Gauree, First Mehl:
ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਨਹ ਮੇਟੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

Past actions cannot be erased.
ਜਨਮਾਂ ਜਨਮਾਂਤਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਮੂਹ ਜੋ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ (ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਿਟਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਕਿਆ ਜਾਣਾ ਕਿਆ ਆਗੈ ਹੋਇ ॥
kiaa jaanaa kiaa aagai hoe |
What do we know of what will happen hereafter?
(ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਅਗਾਂਹ ਲਈ ਭੀ ਕਰਮ-ਧਰਮ ਤੋਂ ਚੰਗੇ ਨਤੀਜੇ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ) ਕੋਈ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ ਕਿ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਮੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਹ ਵਾਪਰੇਗਾ।
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਸੋਈ ਹੂਆ ॥
jo tis bhaanaa soee hooaa |
Whatever pleases Him shall come to pass.
(ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਛੱਡੋ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਨਾ ਸਿੱਖੋ) ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ,
ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕਰਣੈ ਵਾਲਾ ਦੂਆ ॥੧॥
avar na karanai vaalaa dooaa |1|
There is no other Doer except Him. ||1||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ (ਉਸੇ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰੋ) ॥੧॥
ਨਾ ਜਾਣਾ ਕਰਮ ਕੇਵਡ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਾਤਿ ॥
naa jaanaa karam kevadd teree daat |
I do not know about karma, or how great Your gifts are.
ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਠੀਕ ਕੀਮਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ (ਮੈਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ), (ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ, ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਮੈਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝ ਸਕਦਾ (ਇਹ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਕਰਨਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਭਾਰੀ ਭੁੱਲ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਨਿਰੋਲ ਮਿਹਰ ਹੈ ਮਿਹਰ)।
ਕਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਜਾਤਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
karam dharam tere naam kee jaat |1| rahaau |
The karma of actions, the Dharma of righteousness, social class and status, are contained within Your Name. ||1||Pause||
ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਰਮ-ਧਰਮ ਹੈ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਓਟ ਹੈ। ਨਾਹ ਮਾਣ ਹੈ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮ-ਧਰਮ ਦਾ, ਨਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਉੱਚੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਦਾ) ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਤੂ ਏਵਡੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
too evadd daataa devanahaar |
You are So Great, O Giver, O Great Giver!
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਇਤਨਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਹੈਂ (ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ),
ਤੋਟਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥
tott naahee tudh bhagat bhanddaar |
The treasure of Your devotional worship is never exhausted.
ਤੇਰੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਗਤੀ (ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ) ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਘਾਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਕੀਆ ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
keea garab na aavai raas |
One who takes pride in himself shall never be right.
(ਆਪਣੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਆਚਰਨ ਬਾਰੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ) ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਕੁਝ ਸਵਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਤੇਰੇ ਹੀ ਆਸਰੇ ਹੈ।
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੨॥

The soul and body are all at Your disposal. ||2||
(ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੂੰ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਪਰਵਰਿਸ਼ ਲਈ ਰੋਜ਼ੀ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਜਿੰਦ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ) ॥੨॥
ਤੂ ਮਾਰਿ ਜੀਵਾਲਹਿ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥
too maar jeevaaleh bakhas milaae |
You kill and rejuvenate. You forgive and merge us into Yourself.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੇ ਕੇ, ਮੇਰੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ, ਮੇਰਾ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ,
ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੀ ਤਿਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਇ ॥
jiau bhaavee tiau naam japaae |
As it pleases You, You inspire us to chant Your Name.
ਤੇ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਾ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਤੂੰ ਦਾਨਾ ਬੀਨਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਮੇਰੈ ॥
toon daanaa beenaa saachaa sir merai |
You are All-knowing, All-seeing and True, O my Supreme Lord.
ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ (ਮੇਰੀ ਹਾਲਤ) ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਿਰ ਉੱਤੇ (ਰਾਖਾ) ਹੈਂ।
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੇਇ ਭਰੋਸੈ ਤੇਰੈ ॥੩॥
guramat dee bharosai terai |3|
Please, bless me with the Guru's Teachings my faith is in You alone. ||3||
ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਹੀ ਆਸਰੇ ਹਾਂ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ) ॥੩॥
ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
tan meh mail naahee man raataa |
One whose mind is attuned to the Lord, has no pollution in his body.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਤੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ) ਰੰਗਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
gur bachanee sach sabad pachhaataa |
Through the Guru's Word, the True Shabad is realized.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਚਨਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ (ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲਈ ਹੈ)।
ਤੇਰਾ ਤਾਣੁ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
teraa taan naam kee vaddiaaee |
All Power is Yours, through the greatness of Your Name.
(ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈਣ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ) ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਹਣਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੪॥੧੦॥
naanak rahanaa bhagat saranaaee |4|10|
Nanak abides in the Sanctuary of Your devotees. ||4||10||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਤੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥੧੦॥

