ਕੰਚਨ ਕਾਇਆ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਨੂਪੁ ॥
kanchan kaaeaa jot anoop |
His body becomes golden, by the Lord's Incomparable Light.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਸੁੱਧ) ਸੋਨੇ ਵਰਗੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹਸਤੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਨਿਰਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਹੀ ਚਾਨਣ ਹੈ,
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਦੇਵਾ ਸਗਲ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥
tribhavan devaa sagal saroop |
He beholds the divine beauty in all the three worlds.
ਜਿਸ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ,
ਮੈ ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਅਖੂਟੁ ॥੪॥
mai so dhan palai saach akhoott |4|
That inexhaustible wealth of Truth is now in my lap. ||4||
ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਆਕਾਰ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ (ਸਰਗੁਣ) ਸਰੂਪ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਨਾਹ ਮੁੱਕਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਗੁਰੂ-ਸਰਾਫ਼ ਤੋਂ) ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਪੰਚ ਤੀਨਿ ਨਵ ਚਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
panch teen nav chaar samaavai |
In the five elements, the three worlds, the nine regions and the four directions, the Lord is pervading.
ਜੋ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਤੱਤਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਨੌ ਖੰਡਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਅਤੇ ਚਾਰ ਕੂਟਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ,
ਧਰਣਿ ਗਗਨੁ ਕਲ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਹਾਵੈ ॥
dharan gagan kal dhaar rahaavai |
He supports the earth and the sky, exercising His almighty power.
ਜੋ ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੱਤਿਆ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ (ਥਾਂ ਸਿਰ) ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਾਤਉ ਉਲਟਿ ਪਰਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
baahar jaatau ulatt paraavai |5|
He turns the outgoing mind around. ||5||
ਗੁਰੂ-ਸਰਾਫ਼ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਆਕਾਰ ਵਲ ਦੌੜਦੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਲ ਪਰਤਾ ਕੇ ਲਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਆਖੀ ਸੂਝੈ ॥
moorakh hoe na aakhee soojhai |
The fool does not realize what he sees with his eyes.
(ਗੁਰੂ-ਸਰਾਫ਼ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਰਮਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਪਰ) ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ,
ਜਿਹਵਾ ਰਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਕਹਿਆ ਬੂਝੈ ॥
jihavaa ras nahee kahiaa boojhai |
He does not taste with his tongue, and does not understand what is said.
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਵਿਚ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਇਆ, ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ।
ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਜਗ ਸਿਉ ਲੂਝੈ ॥੬॥
bikh kaa maataa jag siau loojhai |6|
Intoxicated with poison, he argues with the world. ||6||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਿਹੁਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਜਗਤ ਨਾਲ ਝਗੜੇ ਸਹੇੜਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਊਤਮ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਊਤਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
aootam sangat aootam hovai |
In the uplifting society, one is uplifted.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਣ ਕਉ ਧਾਵੈ ਅਵਗਣ ਧੋਵੈ ॥
gun kau dhaavai avagan dhovai |
He chases after virtue and washes off his sins.
ਆਤਮਕ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਲਈ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਨਾਲ) ਔਗੁਣ ਧੋ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥੭॥
bin gur seve sehaj na hovai |7|
Without serving the Guru, celestial poise is not obtained. ||7||
(ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਯਕੀਨੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਔਗੁਣਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਤੇ) ਅਡੋਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ ॥੭॥
ਹੀਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਲਾਲੁ ॥
heeraa naam javehar laal |
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is a diamond, a jewel, a ruby.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਮ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਹੀਰੇ ਤੇ ਲਾਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਹੈ,
ਮਨੁ ਮੋਤੀ ਹੈ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਮਾਲੁ ॥
man motee hai tis kaa maal |
The pearl of the mind is the inner wealth.
ਜੋ ਮੋਤੀ (ਵਰਗੇ ਸੁੱਚਾ) ਮਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਰਾਸਿ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਰਖੈ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ॥੮॥੫॥
naanak parakhai nadar nihaal |8|5|
O Nanak, the Lord tests us, and blesses us with His Glance of Grace. ||8||5||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ-ਸਰਾਫ਼ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਨਿਹਾਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੫॥

