ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਬਿਭੂਤ ਲਾਇ ਦੇਹ ਸਵਾਰੀ ॥

The Sannyaasee smears his body with ashes
ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਨੇ ਸੁਆਹ ਮਲ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਪਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਤਿਆਗੁ ਕਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਚਾਰੀ ॥

renouncing other men's women, he practices celibacy.
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪਰਾਈ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ ਤਿਆਗ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਚਰਜ ਧਾਰਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਨੇ ਨਿਰੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਚਰਜ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਰਿ ਆਸ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

I am just a fool, Lord I place my hopes in You! ||2||
ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਿਗਾਹਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਰਗਾ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ, ਪਰ) ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਸੂਰਤਣੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

The Kh'shaatriya acts bravely, and is recognized as a warrior.
(ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਧਰਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਖਤ੍ਰੀ (ਸੂਰਮਤਾ ਦੇ) ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸੂਰਮਤਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮਣਾ ਖੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਇਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਸੂਦੁ ਵੈਸੁ ਪਰ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥

The Shoodra and the Vaisha work and slave for others
ਸ਼ੂਦਰ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਵੈਸ਼ ਭੀ (ਵਣਜ ਆਦਿਕ) ਕਿਰਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਸ਼ੂਦਰ ਭੀ ਤੇ ਵੈਸ਼ ਭੀ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਕਿਰਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਗਨ ਹੈ,
ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਛਡਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
mai moorakh har naam chhaddaavai |3|
I am just a fool - I am saved by the Lord's Name. ||3||
ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਨਿਰੀ ਕਿਰਤ ਨੂੰ ਜੀਵਨ-ਮਨੋਰਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਦਾ, ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਜ਼ਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ (ਪਰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਯਕੀਨ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
sabh teree srisatt toon aap rahiaa samaaee |
The entire Universe is Yours You Yourself permeate and pervade it.
(ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਚੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, (ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈਂ (ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਝਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਉਹੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁੱਝਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are blessed with glorious greatness.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਜਿਸ ਕਿਸੇ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਾ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ) ਵਡਿਆਈ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੈ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਟੇਕ ਟਿਕਾਈ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੯॥

(ਇਹਨਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਭਾਣੇ ਮੈਂ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹਾਂ, ਪਰ) ਮੈਂ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੯॥

The Speech of the Lord is the most sublime speech, free of any attributes.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਉਤਾਂਹ ਹਨ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਉੱਚੇ ਟਿਕਾਣੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ)।
ਭਜੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਨ ਕੀ ॥
bhaj mil saadhoo sangat jan kee |
Vibrate on it, meditate on it, and join the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਭਜਨ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ।
ਤਰੁ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ॥੧॥
tar bhaujal akath kathaa sun har kee |1|
Cross over the terrifying world-ocean, listening to the Unspoken Speech of the Lord. ||1||
ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਕਰ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਦੱਸੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ (ਤੇ, ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ॥੧॥
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੇਲਾਇ ॥

O Lord of the Universe, unite me with the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.
ਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ! (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼,
ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਰਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har ras rasanaa raam gun gaae |1| rahaau |
My tongue savors the sublime essence of the Lord, singing the Lord's Glorious Praises. ||1||Pause||
(ਤਾਂ ਜੁ ਮੇਰੀ) ਜੀਭ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ (ਲੈ ਕੇ) ਹਰਿ-ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦੀ ਰਹੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜੋ ਜਨ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ॥
jo jan dhiaaveh har har naamaa |
Those humble beings who meditate on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਹੇ ਰਾਮ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਤਿਨ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸ ਕਰਹੁ ਹਮ ਰਾਮਾ ॥
tin daasan daas karahu ham raamaa |
please make me the slave of their slaves, Lord.
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਾਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਬਣਾ।
ਜਨ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਊਤਮ ਕਾਮਾ ॥੨॥
jan kee sevaa aootam kaamaa |2|
Serving Your slaves is the ultimate good deed. ||2||
(ਤੇਰੇ) ਦਾਸਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ) ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਕੰਮ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥
jo har kee har kathaa sunaavai |
One who chants the Speech of the Lord
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ) ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਹਮਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
so jan hamarai man chit bhaavai |
that humble servant is pleasing to my conscious mind.
ਉਹ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਨ ਪਗ ਰੇਣੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
jan pag ren vaddabhaagee paavai |3|
Those who are blessed with great good fortune obtain the dust of the feet of the humble. ||3||
(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ) ਭਗਤ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਕ ਕੋਈ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਹੀ) ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਨਿ ਆਈ ॥
sant janaa siau preet ban aaee |
Those who are blessed with such pre-ordained destiny
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ) ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ) ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨਿਭਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਲਿਖਤੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
jin kau likhat likhiaa dhur paaee |
Are in love with the humble Saints.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਧੁਰੋਂ (ਆਪਣੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਦਾ) ਲੇਖ ਲਿਖ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੋਵੇ।
ਤੇ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੪॥੨॥੪੦॥
te jan naanak naam samaaee |4|2|40|
Those humble beings, O Nanak, are absorbed in the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||2||40||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ (ਸਦਾ ਲਈ) ਲੀਨਤਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥੨॥੪੦॥

The mother loves to see her son eat.
(ਹਰੇਕ) ਮਾਂ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਮਨਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ (ਕੋਈ ਚੰਗੀ ਸ਼ੈ) ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੀਨੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਭਈ ਜਲਿ ਨਾਇ ॥