ਜਿਨਿ ਅਕਥੁ ਕਹਾਇਆ ਅਪਿਓ ਪੀਆਇਆ ॥
jin akath kahaaeaa apio peeaeaa |
Those who speak the Unspoken, drink in the Nectar.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ) ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਅਕੱਥ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ) ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਲਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਅਨ ਭੈ ਵਿਸਰੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
an bhai visare naam samaaeaa |1|
Other fears are forgotten, and they are absorbed into the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲੇ) ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਹਮ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ (ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ) ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਕਿਆ ਡਰੀਐ ਡਰੁ ਡਰਹਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥
kiaa ddareeai ddar ddareh samaanaa |
Why should we fear, when fear is dispelled by the Fear of God?
ਉਹ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਝੰਬੇਲਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ) ਸਹਮਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਸ ਦਾ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲਾ) ਸਹਮ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਹੋਏ) ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
poore gur kai sabad pachhaanaa |1| rahaau |
Through the Shabad, the Word of the Perfect Guru, I recognize God. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਪਾ ਲਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਿਸੁ ਨਰ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
jis nar raam ridai har raas |
Those whose hearts are filled with the Lord's essence are blessed and acclaimed,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹਰੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਰਾਸ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਹੈ,
ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ਮਿਲੇ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥੨॥
sehaj subhaae mile saabaas |2|
And intuitively absorbed into the Lord. ||2||
ਉਹ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਡੋਲਦਾ, ਉਹ) ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਆਦਰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਜਾਹਿ ਸਵਾਰੈ ਸਾਝ ਬਿਆਲ ॥
jaeh savaarai saajh biaal |
Those whom the Lord puts to sleep, evening and morning
(ਪਰ) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ (ਸਵੇਰ ਸ਼ਾਮ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸੁੱਤੇ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਇਤ ਉਤ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬਾਧੇ ਕਾਲ ॥੩॥
eit ut manamukh baadhe kaal |3|
- those self-willed manmukhs are bound and gagged by Death, here and hereafter. ||3||
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਸਹਮ ਨਾਲ ਬੱਝੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਜਿਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਇਥੇ ਹਨ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਸਹਮ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਸਵਾਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਿਛੋਂ ਭੀ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਧੱਕੇ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ) ॥੩॥
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਸੇ ਪੂਰੇ ॥
ahinis raam ridai se poore |
Those whose hearts are filled with the Lord, day and night, are perfect.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪੂਰਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਨ (ਉਹ ਡੋਲਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ)।
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਮਿਲੇ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਦੂਰੇ ॥੪॥੧੧॥
naanak raam mile bhram doore |4|11|
O Nanak, they merge into the Lord, and their doubts are cast away. ||4||11||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਭ ਭਟਕਣਾਂ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ॥੪॥੧੧॥

ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੁ ॥
janam marai trai gun hitakaar |
One who loves the three qualities is subject to birth and death.
ਚਾਰੇ ਵੇਦ ਜਿਸ ਤ੍ਰੈਗੁਣੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ) ਉਸੇ ਤ੍ਰੈਗੁਣੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਹਿਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਚਾਰੇ ਬੇਦ ਕਥਹਿ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥
chaare bed katheh aakaar |
The four Vedas speak only of the visible forms.
ਉਹ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਘੁੰਮਣਘੇਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਤੀਨਿ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਕਹਹਿ ਵਖਿਆਨੁ ॥
teen avasathaa kaheh vakhiaan |
They describe and explain the three states of mind,
(ਅਜਿਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਜੋ ਭੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਮਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਤੁਰੀਆਵਸਥਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਨੁ ॥੧॥
tureeaavasathaa satigur te har jaan |1|
but the fourth state, union with the Lord, is known only through the True Guru. ||1||
(ਜਿਸ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਇੱਕ-ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ)। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਪਾ ਲਵੋ-ਇਹ ਹੈ ਤੁਰੀਆ ਅਵਸਥਾ ॥੧॥
ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤਰਣਾ ॥
raam bhagat gur sevaa taranaa |
Through devotional worship of the Lord, and service to the Guru, one swims across.
(ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਇਕ ਘੁੰਮਣਘੇਰੀ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਕਾਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਹੈ ਮਰਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
baahurr janam na hoe hai maranaa |1| rahaau |
Then, one is not born again, and is not subject to death. ||1||Pause||
(ਜੇਹੜਾ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਮੁੜ ਨਾਹ ਜਨਮ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਮੌਤ। (ਉਸ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਨੂੰ ਤੁਰੀਆ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਕਹਿ ਲਵੋ) ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਕਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥

Everyone speaks of the four great blessings
ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਧਰਮ ਅਰਥ ਕਾਮ ਮੋਖ (ਮੁਕਤੀ) ਇਹਨਾਂ ਚਾਰ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਤਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
sinmrit saasat panddit mukh soee |
the Simritees, the Shaastras and the Pandits speak of them as well.
ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੰਡਿਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਭੀ ਇਹੀ ਸੁਣੀਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਅਰਥੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
bin gur arath beechaar na paaeaa |
But without the Guru, they do not understand their true significance.
ਪਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਕੀਹ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਕਿਹੋ ਜੇਹੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਥੇ ਜੀਵ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
mukat padaarath bhagat har paaeaa |2|
The treasure of liberation is obtained through devotional worship of the Lord. ||2||
ਇਹ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਵਸਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
jaa kai hiradai vasiaa har soee |
Those, within whose hearts the Lord dwells,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥

become Gurmukh they receive the blessings of devotional worship.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ, ਤੇ ਇਹ ਭਗਤੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਆਨੰਦੁ ॥
har kee bhagat mukat aanand |
Through devotional worship of the Lord, liberation and bliss are obtained.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣੀਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਾਏ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦੁ ॥੩॥
guramat paae paramaanand |3|
Through the Guru's Teachings, supreme ecstasy is obtained. ||3||
ਇਹ ਉੱਚੇ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਿਆਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਜਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
jin paaeaa gur dekh dikhaaeaa |
One who meets the Guru, beholds Him, and inspires others to behold Him as well.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ, ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ,
ਆਸਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰਾਸੁ ਬੁਝਾਇਆ ॥
aasaa maeh niraas bujhaaeaa |
In the midst of hope, the Guru teaches us to live above hope and desire.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਆਸਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਉਪਰਾਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੀ ਜਾਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਖਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥੁ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥
deenaa naath sarab sukhadaataa |
He is the Master of the meek, the Giver of peace to all.
ਸਰਬ-ਸੁਖ-ਦਾਤਾ ਦੀਨਾਨਾਥ (ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਦਿਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ)
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣੀ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੪॥੧੨॥
naanak har charanee man raataa |4|12|
Nanak's mind is imbued with the Lotus Feet of the Lord. ||4||12||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ (ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ) ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧੨॥

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਾਇਆ ਰਹੈ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਬਾਜੀ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੋ ॥
amrit kaaeaa rahai sukhaalee baajee ihu sansaaro |
With your nectar-like body, you live in comfort, but this world is just a passing drama.
ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਅਮਰ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਸੁਖ ਮਾਣਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਲੱਗਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਕਿ) ਇਹ ਜਗਤ (ਇਕ) ਖੇਡ (ਹੀ) ਹੈ।
ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੁਚੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਉਠਾਵਹਿ ਭਾਰੋ ॥
lab lobh much koorr kamaaveh bahut utthaaveh bhaaro |
You practice greed, avarice and great falsehood, and you carry such a heavy burden.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਰੀਰ! ਤੂੰ ਲੱਬ ਲੋਭ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਕੂੜ ਕਮਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ (ਵਿਅਰਥ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਹੀ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ), ਤੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਲੱਬ ਲੋਭ ਕੂੜ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੇ ਅਸਰ ਹੇਠ ਕੀਤੇ ਮਾੜੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦਾ) ਭਾਰ ਚੁਕਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਤੂੰ ਕਾਇਆ ਮੈ ਰੁਲਦੀ ਦੇਖੀ ਜਿਉ ਧਰ ਉਪਰਿ ਛਾਰੋ ॥੧॥
toon kaaeaa mai ruladee dekhee jiau dhar upar chhaaro |1|
O body, I have seen you blowing away like dust on the earth. ||1||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਰੀਰ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਰਗੇ ਇਉਂ ਰੁਲਦੇ ਵੇਖੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਧਰਤੀ ਉਤੇ ਸੁਆਹ ॥੧॥
ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਸਿਖ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥
sun sun sikh hamaaree |

ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਮੇਰੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਣ।
ਸੁਕ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਕੀਤਾ ਰਹਸੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਜੀਅੜੇ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਵਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sukrit keetaa rahasee mere jeearre bahurr na aavai vaaree |1| rahaau |
Only the good deeds which you have done shall remain with you, O my soul. This opportunity shall not come again! ||1||Pause||
ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਨੇਕ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਭੇਗੀ। (ਜੇ ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਗਵਾ ਲਿਆ), ਤਾਂ ਮੁੜ (ਛੇਤੀ) ਵਾਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲੇਗੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