ਰਾਗ ਆਸਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
guramukh giaan dhiaan man maan |
The Gurmukh obtains spiritual wisdom, meditation and satisfaction of the mind.
(ਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ! ਤੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ (ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ) ਮਾਣ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਹਲੀ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਛਾਨੁ ॥
guramukh mahalee mehal pachhaan |
The Gurmukh realizes the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਪਛਾਣ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਨੀਸਾਨੁ ॥੧॥
guramukh surat sabad neesaan |1|
The Gurmukh is attuned to the Word of the Shabad, as his Insignia. ||1||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੋਚ-ਮੰਡਲ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ, (ਇਹ ਤੇਰੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਲਈ) ਰਾਹਦਾਰੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਐਸੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
aise prem bhagat veechaaree |
Such is the loving devotional worship of the Lord's contemplation.
ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਉੱਚੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

The Gurmukh realizes the True Name, the Destroyer of ego. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਥਾਨਿ ਸੁਥਾਨੁ ॥
ahinis niramal thaan suthaan |
Day and night, he remains immaculately pure, and abides in the sublime place.
(ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ) ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਡੇਰਾ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤੀਨ ਭਵਨ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
teen bhavan nihakeval giaan |
He gains the wisdom of the three worlds.
ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਤੇ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਨੁ ॥੨॥
saache gur te hukam pachhaan |2|
Through the True Guru, the Command of the Lord's Will is realized. ||2||
(ਤੂੰ ਭੀ) ਅਭੁੱਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ॥੨॥
ਸਾਚਾ ਹਰਖੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੋਗੁ ॥
saachaa harakh naahee tis sog |
He enjoys true pleasure, and suffers no pain.
(ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਅੰਦਰ ਟਿਕਵਾਂ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਕੋਈ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੋਂਹਦੀ
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਭੋਗੁ ॥
amrit giaan mahaa ras bhog |
He enjoys the ambrosial wisdom, and the highest sublime essence.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਰਸ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਭੋਜਨ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪੰਚ ਸਮਾਈ ਸੁਖੀ ਸਭੁ ਲੋਗੁ ॥੩॥
panch samaaee sukhee sabh log |3|
He overcomes the five evil passions, and becomes the happiest of all men. ||3||
(ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਜਗਤ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕਾ ਦੇਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ॥੩॥
ਸਗਲੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥
sagalee jot teraa sabh koee |
Your Divine Light is contained in all everyone belongs to You.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਉਂ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ: ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਜੋਤਿ (ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ), ਤੇ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਜੋੜਿ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਸੋਈ ॥
aape jorr vichhorre soee |
You Yourself join and separate again.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਜੋਗ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਫਿਰ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਪਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥
aape karataa kare su hoee |4|
Whatever the Creator does, comes to pass. ||4||
ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਢਾਹਿ ਉਸਾਰੇ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
dtaeh usaare hukam samaavai |
He demolishes, and He builds by His Order, he merges us into Himself.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਨੂੰ ਢਾਹ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮੁੜ ਉਸਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਮੁੜ ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹੁਕਮੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
hukamo varatai jo tis bhaavai |
Whatever is pleasing to His Will, happens.
ਜੋ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਚੱਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
gur bin pooraa koe na paavai |5|
Without the Guru, no one obtains the Perfect Lord. ||5||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ ਪੂਰਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੫॥
ਬਾਲਕ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਨ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਪਰਾਨਿ ॥
baalak biradh na surat paraan |
In childhood and old age, he does not understand.
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਬਚਪਨ ਜਾਂ ਬੁਢੇਪੇ ਵਿੱਚ (ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਜਵਾਨੀ ਸਮੇ) ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੁੜਦੀ,
ਭਰਿ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਬੂਡੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਿ ॥
bhar joban booddai abhimaan |
In the prime of youth, he is drowned in his pride.
(ਸਗੋਂ) ਭਰ-ਜਵਾਨੀ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ (ਜਵਾਨੀ ਦੇ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਲਹਸਿ ਨਿਦਾਨਿ ॥੬॥
bin naavai kiaa lehas nidaan |6|
Without the Name, what can the fool obtain? ||6||
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਆਖ਼ਰ (ਇਥੋਂ) ਕੀਹ ਖੱਟੇਗਾ? ॥੬॥
ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਅਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥
jis kaa an dhan sehaj na jaanaa |
He does not know the One who blesses him with nourishment and wealth.
ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅੰਨ ਤੇ ਧਨ ਜੀਵ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇ ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦਾ,
ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ ॥
bharam bhulaanaa fir pachhutaanaa |
Deluded by doubt, he later regrets and repents.
ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਪਛਤਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗਲਿ ਫਾਹੀ ਬਉਰਾ ਬਉਰਾਨਾ ॥੭॥
gal faahee bauraa bauraanaa |7|
The noose of death is around the neck of that crazy madman. ||7||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਪਈ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਝੱਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਬੂਡਤ ਜਗੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਤਉ ਡਰਿ ਭਾਗੇ ॥
booddat jag dekhiaa tau ddar bhaage |
I saw the world drowning, and I ran away in fear.
ਉਹ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ (ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਡੁੱਬਦਾ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ) ਡਰ ਕੇ ਭੱਜ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੇ ॥
satigur raakhe se vaddabhaage |
How very fortunate are those who have been saved by the True Guru.
ਉਹ ਬੜੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਕੈਦ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗੇ ॥੮॥੬॥

