ਼ੇਰ ਗਾਈਆਂ ਚਾਰਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਲ ਕੀ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਤਰਵਰਿ ਬਿਆਈ ॥
jal kee machhulee taravar biaaee |
The fish of the water gives birth upon a tree.
ਸਤਸੰਗ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਜੀਊਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਸੰਸਾਰਕ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੱਝ ਗਈ ਹੈ,
ਦੇਖਤ ਕੁਤਰਾ ਲੈ ਗਈ ਬਿਲਾਈ ॥੨॥
dekhat kutaraa lai gee bilaaee |2|
I saw a cat carrying away a dog. ||2||
ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ-ਬਿੱਲੀ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਡੇ ਵੇਖਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਫੜ ਲੈ ਗਈ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਤਲੈ ਰੇ ਬੈਸਾ ਊਪਰਿ ਸੂਲਾ ॥
talai re baisaa aoopar soolaa |
The branches are below, and the roots are above.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਇਸ ਜੀਵ ਨੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਕ ਪਸਾਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਅਸਲੀ ਮੂਲ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਕੱਢ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਪੇਡਿ ਲਗੇ ਫਲ ਫੂਲਾ ॥੩॥
tis kai pedd lage fal foolaa |3|
The trunk of that tree bears fruits and flowers. ||3||
ਹੁਣ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ (ਜੀਵ-ਰੁੱਖ) ਦੇ ਪੇੜ ਨੂੰ ਫੁੱਲ ਫਲ ਭੀ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਹੀ ਵਾਸਨਾ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਲੱਗ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਘੋਰੈ ਚਰਿ ਭੈਸ ਚਰਾਵਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
ghorai char bhais charaavan jaaee |
Riding a horse, the buffalo takes him out to graze.
(ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਪੈਣ ਕਰਕੇ) ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ-ਭੈਂਸ ਮਨ-ਘੋੜੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਸਵਾਰ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਭੋਗਣ ਲਈ ਭਜਾਈ ਫਿਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਬੈਲੁ ਗੋਨਿ ਘਰਿ ਆਈ ॥੪॥
baahar bail gon ghar aaee |4|
The bull is away, while his load has come home. ||4||
(ਹੁਣ ਹਾਲਤ ਇਹ ਬਣ ਗਈ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਧੀਰਜ-ਰੂਪ ਬਲਦ ਬਾਹਰ ਨਿਕਲ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਧੀਰਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਗਈ), ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਛੱਟ ਜੀਵ ਉੱਤੇ ਆ ਪਈ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੁ ਇਸ ਪਦ ਬੂਝੈ ॥
kehat kabeer ju is pad boojhai |
Says Kabeer, one who understands this hymn,
ਕਬੀਰ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ-ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ (ਵਾਪਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ) ਹਾਲਤ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਰਾਮ ਰਮਤ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ॥੫॥੯॥੨੨॥
raam ramat tis sabh kichh soojhai |5|9|22|

ਰਾਗ ਆਸਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਗਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਤਿੰਨ-ਬੰਦਾਂ-ਇਕ/ਦੋ-ਤੁਕਿਆਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਾਣੀ।

ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿੰਦੁ ਤੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਕੀਆ ਅਗਨਿ ਕੁੰਡ ਰਹਾਇਆ ॥

The Lord created the body from sperm, and protected it in the fire pit.
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ (ਪਿਤਾ ਦੀ) ਇਕ ਬੂੰਦ ਤੋਂ (ਤੇਰਾ) ਸਰੀਰ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਤੇ (ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਦੀ) ਅੱਗ ਦੇ ਕੁੰਡ ਵਿਚ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਬਚਾਈ ਰੱਖਿਆ,
ਦਸ ਮਾਸ ਮਾਤਾ ਉਦਰਿ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਲਾਗੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
das maas maataa udar raakhiaa bahur laagee maaeaa |1|
For ten months He preserved you in your mother's womb, and then, after you were born, you became attached to Maya. ||1||
ਦਸ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਾਖੀ ਕੀਤੀ, (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜਨਮ ਲੈਣ ਤੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੇ ਆ ਦਬਾਇਆ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਕਾਹੇ ਕਉ ਲੋਭਿ ਲਾਗੇ ਰਤਨ ਜਨਮੁ ਖੋਇਆ ॥
praanee kaahe kau lobh laage ratan janam khoeaa |
O mortal, why have you attached yourself to greed, and lost the jewel of life?
ਹੇ ਬੰਦੇ! ਕਿਉਂ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਹੀਰਾ-ਜਨਮ ਗਵਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ?
ਪੂਰਬ ਜਨਮਿ ਕਰਮ ਭੂਮਿ ਬੀਜੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਬੋਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
poorab janam karam bhoom beej naahee boeaa |1| rahaau |
You did not plant the seeds of good actions in the earth of your past lives. ||1||Pause||
ਪਿਛਲੇ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਚ (ਕੀਤੇ) ਕਰਮਾਂ-ਅਨੁਸਾਰ (ਮਿਲੇ ਇਸ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ-) ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਉਂ ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ ਬੀਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਬੀਜਦਾ? ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਬਾਰਿਕ ਤੇ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਭਇਆ ਹੋਨਾ ਸੋ ਹੋਇਆ ॥
baarik te biradh bheaa honaa so hoeaa |
From an infant, you have grown old. That which was to happen, has happened.
ਹੁਣ ਤੂੰ ਬਾਲਕ ਤੋਂ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈਂ, ਪਿਛਲਾ ਬੀਤਿਆ ਸਮਾ ਹੱਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਣਾ।
ਜਾ ਜਮੁ ਆਇ ਝੋਟ ਪਕਰੈ ਤਬਹਿ ਕਾਹੇ ਰੋਇਆ ॥੨॥
jaa jam aae jhott pakarai tabeh kaahe roeaa |2|
When the Messenger of Death comes and grabs you by your hair, why do you cry out then? ||2||
ਜਿਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਜਮ ਸਿਰੋਂ ਆ ਫੜੇਗਾ, ਤਦੋਂ ਰੋਣ ਦਾ ਕੀਹ ਲਾਭ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ? ॥੨॥
