ਤੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਕਿਹ ਬਿਚਾਰਿ ॥੧॥

What makes you think that it is real? ||1||
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਕੀਹ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ (ਇਸ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ) ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮੰਨੀ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈਂ? ॥੧॥
ਧਨੁ ਦਾਰਾ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਗ੍ਰੇਹ ॥

Wealth, spouse, property and household
ਹੇ ਮਨ! (ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਮਝ ਲੈ ਕਿ) ਧਨ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ, ਜਾਇਦਾਦ, ਘਰ-
ਕਛੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਸਮਝ ਲੇਹ ॥੨॥
kachh sang na chaalai samajh leh |2|
- none of them shall go along with you you must know that this is true! ||2||
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਚੀਜ਼ (ਮੌਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ) ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ ॥੨॥
ਇਕ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਾਰਾਇਨ ਹੋਇ ਸੰਗਿ ॥
eik bhagat naaraaein hoe sang |
Only devotion to the Lord shall go with you.
ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਜੁ ਤਿਹ ਏਕ ਰੰਗਿ ॥੩॥੪॥

Says Nanak, vibrate and meditate on the Lord with single-minded love. ||3||4||
(ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ (ਟਿਕ ਕੇ) ਉਸ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ ॥੩॥੪॥

ਕਹਾ ਭੂਲਿਓ ਰੇ ਝੂਠੇ ਲੋਭ ਲਾਗ ॥

Why do you wander lost, O mortal, attached to falsehood and greed?
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ (ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ) ਕਿੱਥੇ ਖੁੰਝਿਆ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ?
ਕਛੁ ਬਿਗਰਿਓ ਨਾਹਿਨ ਅਜਹੁ ਜਾਗ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Nothing has been lost yet - there is still time to wake up! ||1||Pause||
ਹੁਣ ਹੀ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਬਣ, (ਤੇ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰ। ਜੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰੇਂ, ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਤੇਰਾ) ਕੁਝ ਵਿਗੜਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਮ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਕੈ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਜਾਨੁ ॥
sam supanai kai ihu jag jaan |
You must realize that this world is nothing more than a dream.
ਇਸ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਪਨੇ (ਵਿਚ ਵੇਖੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ) ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਸਮਝ।
ਬਿਨਸੈ ਛਿਨ ਮੈ ਸਾਚੀ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੧॥
binasai chhin mai saachee maan |1|
In an instant, it shall perish know this as true. ||1||
ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਸੱਚੀ ਮੰਨ ਕਿ (ਇਹ ਜਗਤ) ਇਕ ਛਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਸੰਗਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਬਸਤ ਨੀਤ ॥
sang terai har basat neet |
The Lord constantly abides with you.
ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਿਸ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਭਜੁ ਤਾਹਿ ਮੀਤ ॥੨॥
nis baasur bhaj taeh meet |2|
Night and day, vibrate and meditate on Him, O my friend. ||2||
ਤੂੰ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਭਜਨ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ ॥੨॥
ਬਾਰ ਅੰਤ ਕੀ ਹੋਇ ਸਹਾਇ ॥
baar ant kee hoe sahaae |
At the very last instant, He shall be your Help and Support.
ਅਖ਼ੀਰਲੇ ਸਮੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਮਦਦਗਾਰ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਨ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਗਾਇ ॥੩॥੫॥

ਰਾਗ ਬਸੰਤੁ, ਘਰ ੧ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਅੱਠ-ਬੰਦਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਦੋ-ਤੁਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ।
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਗੁ ਕਊਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਚੀਤਿ ॥
jag kaooaa naam nahee cheet |
The world is a crow it does not remember the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਵੇਖ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਜੀਵ ਕਾਂ (ਦੇ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਵਾਲਾ) ਹੈ
ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਗਿਰੈ ਦੇਖੁ ਭੀਤਿ ॥

Forgetting the Naam, it sees the bait, and pecks at it.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ (ਉਹ ਕਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ) ਚੋਗੇ ਤੇ ਡਿੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਨੂਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਚੀਤਿ ਅਨੀਤਿ ॥
manooaa ddolai cheet aneet |
The mind wavers unsteadily, in guilt and deceit.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲ ਹੀ) ਡੋਲਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ (ਸਦਾ) ਖੋਟ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਗ ਸਿਉ ਤੂਟੀ ਝੂਠ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥੧॥