O Nanak, they are attached to the feet of the Guru. ||8||6||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲੱਗਦੇ (ਸ਼ਰਨ ਪੈਂਦੇ) ਹਨ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ॥੮॥੬॥

ਰਾਗ ਆਸਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ।
ਗਾਵਹਿ ਗੀਤੇ ਚੀਤਿ ਅਨੀਤੇ ॥

They sing religious songs, but their consciousness is wicked.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸੁਣਾਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ) ਗੀਤ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਮੰਦੇ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ (ਮੌਜੂਦ) ਹਨ
ਰਾਗ ਸੁਣਾਇ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ਬੀਤੇ ॥

They sing the songs, and call themselves divine,
ਜੇਹੜੇ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਰਾਗ (ਦ੍ਵੈਖ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ) ਸੁਣਾ ਕੇ ਅਖਵਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਰਾਗ ਦ੍ਵੈਖ ਤੋਂ ਬਚੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਾਂ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਝੂਠੁ ਅਨੀਤੇ ॥੧॥
bin naavai man jhootth aneete |1|
but without the Name, their minds are false and wicked. ||1||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਝੂਠ (ਵੱਸਦਾ) ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਕਰਮ (ਟਿਕੇ ਹੋਏ) ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਕਹਾ ਚਲਹੁ ਮਨ ਰਹਹੁ ਘਰੇ ॥
kahaa chalahu man rahahu ghare |
Where are you going? O mind, remain in your own home.
(ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੱਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ) ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ (ਕੁਕਰਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਕਿਉਂ ਭਟਕ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ? ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੁ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸੇ ਖੋਜਤ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਹਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
guramukh raam naam tripataase khojat paavahu sehaj hare |1| rahaau |
The Gurmukhs are satisfied with the Lord's Name searching, they easily find the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਹਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਭਾਲ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਹਜ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਲਏਂਗਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਮਨਿ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਰੀਰਾ ॥
kaam krodh man mohu sareeraa |
Sexual desire, anger and emotional attachment fill the mind and body
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਮ ਹੈ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਹੈ ਮੋਹ ਹੈ,
ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਸੁ ਪੀਰਾ ॥
lab lobh ahankaar su peeraa |
greed and egotism lead only to pain.
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੱਬ ਹੈ ਲੋਭ ਹੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਹੈ, (ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ) ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਹੈ,
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥੨॥

How can the mind be comforted without the Lord's Name? ||2||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਟਾਕਰਾ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ) ਕਿਵੇਂ ਹੌਸਲਾ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ॥੨॥
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
antar naavan saach pachhaanai |
One who cleanses himself within, knows the True Lord.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ (ਤੀਰਥ-) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
antar kee gat guramukh jaanai |
The Gurmukh knows the condition of his innermost being.
ਐਸਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਆਪਣੀ ਅੰਦਰਲੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਹਾਲਤ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦ ਬਿਨੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥੩॥
saach sabad bin mehal na pachhaanai |3|
Without the True Word of the Shabad, the Mansion of the Lord's Presence is not realized. ||3||
(ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ) ਸੱਚੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਛਾਣ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੩॥
ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਮਹਿ ਆਕਾਰੁ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
nirankaar meh aakaar samaavai |
One who merges his form into the Formless Lord,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਆਪਣੀ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਹਰ ਵਲੋਂ ਰੋਕ ਕੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੈ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ )
ਅਕਲ ਕਲਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਟਿਕਾਵੈ ॥
akal kalaa sach saach ttikaavai |
abides in the True Lord, the Powerful, beyond power.
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸੱਤਿਆ-ਗਿਣਤੀ ਮਿਣਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸੋ ਨਰੁ ਗਰਭ ਜੋਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਆਵੈ ॥੪॥
so nar garabh jon nahee aavai |4|
Such a person does not enter into the womb of reincarnation again. ||4||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ॥੪॥
ਜਹਾਂ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਹ ਜਾਉ ॥
jahaan naam milai teh jaau |
Go there, where you may obtain the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
(ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਇਹ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਜਿਥੋਂ (ਗੁਰ-ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਏ, ਮੈਂ ਉਥੇ ਹੀ ਜਾਵਾਂ,
