ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਬਿਸਰੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਦੀਆ ॥
so kiau bisarai jin sabh kichh deea |
Why forget Him, who has given us everything?
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਿਉਂ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਏ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਬਿਸਰੈ ਜਿ ਜੀਵਨ ਜੀਆ ॥
so kiau bisarai ji jeevan jeea |
Why forget Him, who is the Life of the living beings?
ਜੋ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ?
ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਬਿਸਰੈ ਜਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਖੈ ॥
so kiau bisarai ji agan meh raakhai |
Why forget Him, who preserves us in the fire of the womb?
ਉਹ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਿਉਂ ਵਿਸਰ ਜਾਏ ਜੋ (ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਦੀ) ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਬਚਾ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਕੋ ਬਿਰਲਾ ਲਾਖੈ ॥
gur prasaad ko biralaa laakhai |
By Guru's Grace, rare is the one who realizes this.
(ਪਰ) ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ (ਇਹ ਗੱਲ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਬਿਸਰੈ ਜਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਤੇ ਕਾਢੈ ॥
so kiau bisarai ji bikh te kaadtai |
Why forget Him, who lifts us up out of corruption?
ਉਹ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਿਉਂ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਏ ਜੋ (ਮਾਇਆ-ਰੂਪ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕਾ ਟੂਟਾ ਗਾਢੈ ॥
janam janam kaa ttoottaa gaadtai |
Those separated from Him for countless lifetimes, are re-united with Him once again.
ਅਤੇ ਕਈ ਜਨਮ ਦੇ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ) ਜੋੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਤਤੁ ਇਹੈ ਬੁਝਾਇਆ ॥
gur poorai tat ihai bujhaaeaa |
Through the Perfect Guru, this essential reality is understood.
(ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਸਮਝਾਈ ਹੈ,
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥੪॥
prabh apanaa naanak jan dhiaaeaa |4|
O Nanak, God's humble servants meditate on Him. ||4||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਸਾਜਨ ਸੰਤ ਕਰਹੁ ਇਹੁ ਕਾਮੁ ॥
saajan sant karahu ihu kaam |
O friends, O Saints, make this your work.
ਹੇ ਸੱਜਣ ਜਨੋ! ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਇਹ ਕੰਮ ਕਰੋ,
ਆਨ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਜਪਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
aan tiaag japahu har naam |
Renounce everything else, and chant the Name of the Lord.
ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ (ਆਹਰ) ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਹੁ।
ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥
simar simar simar sukh paavahu |
Meditate, meditate, meditate in remembrance of Him, and find peace.
ਸਦਾ ਸਿਮਰੋ ਤੇ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ ਸੁਖ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰੋ
ਆਪਿ ਜਪਹੁ ਅਵਰਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਵਹੁ ॥
aap japahu avarah naam japaavahu |
Chant the Naam yourself, and inspire others to chant it.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪ ਜਪਹੁ ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਜਪਾਵਹੁ।
ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਇ ਤਰੀਐ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
bhagat bhaae tareeai sansaar |
By loving devotional worship, you shall cross over the world-ocean.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਹੁਂ ਲਾਇਆਂ ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ (ਸਮੁੰਦਰ) ਤਰੀਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਤਨੁ ਹੋਸੀ ਛਾਰੁ ॥
bin bhagatee tan hosee chhaar |
Without devotional meditation, the body will be just ashes.
ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਸਰਬ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਸੂਖ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
sarab kaliaan sookh nidh naam |
All joys and comforts are in the treasure of the Naam.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭਲੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈ,
ਬੂਡਤ ਜਾਤ ਪਾਏ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮੁ ॥
booddat jaat paae bisraam |
Even the drowning can reach the place of rest and safety.
(ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਡੁੱਬਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਸਰਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ
ਸਗਲ ਦੂਖ ਕਾ ਹੋਵਤ ਨਾਸੁ ॥
sagal dookh kaa hovat naas |
All sorrows shall vanish.
(ਤੇ) ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਗੁਨਤਾਸੁ ॥੫॥

