ਹੁਕਮੀ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਇ ਦਰਗਹ ਭਾਣੀਐ ॥
hukamee paidhaa jaae daragah bhaaneeai |
If it pleases the Commander, one goes to His Court, robed in honor.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ) ਜੀਵ ਇਥੋਂ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਖੱਟ ਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਆਦਰ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਹੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰ ਬੰਦਿ ਰਬਾਣੀਐ ॥੫॥
hukame hee sir maar band rabaaneeai |5|
By His Command, God's slaves are hit over the head. ||5||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਣ ਕਰਕੇ) ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਮਾਰ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੀ) ਰੱਬੀ ਕੈਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੫॥
ਲਾਹਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਿਆਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਾਈਐ ॥
laahaa sach niaau man vasaaeeai |
The profit is earned by enshrining Truth and justice in the mind.
ਜੇ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਲਈਏ ਕਿ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਵਰਤ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਲਾਭ ਖੱਟ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ਗਰਬੁ ਵਞਾਈਐ ॥੬॥
likhiaa palai paae garab vayaaeeai |6|
They obtain what is written in their destiny, and overcome pride. ||6||
ਮਾਣ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ) ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਮਨਮੁਖੀਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰ ਵਾਦਿ ਖਪਾਈਐ ॥
manamukheea sir maar vaad khapaaeeai |
The self-willed manmukhs are hit over the head, and consumed by conflict.
ਜੇਹੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ (ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਦੀ) ਮਾਰ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ) ਝਗੜੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਠਗਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਬੰਨਿੑ ਚਲਾਈਐ ॥੭॥
tthag mutthee koorriaar bana chalaaeeai |7|
The cheaters are plundered by falsehood they are chained and led away. ||7||
ਕੂੜ ਦੀ ਵਪਾਰਨ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ) ਠੱਗੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਲੁੱਟੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੀ ਇਥੋਂ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਲ ਤੋਰੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ) ॥੭॥
ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਇ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਹੀ ॥
saahib ridai vasaae na pachhotaavahee |
Enshrine the Lord Master in your mind, and you shall not have to repent.
ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ, (ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ) ਪਛੁਤਾਉਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਏਗਾ।
ਗੁਨਹਾਂ ਬਖਸਣਹਾਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਵਹੀ ॥੮॥
gunahaan bakhasanahaar sabad kamaavahee |8|
He forgives our sins, when we practice the Teachings of the Guru's Word. ||8||
ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ, ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਗੁਨਾਹ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੰਗੈ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਘਾਲੀਐ ॥

Nanak begs for the True Name, which is obtained by the Gurmukh.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਤੇਰੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਘਾਲ-ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਾਂ।
ਮੈ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੀਐ ॥੯॥੧੬॥
mai tujh bin avar na koe nadar nihaaleeai |9|16|
Without You, I have no other at all please, bless me with Your Glance of Grace. ||9||16||
ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਆਸਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰੇ ਵਲ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖ ॥੯॥੧੬॥

ਕਿਆ ਜੰਗਲੁ ਢੂਢੀ ਜਾਇ ਮੈ ਘਰਿ ਬਨੁ ਹਰੀਆਵਲਾ ॥
kiaa jangal dtoodtee jaae mai ghar ban hareeaavalaa |
Why should I go searching in the forests, when the woods of my home are so green?
ਜੰਗਲ ਨੂੰ ਢੰਡਣ ਦੀ ਕੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ? ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਦਿੱਸ ਪਏ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹਰੀਆਵਲਾ ਜੰਗਲ ਹੈ।
ਸਚਿ ਟਿਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇ ਸਬਦਿ ਉਤਾਵਲਾ ॥੧॥
sach ttikai ghar aae sabad utaavalaa |1|
The True Word of the Shabad has instantaneously come and settled in my heart. ||1||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੁਰਤ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਸੋਇ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
jeh dekhaa teh soe avar na jaaneeai |
Wherever I look, there He is I know no other.
ਮੈਂ ਜਿਧਰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਧਰ ਉਹ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਹੀ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur kee kaar kamaae mehal pachhaaneeai |1| rahaau |
Working for the Guru, one realizes the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾ ਕੇ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਟਿਕਾਣਾ (ਨਿਵਾਸ) ਪਛਾਣ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ਸਚੁ ਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਈ ॥
aap milaavai sach taa man bhaavee |
The True Lord blends us with Himself, when it is pleasing to His Mind.
ਜਦੋਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ (ਕਿਸੇ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਚਲੈ ਸਦਾ ਰਜਾਇ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਵਈ ॥੨॥
chalai sadaa rajaae ank samaavee |2|
One who ever walks in accordance with His Will, merges into His Being. ||2||
ਉਹ ਜੀਵ ਸਦਾ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਗੋਦ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
sachaa saahib man vasai vasiaa man soee |
When the True Lord dwells in the mind, that mind flourishes.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਮਾਲਕ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਉਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਆਪੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਦੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੩॥
aape de vaddiaaeea de tott na hoee |3|
He Himself grants greatness His Gifts are never exhausted. ||3||
(ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਵਡਿਆਈਆਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਵਿਚ ਇਤਨੀਆਂ ਵਡਿਆਈਆਂ ਹਨ ਕਿ) ਦੇਂਦਿਆਂ ਉਹ ਘਟਦੀਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੩॥
ਅਬੇ ਤਬੇ ਕੀ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਕਿਉ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
abe tabe kee chaakaree kiau daragah paavai |
Serving this and that person, how can one obtain the Lord's Court?
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਣੀ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਧਿਰ ਧਿਰ ਦੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਾਮਦ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਪਥਰ ਕੀ ਬੇੜੀ ਜੇ ਚੜੈ ਭਰ ਨਾਲਿ ਬੁਡਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
pathar kee berree je charrai bhar naal buddaavai |4|
If someone embarks on a boat of stone, he shall drown with its cargo. ||4||
(ਧਿਰ ਧਿਰ ਦੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਾਮਦ ਕਰਨਾ ਇਉਂ ਹੈ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪੱਥਰ ਦੀ ਬੇੜੀ ਵਿਚ ਸਵਾਰ ਹੋਣਾ, ਤੇ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ) ਪੱਥਰ ਦੀ ਬੇੜੀ ਵਿਚ ਸਵਾਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-) ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਆਪਨੜਾ ਮਨੁ ਵੇਚੀਐ ਸਿਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਨਾਲੇ ॥
aapanarraa man vecheeai sir deejai naale |
So offer your mind, and surrender your head with it.
ਜੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ (ਗੁਰੂ ਅੱਗੇ) ਵੇਚ ਦੇਈਏ, ਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਿਰ ਭੀ ਦੇਈਏ (ਭਾਵ, ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਤੇ ਤੁਰੀਏ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਅਕਲ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਭੀ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਈਏ),
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਅਪਨਾ ਘਰੁ ਭਾਲੇ ॥੫॥
guramukh vasat pachhaaneeai apanaa ghar bhaale |5|
The Gurmukh realizes the true essence, and finds the home of his own self. ||5||
ਤਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ-ਘਰ ਭਾਲ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ) ਨਾਮ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਤਿਨਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਕੀਆ ॥
jaman maranaa aakheeai tin karatai keea |
People discuss birth and death the Creator created this.
ਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਮਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਥੀਆ ॥੬॥
aap gavaaeaa mar rahe fir maran na theea |6|
Those who conquer their selfhood and remain dead, shall never have to die again. ||6||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਜੀਵ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਲੋਂ) ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਆਪਦਾ ॥੬॥
ਸਾਈ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਧੁਰ ਕੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਈ ॥
saaee kaar kamaavanee dhur kee furamaaee |
Do those deeds which the Primal Lord has ordered for you.
ਧੁਰੋਂ ਹੀ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਜੇਹੜੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੀਵ ਉਹੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜੇ ਮਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਕਿਨਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੭॥
je man satigur de milai kin keemat paaee |7|
If one surrenders his mind upon meeting the True Guru, who can estimate its value? ||7||
ਪਰ ਜੇ ਜੀਵ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਏ (ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਇਤਨਾ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੭॥
ਰਤਨਾ ਪਾਰਖੁ ਸੋ ਧਣੀ ਤਿਨਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
ratanaa paarakh so dhanee tin keemat paaee |
That Lord Master is the Assayer of the jewel of the mind He places the value on it.
