ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur parasaadee har ras paaeaa naam padaarath nau nidh paaee |1| rahaau |
By Guru's Grace, I have obtained the sublime essence of the Lord I have received the wealth of the Naam and the nine treasures. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਚੱਖ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰਾ ਉੱਤਮ ਨਾਮ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਨੌ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਧਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਹੀ ਧਨ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਟਾਕਰੇ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੁੱਛ ਜਾਪਦਾ ਹੈ) ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
karam dharam sach saachaa naau |
Those whose karma and Dharma - whose actions and faith - are in the True Name of the True Lord
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਕਰਮ ਤੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਫ਼ਰਜ਼ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਾ ਕੈ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥
taa kai sad balihaarai jaau |
I am forever a sacrifice to them.
ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
jo har raate se jan paravaan |
Those who are imbued with the Lord are accepted and respected.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਬੂਲ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਰਮ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥੨॥
tin kee sangat param nidhaan |2|
In their company, the supreme wealth is obtained. ||2||
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਕੀਮਤੀ (ਨਾਮ) ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਹਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਧਨ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
har var jin paaeaa dhan naaree |
Blessed is that bride, who has obtained the Lord as her Husband.
ਉਹ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ (ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਲੱਭ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਰਾਤੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
har siau raatee sabad veechaaree |
She is imbued with the Lord, and she reflects upon the Word of His Shabad.
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਵਿਚਾਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੈ ॥
aap tarai sangat kul taarai |
She saves herself, and saves her family and friends as well.
ਉਹ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਆਪ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਕੁਲ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਰ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਤਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ॥੩॥
satigur sev tat veechaarai |3|
She serves the True Guru, and contemplates the essence of reality. ||3||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਾਹ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਦਾ ਅਸਲ ਲਾਭ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਹਮਰੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਉ ॥

The True Name is my social status and honor.
(ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਚੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਹੈ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਚੀ ਕੁਲ ਦਾ ਧਰਵਾਸ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ) ਤੇਰਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਉੱਚੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਤੇ ਕੁਲ ਹੋਵੇ,
ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਤ ਭਾਉ ॥
karam dharam sanjam sat bhaau |
The love of the Truth is my karma and Dharma - my faith and my actions, and my self-control.
ਤੇਰਾ ਸੱਚਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕਰਮ, ਧਰਮ ਤੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਜੁਗਤਿ ਹੋਵੇ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸੇ ਪੂਛ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
naanak bakhase poochh na hoe |
O Nanak, one who is forgiven by the Lord is not called to account.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਜਨਮਾਂਤਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਲੇਖਾ ਨਿਬੜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ (ਫਿਰ) ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਲੇਖਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ,
ਦੂਜਾ ਮੇਟੇ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥੧੪॥
doojaa mette eko soe |4|14|
The One Lord erases duality. ||4||14||
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਹਰ ਪਾਸੇ) ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੀ ਹੋਂਦ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧੪॥

Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਇਕਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਆਈ ॥
eik aaveh ik jaaveh aaee |
Some come, and after they come, they go.
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜਨਮ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ (ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਨਿਰੇ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਹੀ ਹਨ ਤੇ (ਫਿਰ ਇਥੋਂ) ਚਲੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਇਕਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਰਹਹਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
eik har raate raheh samaaee |
Some are imbued with the Lord they remain absorbed in Him.
ਪਰ ਇਕ (ਸੁਭਾਗੇ ਐਸੇ) ਹਨ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਇਕਿ ਧਰਨਿ ਗਗਨ ਮਹਿ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
eik dharan gagan meh tthaur na paaveh |
Some find no place of rest at all, on the earth or in the sky.
(ਪਰ) ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਤੇ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਲਈ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਦੀ,
ਸੇ ਕਰਮਹੀਣ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ॥੧॥
se karamaheen har naam na dhiaaveh |1|
Those who do not meditate on the Name of the Lord are the most unfortunate. ||1||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਅਭਾਗੇ ਹਨ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ॥੧॥
ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੇ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
gur poore te gat mit paaee |
From the Perfect Guru, the way to salvation is obtained.
ਉੱਚੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਬਿਖੁ ਵਤ ਅਤਿ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
eihu sansaar bikh vat at bhaujal gurasabadee har paar langhaaee |1| rahaau |
This world is a terrifying ocean of poison through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Lord helps us cross over. ||1||Pause||
ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਇਕ ਬਹਤ ਵਿਹੁਲੀ ਘੁੰਮਣਘੇਰੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ (ਤੇ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਕੇ) ਇਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਿਨੑ ਕਉ ਆਪਿ ਲਏ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਲਿ ॥
jina kau aap le prabh mel |
Those, whom God unites with Himself,
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਆਪਣੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਪੇਲਿ ॥
tin kau kaal na saakai pel |
cannot be crushed by death.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਢਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਰਹਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
guramukh niramal raheh piaare |
The beloved Gurmukhs remain immaculately pure,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਵਰਤਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਭੀ) ਉਹ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਇਉਂ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ-ਆਤਮਾ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਅੰਭ ਊਪਰਿ ਕਮਲ ਨਿਰਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
jiau jal anbh aoopar kamal niraare |2|
like the lotus in the water, which remains untouched. ||2||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਕੌਲ-ਫੁੱਲ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਹੀਐ ॥
buraa bhalaa kahu kis no kaheeai |
Tell me: who should we call good or bad?
ਪਰ ਨਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਾੜਾ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਦੀਸੈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਲਹੀਐ ॥
deesai braham guramukh sach laheeai |
Behold the Lord God the truth is revealed to the Gurmukh.
ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਹਰੇਕ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹਾਂ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਲੱਭਦਾ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਹੀ।
ਅਕਥੁ ਕਥਉ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

I speak the Unspoken Speech of the Lord, contemplating the Guru's Teachings.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਬਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਲਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ (ਕੁਝ) ਗੁਣ ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਮਿਲਿ ਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਉ ਪਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
mil gur sangat paavau paar |3|
I join the Sangat, the Guru's Congregation, and I find God's limits. ||3||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ (ਇਸ ਵਿਹੁਲੀ ਘੁੰਮਣਘੇਰੀ ਦਾ) ਪਾਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੩॥
ਸਾਸਤ ਬੇਦ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਭੇਦ ॥
saasat bed sinmrit bahu bhed |
The Shaastras, the Vedas, the Simritees and all their many secrets
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਣੋ-
ਅਠਸਠਿ ਮਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਰੇਦ ॥
atthasatth majan har ras red |
bathing at the sixty-eight holy places of pilgrimage - all this is found by enshrining the sublime essence of the Lord in the heart.
ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਵਖ ਵਖ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਵਿਚਾਰਨੇ, ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਅਠਾਹਠ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
guramukh niramal mail na laagai |
The Gurmukhs are immaculately pure no filth sticks to them.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ (ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਲਿਆਂ) ਜੀਵਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗਦੀ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਡੇ ਧੁਰਿ ਭਾਗੈ ॥੪॥੧੫॥
naanak hiradai naam vadde dhur bhaagai |4|15|
O Nanak, the Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides in the heart, by the greatest pre-ordained destiny. ||4||15||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਧੁਰੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਲੋਂ ਹੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧੫॥