I have shattered my attachment to the false world. ||1||
ਪਰ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਝੂਠੀ ਹੈ, ਕਦੇ ਤੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ॥੧॥
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬਿਖੁ ਬਜਰੁ ਭਾਰੁ ॥
kaam krodh bikh bajar bhaar |
The burden of sexual desire, anger and corruption is unbearable.
(ਕਾਮ ਤੇ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ), ਇਹ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਇਕ ਕਰੜਾ ਬੋਝ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹੇਠ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਘੁੱਟ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਗੁਨ ਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Without the Naam, how can the mortal maintain a virtuous lifestyle? ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਆਚਰਨ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਦੇ ਬਣ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਘਰੁ ਬਾਲੂ ਕਾ ਘੂਮਨ ਘੇਰਿ ॥

The world is like a house of sand, built on a whirlpool
ਵੇਖ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਘੁੰਮਣ-ਘੇਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੇਤ ਦਾ ਘਰ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਵੇ,
ਬਰਖਸਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਬੁਦਬੁਦਾ ਹੇਰਿ ॥
barakhas baanee budabudaa her |
it is like a bubble formed by drops of rain.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਵਰਖਾ ਵੇਲੇ ਬੁਲਬੁਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਾਤ੍ਰ ਬੂੰਦ ਤੇ ਧਰਿ ਚਕੁ ਫੇਰਿ ॥
maatr boond te dhar chak fer |
It is formed from a mere drop, when the Lord's wheel turns round.
(ਤਿਵੇਂ ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਪਾਂਇਆਂ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਦਾ) ਚੱਕ ਘੁਮਾ ਕੇ (ਪਿਤਾ ਦੇ ਵੀਰਜ ਦੀ) ਬੂੰਦ ਮਾਤ੍ਰ ਤੋਂ ਰਚ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਘੁਮਿਆਰ ਚੱਕ ਘੁਮਾ ਕੇ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਤੋਂ ਭਾਂਡਾ ਬਣਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਸਰਬ ਜੋਤਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਕੀ ਚੇਰਿ ॥੨॥

The lights of all souls are the servants of the Lord's Name. ||2||
(ਸੋ, ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਨੂੰ) ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਸੀ ਬਣਾ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਸਰਬ ਉਪਾਇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਰਿ ਮੋਰੁ ॥

My Supreme Guru has created everything.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਸ਼ਿਰੋਮਣੀ ਹੈਂ, ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈਂ।
ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਉ ਪਗ ਲਾਗਉ ਤੋਰ ॥

I perform devotional worship service to You, and fall at Your Feet, O Lord.
ਮੇਰੀ ਇਹ ਤਾਂਘ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲੱਗਾ ਰਹਾਂ,
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੋ ਚਾਹਉ ਤੁਝ ਓਰੁ ॥
naam rato chaahau tujh or |
Imbued with Your Name, I long to be Yours.
ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਪੱਲਾ ਫੜੀ ਰੱਖਾਂ।
ਨਾਮੁ ਦੁਰਾਇ ਚਲੈ ਸੋ ਚੋਰੁ ॥੩॥
naam duraae chalai so chor |3|
Those who do not let the Naam become manifest within themselves, depart like thieves in the end. ||3||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਤੋਂ) ਦੂਰ ਦੂਰ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਪੰਧ ਵਿਚ) ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਤੇਰਾ ਚੋਰ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ਬਿਖੁ ਅੰਚਲਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
pat khoee bikh anchal paae |
The mortal loses his honor, gathering sin and corruption.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਹੀ ਪੱਲੇ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਚ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੋ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
saach naam rato pat siau ghar jaae |
But imbued with the Lord's Name, you shall go to your true home with honor.
ਪਰ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦੇਸ ਵਿਚ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਨੑਸਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰਜਾਇ ॥
jo kichh keenas prabh rajaae |
God does whatever He wills.
(ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਯਕੀਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦਾ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਦਖ਼ਲ ਨਹੀਂ),
ਭੈ ਮਾਨੈ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇ ॥੪॥
bhai maanai nirbhau meree maae |4|
One who abides in the Fear of God, becomes fearless, O my mother. ||4||
ਤੇ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਗਿੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਇਸ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਆਦਿਕ ਵਲੋਂ) ਬੇ-ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਕਾਮਨਿ ਚਾਹੈ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਭੋਗੁ ॥
kaaman chaahai sundar bhog |
The woman desires beauty and pleasure.
ਸੁੰਦਰ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਭੋਗ ਲੋੜਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਪਾਨ ਫੂਲ ਮੀਠੇ ਰਸ ਰੋਗ ॥
paan fool meetthe ras rog |
But betel leaves, garlands of flowers and sweet tastes lead only to disease.
ਪਰ ਇਹ ਪਾਨ ਫੁੱਲ ਮਿੱਠੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ-ਇਹ ਸਭ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਰੋਗ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਖੀਲੈ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਤੇਤੋ ਸੋਗ ॥