ਉਹ ਮਾਲਕ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ (ਆਪ ਦੇ ਬਣਾਏ ਹੋਏ) ਰਤਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਰਖ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਪਰਖ ਪਰਖ ਕੇ) ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੮॥੧੭॥
naanak saahib man vasai sachee vaddiaaee |8|17|
O Nanak, True is the Glory of that one, in whose mind the Lord Master dwells. ||8||17||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਇਜ਼ਤ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੧੭॥

Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਜਿਨੑੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥
jinaee naam visaariaa doojai bharam bhulaaee |
Those who have forgotten the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are deluded by doubt and duality.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਹੋਰ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ) ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਮੂਲੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਡਾਲੀ ਲਗੇ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਛਾਈ ॥੧॥
mool chhodd ddaalee lage kiaa paaveh chhaaee |1|
Those who abandon the roots and cling to the branches, shall obtain only ashes. ||1||
ਉਹ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਰੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਮੂਲ (-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਰੁੱਖ ਦੀਆਂ) ਡਾਲੀਆਂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਸਾਰੇ) ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗ ਗਏ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ ॥੧॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਜੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
bin naavai kiau chhootteeai je jaanai koee |
Without the Name, how can one be emancipated? Who knows this?
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਮਝ ਲਏ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ (ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੀਦਾ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
guramukh hoe ta chhootteeai manamukh pat khoee |1| rahaau |
One who becomes Gurmukh is emancipated the self-willed manmukhs lose their honor. ||1||Pause||
ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਮਾਇਆ-ਮੋਹ-ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ) ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਜ਼ਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਿਨੑੀ ਏਕੋ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਭਾਈ ॥
jinaee eko seviaa pooree mat bhaaee |
Those who serve the One Lord become perfect in their understanding, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੀਤਾ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਅਕਲ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਉਕਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦੀ।
ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਾ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੨॥
aad jugaad niranjanaa jan har saranaaee |2|
The Lord's humble servant finds Sanctuary in Him, the Immaculate One, from the very beginning, and throughout the ages. ||2||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਉਹ ਸੇਵਕ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਸਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਜੁਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੨॥
ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਈ ॥
saahib meraa ek hai avar nahee bhaaee |
My Lord and Master is the One there is no other, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਾਡਾ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਬੇ-ਮਿਸਾਲ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਾਚੇ ਪਰਥਾਈ ॥੩॥
kirapaa te sukh paaeaa saache parathaaee |3|
By the Grace of the True Lord, celestial peace is obtained. ||3||
ਜੇ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ-ਪਰਨੇ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹੀਏ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਕੇਤੀ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਏ ॥
gur bin kinai na paaeo ketee kahai kahaae |
Without the Guru, no one has obtained Him, although many may claim to have done so.
ਬਥੇਰੀ ਲੋਕਾਈ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਰਸਤੇ ਦੱਸਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਆਪਿ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਵਾਟੜੀਂ ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥੪॥
aap dikhaavai vaattarreen sachee bhagat drirraae |4|
He Himself reveals the Way, and implants true devotion within. ||4||
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ) ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਵਿਖਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਪੱਕੀ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਜੇ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਭੀ ਉਝੜਿ ਜਾਏ ॥
manamukh je samajhaaeeai bhee ujharr jaae |
Even if the self-willed manmukh is instructed, he stills goes into the wilderness.
ਪਰ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜੇ (ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ) ਸਮਝਾਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਭੀ ਕਰੀਏ, ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਉਹ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨ ਛੂਟਸੀ ਮਰਿ ਨਰਕ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੫॥
bin har naam na chhoottasee mar narak samaae |5|
Without the Lord's Name, he shall not be emancipated he shall die, and sink into hell. ||5||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹ ਇਸ (ਕੁਰਾਹ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ, (ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ) ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਮਾਨੋ,) ਨਰਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਭਰਮਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਲੇਵੈ ॥
janam marai bharamaaeeai har naam na levai |
He wanders through birth and death, and never chants the Lord's Name.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਉਹ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵੈ ॥੬॥
taa kee keemat naa pavai bin gur kee sevai |6|
He never realizes his own value, without serving the Guru. ||6||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦੀ ॥੬॥