O Nanak, chant the Naam, the treasure of excellence. ||5||
(ਤਾਂ ਤੇ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਨਾਮ ਜਪਹੁ, (ਨਾਮ ਹੀ) ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ (ਹੈ) ॥੫॥
ਉਪਜੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਉ ॥
aupajee preet prem ras chaau |
Love and affection, and the taste of yearning, have welled up within
(ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ) ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਤੇ ਚਾਉ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,
ਮਨ ਤਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਇਹੀ ਸੁਆਉ ॥
man tan antar ihee suaau |
within my mind and body, this is my purpose:
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਤਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਹੀ ਚਾਹ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਮਿਲੇ)।
ਨੇਤ੍ਰਹੁ ਪੇਖਿ ਦਰਸੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
netrahu pekh daras sukh hoe |
beholding with my eyes His Blessed Vision, I am at peace.
ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ) ਦੀਦਾਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਖ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਨੁ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਸਾਧ ਚਰਨ ਧੋਇ ॥
man bigasai saadh charan dhoe |
My mind blossoms forth in ecstasy, washing the feet of the Holy.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਧੋ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਖਿੜ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਰੰਗੁ ॥
bhagat janaa kai man tan rang |
The minds and bodies of His devotees are infused with His Love.
ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਪਿਆਰ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਰਲਾ ਕੋਊ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੰਗੁ ॥
biralaa koaoo paavai sang |
Rare is the one who obtains their company.
(ਪਰ) ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਸੀਬ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਏਕ ਬਸਤੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਕਰਿ ਮਇਆ ॥
ek basat deejai kar meaa |
Show Your mercy - please, grant me this one request:
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਇਕ ਨਾਮ-ਵਸਤੂ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਸਾਨੂੰ) ਦੇਹ,
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਲਇਆ ॥
gur prasaad naam jap leaa |
by Guru's Grace, may I chant the Naam.
(ਤਾਂ ਜੋ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਸਕੀਏ।
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਉਪਮਾ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
taa kee upamaa kahee na jaae |
His Praises cannot be spoken
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਰਬ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੬॥
naanak rahiaa sarab samaae |6|
O Nanak, He is contained among all. ||6||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਭ ਥਾਈਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਖਸੰਦ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ॥
prabh bakhasand deen deaal |
God, the Forgiving Lord, is kind to the poor.
ਹੇ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਨਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹੇ ਗਰੀਬਾਂ ਤੇ ਤਰਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ!
ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲ ਸਦਾ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ॥
bhagat vachhal sadaa kirapaal |
He loves His devotees, and He is always merciful to them.
ਹੇ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ! ਹੇ ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆ ਦੇ ਘਰ!
ਅਨਾਥ ਨਾਥ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੁਪਾਲ ॥
anaath naath gobind gupaal |
The Patron of the patronless, the Lord of the Universe, the Sustainer of the world,
ਹੇ ਅਨਾਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਥ! ਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ! ਹੇ ਗੋਪਾਲ!
ਸਰਬ ਘਟਾ ਕਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ॥
sarab ghattaa karat pratipaal |
the Nourisher of all beings.
ਹੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਰੀਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ!
ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਾਰਣ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥
aad purakh kaaran karataar |
The Primal Being, the Creator of the Creation.
ਹੇ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹੇ (ਜਗਤ ਦੇ) ਮੂਲ! ਹੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ!
ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰ ॥
bhagat janaa ke praan adhaar |
The Support of the breath of life of His devotees.
ਹੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ!
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਜਪੈ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਪੁਨੀਤ ॥
jo jo japai su hoe puneet |
Whoever meditates on Him is sanctified,
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪਵ੍ਰਿੱਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਇ ਲਾਵੈ ਮਨ ਹੀਤ ॥
bhagat bhaae laavai man heet |
focusing the mind in loving devotional worship.
ਭਗਤੀ-ਭਾਵ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਟਿਕਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਉਧਾਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।)
ਹਮ ਨਿਰਗੁਨੀਆਰ ਨੀਚ ਅਜਾਨ ॥
ham niraguneeaar neech ajaan |
I am unworthy, lowly and ignorant.
ਅਸੀਂ ਨੀਚ ਹਾਂ, ਅੰਞਾਣ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਗੁਣ-ਹੀਨ ਹਾਂ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਸਰਨਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥੭॥
naanak tumaree saran purakh bhagavaan |7|
Nanak has entered Your Sanctuary, O Supreme Lord God. ||7||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਆਖ-) ਹੇ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ! ਹੇ ਭਗਵਾਨ! ਅਸੀਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਏ ਹਾਂ ॥੭॥
ਸਰਬ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਮੋਖ ਪਾਏ ॥
sarab baikuntth mukat mokh paae |
Everything is obtained: the heavens, liberation and deliverance,
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਰਗ ਤੇ ਮੋਖ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਏ ਹਨ,
ਏਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਏ ॥
ek nimakh har ke gun gaae |
if one sings the Lord's Glories, even for an instant.
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਅੱਖ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਫੋਰ ਮਾਤ੍ਰ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ਹਨ।
ਅਨਿਕ ਰਾਜ ਭੋਗ ਬਡਿਆਈ ॥
anik raaj bhog baddiaaee |
So many realms of power, pleasures and great glories,
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਰਾਜ-ਭੋਗ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਤੇ ਵਡਿਆਈਆਂ ਮਿਲ ਗਈਆਂ ਹਨ,
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਕਥਾ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਈ ॥
har ke naam kee kathaa man bhaaee |
come to one whose mind is pleased with the Sermon of the Lord's Name.
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ-ਬਾਤ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੈ।
ਬਹੁ ਭੋਜਨ ਕਾਪਰ ਸੰਗੀਤ ॥
bahu bhojan kaapar sangeet |
Abundant foods, clothes and music
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੇ ਖਾਣੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਤੇ ਰਾਗ-ਰੰਗ ਹਾਸਲ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ,
ਰਸਨਾ ਜਪਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨੀਤ ॥
rasanaa japatee har har neet |
come to one whose tongue continually chants the Lord's Name, Har, Har.
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਭਲੀ ਸੁ ਕਰਨੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਧਨਵੰਤ ॥
bhalee su karanee sobhaa dhanavant |
His actions are good, he is glorious and wealthy
ਉਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਆਚਰਨ ਭਲਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ, ਓਹੀ ਧਨਾਢ ਹੈ,
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਬਸੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰ ਮੰਤ ॥
hiradai base pooran gur mant |
the Mantra of the Perfect Guru dwells within his heart.
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦੇਹੁ ਨਿਵਾਸ ॥
saadhasang prabh dehu nivaas |
O God, grant me a home in the Company of the Holy.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਆਪਣੇ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਥਾਂ ਦੇਹ।
ਸਰਬ ਸੂਖ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਰਗਾਸ ॥੮॥੨੦॥