The more she plays and enjoys, the more she suffers in sorrow.
ਜਿਤਨਾ ਹੀ ਵਧੀਕ ਉਹ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਭੋਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਖਿੱਲੀਆਂ ਮਾਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਤਨਾ ਹੀ ਵਧੀਕ ਦੁੱਖ-ਰੋਗ ਵਿਆਪਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਣਾਗਤਿ ਕੀਨੑਸਿ ਹੋਗ ॥੫॥
prabh saranaagat keenas hog |5|
But when she enters into the Sanctuary of God, whatever she wishes comes to pass. ||5||
ਪਰ ਜੇਹੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਕਾਪੜੁ ਪਹਿਰਸਿ ਅਧਿਕੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥
kaaparr pahiras adhik seegaar |
She wears beautiful clothes with all sorts of decorations.
ਜੇਹੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਕੱਪੜਾ ਪਹਿਨਦੀ ਹੈ ਵਧੀਕ ਵਧੀਕ ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਮਾਟੀ ਫੂਲੀ ਰੂਪੁ ਬਿਕਾਰੁ ॥
maattee foolee roop bikaar |
But the flowers turn to dust, and her beauty leads her into evil.
ਆਪਣੀ ਕਾਂਇਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਫੁੱਲ ਫੁੱਲ ਬਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਵਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਬਾਂਧੋ ਬਾਰੁ ॥
aasaa manasaa baandho baar |
Hope and desire have blocked the doorway.
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਤੇ ਖ਼ਾਹਸ਼ਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ (ਦਸਵੇਂ) ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ੇ ਨੂੰ ਬੰਦ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ,
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਸੂਨਾ ਘਰੁ ਬਾਰੁ ॥੬॥
naam binaa soonaa ghar baar |6|
Without the Naam, one's hearth and home are deserted. ||6||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ-ਘਰ ਸੁੰਞਾ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਗਾਛਹੁ ਪੁਤ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਜ ਕੁਆਰਿ ॥

ਹੇ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਉੱਠ ਉੱਦਮ ਕਰ, ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਰਾਜੇ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਅੰਸ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਰਾਜ-ਪੁਤ੍ਰੀ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਰਾਜ-ਕੁਮਾਰੀ ਹੈਂ,
ਨਾਮੁ ਭਣਹੁ ਸਚੁ ਦੋਤੁ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥

Chant the True Name, and embellish your days.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਨਿਤ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ।
ਪ੍ਰਿਉ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਅਧਾਰਿ ॥

Serve your Beloved Lord God, and lean on the Support of His Love.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰ,
ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਬਿਖੁ ਤਿਆਸ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ॥੭॥

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, abandon your thirst for corruption and poison. ||7||
ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਇਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਤੇਰੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਦੇਵੇਗੀ ॥੭॥
ਮੋਹਨਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਲੀਆ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਿ ॥

My Fascinating Lord has fascinated my mind.
ਤੈਂ ਮੋਹਨ ਨੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਕੌਤਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਮੋਹ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਨਾ ਤੋਹਿ ॥
gur kai sabad pachhaanaa tohi |
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, I have realized You, Lord.
(ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਤਾ ਕਿ) ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਸਕਾਂ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਠਾਢੇ ਚਾਹਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੁਆਰਿ ॥

Nanak stands longingly at God's Door.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ- ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਖਲੋਤੇ (ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ),
ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੮॥੧॥

The mind is deluded by doubt it comes and goes in reincarnation.
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਹੀ) ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅਤਿ ਲੁਬਧ ਲੁਭਾਨਉ ਬਿਖਮ ਮਾਇ ॥
at lubadh lubhaanau bikham maae |
It is lured by the poisonous lure of Maya.
ਬੜਾ ਲਾਲਚੀ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਨਿਕਲਣਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਔਖਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਹ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਦੀਸੈ ਏਕ ਭਾਇ ॥

It does not remain stable in the Love of the One Lord.
(ਜਿਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦ ਤਕ) ਇਹ ਕਦੇ ਟਿਕਵੀਂ ਹਾਲਤ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ, ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ (ਮਗਨ) ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ।
ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨ ਕੁੰਡਲੀਆ ਕੰਠਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥

Like the fish, its neck is pierced by the hook. ||1||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਮੱਛੀ (ਭਿੱਤੀ ਦੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ) ਆਪਣੇ ਗਲ ਕੁੰਡੀ ਪਵਾ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਤਿਵੇਂ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਫਸਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ॥੧॥
ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲਉ ਸਮਝਸਿ ਸਾਚ ਨਾਇ ॥

The deluded mind is instructed by the True Name.
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਹੀ) ਆਪਣੀ ਭੁੱਲ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।
