ਮਨਿ ਨਿਰਮਲਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
man niramal vasai sach soe |
The mind becomes pure, when the True Lord dwells within.
(ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ (ਹੋਏ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚਿ ਵਸਿਐ ਸਾਚੀ ਸਭ ਕਾਰ ॥
saach vasiai saachee sabh kaar |
When one dwells in Truth, all actions become true.
ਜੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਆ ਵਸੇ, ਤਾਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਨਿੱਤ ਦੀ ਕਾਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਊਤਮ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਬਦ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥੩॥

The ultimate action is to contemplate the Word of the Shabad. ||3||
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਾਚੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

Through the Guru, true service is performed.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
guramukh naam pachhaanai koe |
How rare is that Gurmukh who recognizes the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੀਵੈ ਦਾਤਾ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

The Giver, the Great Giver, lives forever.
(ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਭ ਦਾਤਾਂ) ਦੇਣ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਦਾਤਾਰ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਸਦਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉੱਤੇ) ਜੀਊਂਦਾ-ਜਾਗਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੪॥੧॥੨੧॥

Nanak enshrines love for the Name of the Lord. ||4||1||21||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧॥੨੧॥

ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪਾਏ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

Those who obtain spiritual wisdom from the Guru are very rare.
ਕੋਈ (ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੀਝੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
gur te boojhai seejhai soe |
Those who obtain this understanding from the Guru become acceptable.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ (ਇਹ ਰਾਜ਼) ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਖੇਡ ਵਿਚ) ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਹਜੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

Through the Guru, we intuitively contemplate the True One.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਟਿਕਵੀਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ) ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਏ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥੧॥
gur te paae mukat duaar |1|
Through the Guru, the Gate of Liberation is found. ||1||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ (ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨ) ਦਾ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ਾ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਆਇ ॥

Through perfect good destiny, we come to meet the Guru.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੀ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਨਾਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਆ ਕੇ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਚੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

The true ones are intuitively absorbed in the True Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥
gur miliai trisanaa agan bujhaae |
Meeting the Guru, the fire of desire is quenched.
ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਬੁਝਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਏ ॥
gur te saant vasai man aae |
Through the Guru, peace and tranquility come to dwell within the mind.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਆ ਵੱਸਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਵਿਤ ਪਾਵਨ ਸੁਚਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
gur te pavit paavan such hoe |
Through the Guru, we become pure, holy and true.
ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁੱਚ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
gur te sabad milaavaa hoe |2|
Through the Guru, we are absorbed in the Word of the Shabad. ||2||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਭ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥
baajh guroo sabh bharam bhulaaee |
Without the Guru, everyone wanders in doubt.
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਾਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਈ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ),
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥
bin naavai bahutaa dukh paaee |
Without the Name, they suffer in terrible pain.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਲੁਕਾਈ) ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ॥
guramukh hovai su naam dhiaaee |
Those who meditate on the Naam become Gurmukh.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦਰਸਨਿ ਸਚੈ ਸਚੀ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥੩॥
darasan sachai sachee pat hoee |3|
True honor is obtained through the Darshan, the Blessed Vision of the True Lord. ||3||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਦਾਤਾ ਇਕੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
kis no kaheeai daataa ik soee |
Why speak of any other? He alone is the Giver.
(ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਦਾਤ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ) ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਏ? ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਦਾਤ ਦੇਣ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਹੈ।
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਈ ॥
kirapaa kare sabad milaavaa hoee |
When He grants His Grace, union with the Shabad is obtained.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਉਹ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ॥

Meeting with my Beloved, I sing the Glorious Praises of the True Lord.
ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ (ਭੀ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਾ ॥੪॥੨॥੨੨॥
naanak saache saach samaavaa |4|2|22|
O Nanak, becoming true, I am absorbed in the True One. ||4||2||22||
ਨਾਨਕ (ਦੀ ਭੀ ਇਹੀ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਕਿ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਾਂ ॥੪॥੨॥੨੨॥