The fish loves to bathe in the water.
ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਨ੍ਹਾ ਕੇ ਮੱਛੀ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
satigur preet gurasikh mukh paae |1|
The True Guru loves to place food in the mouth of His GurSikh. ||1||
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਿਸੇ ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ (ਭੋਜਨ) ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਕਿਸੇ ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ॥੧॥
ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਹਮ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
te har jan har melahu ham piaare |
If only I could meet those humble servants of the Lord, O my Beloved.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਉਹ ਸੇਵਕ ਮਿਲਾ,
ਜਿਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਦੁਖ ਜਾਹਿ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jin miliaa dukh jaeh hamaare |1| rahaau |
Meeting with them, my sorrows depart. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਿਆਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ (ਤੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ) ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਿਉ ਮਿਲਿ ਬਛਰੇ ਗਊ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗਾਵੈ ॥
jiau mil bachhare gaoo preet lagaavai |
As the cow shows her love to her strayed calf when she finds it,
ਜਿਵੇਂ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਵੱਛੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਗਾਂ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਕਾਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਜਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਵੈ ॥
kaaman preet jaa pir ghar aavai |
and as the bride shows her love for her husband when he returns home,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਤੀ ਘਰ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਜਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
har jan preet jaa har jas gaavai |2|
so does the Lord's humble servant love to sing the Praises of the Lord. ||2||
(ਤਿਵੇਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਨੂੰ ਤਦੋਂ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਸਾਰਿੰਗ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਸੈ ਜਲ ਧਾਰਾ ॥
saaring preet basai jal dhaaraa |
The rainbird loves the rainwater, falling in torrents
ਪਪੀਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ (ਸ੍ਵਾਂਤੀ ਨਛੱਤ੍ਰ ਵਿਚ) ਮੁਹਲੇ-ਧਾਰ ਮੀਂਹ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਰਪਤਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥
narapat preet maaeaa dekh pasaaraa |
the king loves to see his wealth on display.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਕਿਸੇ) ਰਾਜੇ-ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਜਪੈ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
har jan preet japai nirankaaraa |3|
The humble servant of the Lord loves to meditate on the Formless Lord. ||3||
(ਤਿਵੇਂ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਨਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਧਨੁ ਖਾਟੇ ॥
nar praanee preet maaeaa dhan khaatte |
The mortal man loves to accumulate wealth and property.
ਹਰੇਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਧਨ ਖੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗਲਾਟੇ ॥

The GurSikh loves to meet and embrace the Guru.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ (ਮਹਿਸੂਸ) ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਗਲ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸਾਧ ਪਗ ਚਾਟੇ ॥੪॥੩॥੪੧॥

Servant Nanak loves to kiss the feet of the Holy. ||4||3||41||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦੇ ਪੈਰ ਚੁੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੩॥੪੧॥

ਭੀਖਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਭੀਖ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਾਇ ॥

The beggar loves to receive charity from the wealthy landlord.
ਮੰਗਤੇ ਨੂੰ (ਤਦੋਂ) ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਘਰ ਦੇ) ਮਾਲਕ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਭਿੱਖਿਆ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਭੂਖੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਅੰਨੁ ਖਾਇ ॥

The hungry person loves to eat food.
ਭੁੱਖੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ (ਤਦੋਂ) ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ) ਅੰਨ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਆਘਾਇ ॥੧॥

The GurSikh loves to find satisfaction by meeting the Guru. ||1||
(ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਲੋਂ ਸੰਤੁਸ਼ਟ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਸ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥
har darasan dehu har aas tumaaree |
O Lord, grant me the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan I place my hopes in You, Lord.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦਰਸਨ ਦੇਹ (ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਬਿਖੜੇ ਪੈਂਡੇ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ (ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਦੀ) ਆਸ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਲੋਚ ਪੂਰਿ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Shower me with Your Mercy, and fulfill my longing. ||1||Pause||
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰ, ਮੇਰੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਪੂਰੀ ਕਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਚਕਵੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੈ ॥

The song-bird loves the sun shining in her face.
ਚਕਵੀ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੂਰਜ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਿਲੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਭ ਦੁਖ ਤਿਆਗੈ ॥
milai piaare sabh dukh tiaagai |
Meeting her Beloved, all her pains are left behind.
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਸੂਰਜ ਚੜ੍ਹਨ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ) ਪਿਆਰੇ (ਚਕਵੇ) ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਦੇ) ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁਖ ਭੁਲਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੈ ॥੨॥

ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਬਛਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਖੀਰੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਖਾਇ ॥

The calf loves to suck its mother's milk
ਵੱਛੇ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੀ ਮਾਂ ਦਾ) ਦੁੱਧ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ ਪੀ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਦੇਖੈ ਮਾਇ ॥
hiradai bigasai dekhai maae |
its heart blossoms forth upon seeing its mother.
ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੀ) ਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਦਿਲ ਵਿਚ ਖਿੜਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਇ ॥੩॥

(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਹੋਰੁ ਸਭ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਕਾਚਾ ॥
hor sabh preet maaeaa mohu kaachaa |
All other loves and emotional attachment to Maya are false.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਹੋਰ ਮੋਹ ਕੱਚਾ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸਾਰੀ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਕੂਰਾ ਕਚੁ ਪਾਚਾ ॥
binas jaae kooraa kach paachaa |
They shall pass away, like false and transitory decorations.
ਹੋਰ ਮੋਹ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਝੂਠਾ ਹੈ, ਨਿਰਾ ਕੱਚ ਸਮਾਨ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਚਾ ॥੪॥੪॥੪੨॥
jan naanak preet tripat gur saachaa |4|4|42|
Servant Nanak is fulfilled, through the Love of the True Guru. ||4||4||42||
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸਨੂੰ (ਅਸਲ) ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਣ ਨਾਲ) ਸੰਤੋਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੪॥੪੨॥