ਨਿਵਿ ਨਿਵਿ ਪਾਇ ਲਗਉ ਗੁਰ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਆ ॥
niv niv paae lgau gur apune aatam raam nihaariaa |
Bowing down, again and again, I fall at the Feet of my Guru through Him, I have seen the Lord, the Divine Self, within.
ਮੈਂ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨੀ ਲਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ, (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਾਮ ਵੇਖ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਤ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਵਿਆ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਦੇਖਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥੧॥
karat beechaar hiradai har raviaa hiradai dekh beechaariaa |1|
Through contemplation and meditation, the Lord dwells within the heart see this, and understand. ||1||
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਨਾਲ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਮਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ, ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ, ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥
ਬੋਲਹੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥
bolahu raam kare nisataaraa |
So speak the Lord's Name, which shall emancipate you.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰੋ, ਸਿਮਰਨ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਰਤਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਭੈ ਮਿਟੈ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਉਜੀਆਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur parasaad ratan har laabhai mittai agiaan hoe ujeeaaraa |1| rahaau |
By Guru's Grace, the jewel of the Lord is found ignorance is dispelled, and the Divine Light shines forth. ||1||Pause||
ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਲੱਭ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਰਵਨੀ ਰਵੈ ਬੰਧਨ ਨਹੀ ਤੂਟਹਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
ravanee ravai bandhan nahee tootteh vich haumai bharam na jaaee |
By merely saying it with the tongue, one's bonds are not broken, and egotism and doubt do not depart from within.
(ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਪਰ) ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ (ਬ੍ਰਹਮ-ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀਆਂ) ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲੇ) ਬੰਧਨ ਟੁੱਟਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਮੈਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਵਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਵਾਂ-ਇਸੇ ਘੁੰਮਣਘੇਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ), ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੂਟੈ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਲੇਖੈ ਪਾਈ ॥੨॥
satigur milai ta haumai toottai taa ko lekhai paaee |2|
But when one meets the True Guru, egotism departs, and then, one realizes his destiny. ||2||
ਜਦੋਂ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲੇ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਟੁੱਟਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ) ਪਰਵਾਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
har har naam bhagat pria preetam sukh saagar ur dhaare |
The Name of the Lord, Har, Har, is sweet and dear to His devotees it is the ocean of peace - enshrine it within the heart.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਮਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
bhagat vachhal jagajeevan daataa mat guramat har nisataare |3|
The Lover of His devotees, the Life of the World, the Lord bestows the Guru's Teachings upon the intellect, and one is emancipated. ||3||
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਭਗਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਮਨ ਸਿਉ ਜੂਝਿ ਮਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਏ ਮਨਸਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
man siau joojh marai prabh paae manasaa maneh samaae |
One who dies fighting against his own stubborn mind finds God, and the desires of the mind are quieted.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਜੀਵ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨਾਲ ਤਕੜਾ ਟਾਕਰਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਲੋਂ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਹਉਮੈ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ), ਮਨ ਦੇ ਫੁਰਨੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ) ਲੀਨ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਸਹਜ ਭਾਇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥੪॥੧੬॥
naanak kripaa kare jagajeevan sehaj bhaae liv laae |4|16|
O Nanak, if the Life of the World bestows His Mercy, one is intuitively attuned to the Love of the Lord. ||4||16||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਅਡੋਲ-ਚਿੱਤ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧੬॥

ਕਿਸ ਕਉ ਕਹਹਿ ਸੁਣਾਵਹਿ ਕਿਸ ਕਉ ਕਿਸੁ ਸਮਝਾਵਹਿ ਸਮਝਿ ਰਹੇ ॥
kis kau kaheh sunaaveh kis kau kis samajhaaveh samajh rahe |
Unto whom do they speak? Unto whom do they preach? Who understands? Let them understand themselves.
('ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰ' ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਿਆਂ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਭੀ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਦਿਖਾਵਾ ਤੇ ਹੋਛਾ-ਪਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ), ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ('ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰ' ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ) ਗਿਆਨਵਾਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ-ਆਪ ਨਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ ਨਾਹ ਸੁਣਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਨਾਹ ਸਮਝਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਕਿਸੈ ਪੜਾਵਹਿ ਪੜਿ ਗੁਣਿ ਬੂਝੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੰਤੋਖਿ ਰਹੇ ॥੧॥
kisai parraaveh parr gun boojhe satigur sabad santokh rahe |1|
Who do they teach? Through study, they come to realize the Lord's Glorious Virtues. Through the Shabad, the Word of the True Guru, they come to dwell in contentment. ||1||
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ('ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰ' ਦੀਆਂ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਾਂ) ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਭੇਤ ਨੂੰ) ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦਾ ਦਿਖਾਵਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ (ਹੋਛਾ-ਪਨ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ) ਉਹ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਿਤੀਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