True is that place, where the mind becomes pure.
ਉਹ (ਸਤਸੰਗ) ਥਾਂ ਸੱਚਾ ਥਾਂ ਹੈ, (ਉਥੇ ਬੈਠਿਆਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ) ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਕਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
sach nivaas kare sach soe |
True is the one who abides in Truth.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ) ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਸਤ ਸੰਗ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਜਾਪੈ ॥
sachee baanee jug chaare jaapai |
The True Bani of the Word is known throughout the four ages.
(ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਚੌਹਾਂ ਜੁਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੈ ॥੧॥
sabh kichh saachaa aape aapai |1|
The True One Himself is everything. ||1||
(ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਯਕੀਨ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਆਕਾਰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਬਣਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
karam hovai satasang milaae |
Through the karma of good actions, one joins the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.
(ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ) ਕਿਰਪਾ ਹੋਵੇ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ) ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਬੈਸਿ ਸੁ ਥਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har gun gaavai bais su thaae |1| rahaau |
Sing the Glories of the Lord, sitting in that place. ||1||Pause||
ਉਸ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਲਉ ਇਹ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
jlau ih jihavaa doojai bhaae |
Burn this tongue, which loves duality,
ਸੜ ਜਾਏ ਇਹ ਜੀਭ ਜੇ ਇਹ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਸੁਆਦਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਨ ਚਾਖੈ ਫੀਕਾ ਆਲਾਇ ॥
har ras na chaakhai feekaa aalaae |
which does not taste the sublime essence of the Lord, and which utters insipid words.
ਜੇ ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਤਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੱਖਦੀ, ਪਰ (ਨਿੰਦਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੇ) ਫਿੱਕੇ ਬੋਲ ਹੀ ਬੋਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਫੀਕਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
bin boojhe tan man feekaa hoe |
Without understanding, the body and mind become tasteless and insipid.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਸਮਝਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਫਿੱਕਾ (ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ) ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਰੀਰ ਭੀ ਫਿੱਕਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰੇ ਭੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਹੋਛੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਵਲ ਦੌੜਨ ਦੇ ਆਦੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ)।
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਚਲਿਆ ਰੋਇ ॥੨॥
bin naavai dukheea chaliaa roe |2|
Without the Name, the miserable ones depart crying out in pain. ||2||
ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁਖੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਿਤੀਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਇਥੋਂ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
rasanaa har ras chaakhiaa sehaj subhaae |
One whose tongue naturally and intuitively tastes the Lord's sublime essence,
(ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ) ਜੀਭ ਨੇ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਚੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

By Guru's Grace, is absorbed in the True Lord.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ) ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚੇ ਰਾਤੀ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥
saache raatee gurasabad veechaar |
Imbued with Truth, one contemplates the Word of the Guru's Shabad,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਧਾਰ ॥੩॥
amrit peevai niramal dhaar |3|
and drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar, from the immaculate stream within. ||3||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਦੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਧਾਰ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਜੋ ਭਾਡਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
naam samaavai jo bhaaddaa hoe |
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is collected in the vessel of the mind.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਸੁੱਧ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਊਂਧੈ ਭਾਂਡੈ ਟਿਕੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
aoondhai bhaanddai ttikai na koe |
Nothing is collected if the vessel is upside-down.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਲੋਂ ਉਲਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਟਿਕਦਾ।
ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਮਨਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥
gurasabadee man naam nivaas |
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Naam abides within the mind.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਭਾਂਡਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਬਦ ਪਿਆਸ ॥੪॥੩॥੨੩॥
naanak sach bhaanddaa jis sabad piaas |4|3|23|
O Nanak, True is that vessel of the mind, which thirsts for the Shabad. ||4||3||23||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਅਸਲ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੩॥੨੩॥

ਇਕਿ ਗਾਵਤ ਰਹੇ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
eik gaavat rahe man saad na paae |
Some sing on and on, but their minds do not find happiness.
ਕਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ (ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ) ਗਾਂਦੇ (ਤਾਂ) ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਆਨੰਦ ਪੈਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ,
ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
haumai vich gaaveh birathaa jaae |
In egotism, they sing, but it is wasted uselessly.
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤ ਹੋਣ ਦੀ) ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚ (ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ) ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਉੱਦਮ) ਵਿਅਰਥ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗਾਵਣਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਜਿਨ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

Those who love the Naam, sing the song.
(ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ) ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
saachee baanee sabad beechaar |1|
They contemplate the True Bani of the Word, and the Shabad. ||1||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦਾ, ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ) ॥੧॥
ਗਾਵਤ ਰਹੈ ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
gaavat rahai je satigur bhaavai |
They sing on and on, if it pleases the True Guru.
ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗੇ (ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦਾ ਸਦਕਾ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
man tan raataa naam suhaavai |1| rahaau |
Their minds and bodies are embellished and adorned, attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਤਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਇਕਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇਹਿ ॥
eik gaaveh ik bhagat karehi |
Some sing, and some perform devotional worship.
ਕਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ (ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ) ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਰਾਸਾਂ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਸਨੇਹ ॥
naam na paaveh bin asaneh |
Without heart-felt love, the Naam is not obtained.
ਪਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਸਬਦ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥
sachee bhagat gurasabad piaar |
True devotional worship consists of love for the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਪਰਵਾਨ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਅਪਨਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
apanaa pir raakhiaa sadaa ur dhaar |2|
The devotee keeps his Beloved clasped tightly to his heart. ||2||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