All pleasures, O Nanak, are so revealed. ||8||20||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ) ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੨੦॥

ਸਰਗੁਨ ਨਿਰਗੁਨ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਆਪਿ ॥
saragun niragun nirankaar sun samaadhee aap |
He possesses all qualities He transcends all qualities He is the Formless Lord. He Himself is in Primal Samaadhi.
ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ (ਭਾਵ, ਆਕਾਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ) ਤ੍ਰਿਗੁਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਗਤ ਰੂਪ) ਭੀ ਆਪ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਭੀ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਅਫੁਰ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਭੀ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਨ ਕੀਆ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਾਪਿ ॥੧॥
aapan keea naanakaa aape hee fir jaap |1|
Through His Creation, O Nanak, He meditates on Himself. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਰਚਿਆ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ) ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

ਜਬ ਅਕਾਰੁ ਇਹੁ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੇਤਾ ॥

When this world had not yet appeared in any form,
ਜਦੋਂ (ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਜੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਅਜੇ) ਕੋਈ ਸ਼ਕਲ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦੀ ਸੀ,
ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਤਬ ਕਹ ਤੇ ਹੋਤਾ ॥

who then committed sins and performed good deeds?
ਤਦੋਂ ਪਾਪ ਜਾਂ ਪੁੰਨ ਕਿਸ (ਜੀਵ) ਤੋਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੀ?
ਜਬ ਧਾਰੀ ਆਪਨ ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧਿ ॥
jab dhaaree aapan sun samaadh |
When the Lord Himself was in Profound Samaadhi,
ਜਦੋਂ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ) ਆਪ ਅਫੁਰ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਾਲੀ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਲਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ (ਭਾਵ ਜਦੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਸਤ ਸੀ),
ਤਬ ਬੈਰ ਬਿਰੋਧ ਕਿਸੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਕਮਾਤਿ ॥

then against whom were hate and jealousy directed?
ਤਦੋਂ (ਕਿਸ ਨੇ) ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਵੈਰ-ਵਿਰੋਧ ਕਮਾਉਣਾ ਸੀ?
ਜਬ ਇਸ ਕਾ ਬਰਨੁ ਚਿਹਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਪਤ ॥
jab is kaa baran chihan na jaapat |
When there was no color or shape to be seen,
ਜਦੋਂ ਇਸ (ਜਗਤ) ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਰੰਗ-ਰੂਪ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ,
ਤਬ ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਸਹਿ ਬਿਆਪਤ ॥

then who experienced joy and sorrow?
ਤਦੋਂ ਦੱਸੋ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਜਾਂ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੋਹ ਸਕਦੇ ਸਨ?
ਜਬ ਆਪਨ ਆਪ ਆਪਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ॥
jab aapan aap aap paarabraham |
When the Supreme Lord Himself was Himself All-in-all,
ਜਦੋਂ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਕੇਵਲ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪ ਸੀ,
ਤਬ ਮੋਹ ਕਹਾ ਕਿਸੁ ਹੋਵਤ ਭਰਮ ॥
tab moh kahaa kis hovat bharam |
then where was emotional attachment, and who had doubts?
ਤਦੋਂ ਮੋਹ ਕਿਥੇ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੀ, ਤੇ ਭਰਮ-ਭੁਲੇਖੇ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ ਸਨ?
